Reticulocytes in untreated obstructive sleep apnoea.
2008
Background and Aim. The short, repetitive hypoxaemic episodes observed in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) may determine small augmentations in mature red blood cells. It is unknown whether they affect reticulocyte release. This study explored whether the number and degree of maturation of circulating reticulocytes may be altered in OSA, possibly through the effect of erythropoietin. Methods. Fifty male adult patients with suspected OSA, normoxic during wakefulness, were studied. After nocturnal polysomnography, a blood sample was withdrawn for blood cells count, erythropoietin, iron and transferrin determination. Reticulocyte concentration and degree of immaturity [high (H), medium (M), or l…
Investigation and management of residual sleepiness in CPAP-treated patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: the European view
2022
International audience; Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a major symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), defined as the inability to stay awake during the day. Its clinical descriptors remain elusive, and the pathogenesis is complex, with disorders such as insufficient sleep and depression commonly associated. Subjective EDS can be evaluated using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, in which the patient reports the probability of dozing in certain situations; however, its reliability has been challenged. Objective tests such as the multiple sleep latency test or the maintenance of wakefulness test are not commonly used in patients with OSA, since they require nocturnal polysomnography, da…
Geoethics and dimensions of vulnerability in Central Africa: the case study of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
2021
<p>This article aims to analyse the dimensions of vulnerability in the complex territorial ecosystem of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, considering some substantial geoethical considerations and guidelines, usefull for the resolution of crisis situation. A thematic analysis was carried out on a gathering of secondary data and testimonies. Specifically, the paper will examine the modalities by which the mitigation process of the various vulnerabilities can be realized if implemented in synergy with some geoethical key points. This could contribute to the disaster risk reduction in DRC. Therefore, this paper will ascertain how the promotion of an environmental and…
Social-ecological trends: managing the vulnerability of coastal fishing communities
2019
The loss of biodiversity, including the collapse of fish stocks, affects the vulnerability of social-ecological systems (SESs) and threatens local livelihoods. Incorporating community-centered indicators and SES drivers and exposures of change into coastal management can help anticipate and mitigate human and/or coastal vulnerability. We have proposed a new index to measure the social-ecological vulnerability of coastal fishing communities (Index of Coastal Vulnerability [ICV]) based on species, ecosystem, and social indicators. The ICV varies from 0 (no vulnerability) to 1 (very high vulnerability) and is composed of 3 components: species vulnerability, i.e., fish biological traits; ecosys…
Terapia Cognitiva Basada en Mindfullness en Pacientes Oncológicos Españoles: el Protocolo Bartley
2020
Objectives: The aim of this study is to analyse whether MBCT will reduce the general level of psychopathology, increase the quality of life, and increase meta-knowledge about their emotional state in Spanish participants with cancer. Method: The sample consisted of n = 88 Spanish oncology patients. This was a non-randomized, two-group (experimental vs waiting list) trial conducted in a naturalistic setting. We evaluated psychological distress (BSI-18), quality of life (FACT-G), and meta-knowledge of emotions (TMMS-24). Results: The participants who received the MBCT treatment improved more than the control group in distress (F= 6.79; p = .01, BSI-18), depression (F= 8.38; p = .005 ), qualit…
Erfaringer ved mindfulness som helsefremmende metode : en kvalitativ studie om kursdeltakeres erfaringer etter mindfulness retreat i Kenya
2016
Masteroppgave klinisk helsevitenskap ME520 - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Background The reason for the study was to look into mindfulness as health promotion method through Norwegian participants' experiences after mindfulness retreat in Kenya. The problem I am asking is; "What experiences have Norwegian participants after mindfulness retreat in Kenya –light of health promotion and quality of life?" Method: design, selection and analysis I have used qualitative research methods. Data were collected in the form of participant observati…
Mindfulness, rumination, and coping skills in young women with Eating Disorders: A comparative study with healthy controls
2019
Eating Disorders (ED) have been associated with dysfunctional coping strategies, such as rumination. Promoting alternative ways of experiencing mental events, based on a mindfulness approach, might be the clue for learning more effective coping and regulatory strategies among young women with ED. This study examined the comparison between patients with ED diagnosis and healthy subjects in mindfulness, rumination and effective coping. In addition, we analyzed the independent association of those with the presence of ED. The study sample was formed by two groups of young women ranged 13-21 years: Twenty-five with an ED diagnosis and 25 healthy subjects. They were assessed by using the Freibur…
Psychological inflexibility explains distress in parents whose children have chronic conditions
2018
Experiential avoidance, cognitive defusion, and mindfulness have all been associated with psychological disorders and well-being. This study investigates whether they predict psychological distress, i.e., symptoms of burnout, depression, stress and anxiety, in parents of children with chronic conditions. We hypothesized that these factors would exhibit a large degree of common variance, and that when compared to mindfulness and defusion, experiential avoidance on its own would predict a larger proportion of unique variance. 75 parents of children with chronic conditions having burnout symptoms who participated in an intervention study completed measures of burnout, stress, anxiety, depressi…
THE VULNERABILITY OF ARCHITECTURE: PALERMO 6 SEPTEMBER 2002
2009
The study is part of the research entitled: "Interaction of seismic risk and built abusive. Typological and morphological characters in hazardous seismic" conducted by the University of Palermo in order to determine methods and means of prevention and recovery in areas abusive environments of the Mediterranean. 1. The vulnerability of refugees: Some reflections on definitions and measurement practices
2021
The legal and policy discourse on refugees has been mainly focusing on the labelling of particularly vulnerable persons or groups, while it has neglected to offer reflections on the effects of definitions and assessment practices over the creation of stereotypes and of biases in the identification of beneficiaries of protection. The aim of this paper was to offer some reflections on the how categories of vulnerability defined by international and supranational law are operationalised and implemented in the practice of the vulnerability assessment inside the humanitarian organisations. Our analysis shows that the vagueness of the legal definitions affects the way in which humanitarian organi…
