Città, diritti e pratiche di mutualismo: riflessioni a partire dalle istanze comunitarie ai tempi della pandemia
2022
During the pandemic crisis, the “community” practices of mutualism have characterized the urban space by operating in a subsidiary, if not a substitute, manner with respect to public institutions. Their actions have been political in the sense in which Hannah Arendt defined this concept. Starting from a reflection on vulnerabilities, taking a case study as the object, and dialoguing with Orsetta Giolo’s essay, The rights against the city. Urban space, subjectivity and the public sphere, published in 2021, the potential and limits of these practices will be analyzed, along with their relationship with established power, with respect to the renewed tension between rights and territoriality, w…
A Just Criminalization of Irregular Immigration: Is It Possible?
2015
The aim of this paper is to question, from the perspective of a principled theory of criminalization, the legitimacy of making irregular immigration (IM) a crime. In order to do this, I identify three main ways in which the political decision to introduce a crime of IM may be defended: according to the first, IM is a malum in se the wrongness of which resides in its being a violation of states’ territorial sovereignty; according to the second, IM is a justified malum prohibitum the wrongness of which resides in its being a violation of a justified immigration regulation; according to the third, IM is a malum in se the wrongness of which resides in its harmful consequences for receiving stat…
Looking for the "Vulnerable Subject": The Mencian Account of the Person
2019
The idea of the legal subject as an autonomous agent, with the capacity to choose and freely determine herself without external constraints or interference, complete in herself and independent, has had remarkable normative implications in structuring contemporary legal systems. The philosopher Martha Fineman recently argued against this notion, proposing the alternative one of “vulnerable subject.” This paper suggests that the notion of the person elaborated by the classical Confucian thinkers encompasses the “vulnerable subject.” The Confucian theorizations resonate with the ethic of care; however, their moral and normative relevance carries the potential for a broader scope of application…
La tutela della vulnerabilità in ambito giuridico. Rilevanza del concetto nel contesto della tratta e del traffico di persone migranti
2022
The legal system started to use the word “vulnerability” to provide protection in cases of abuse or need. Understanding the double face of vulnerability, as both universal and individual, may lead us to overcome the traditional liberal paradigm and its idea of indi-viduals independent and autonomous, and finally embrace an idea of legal subject based on his inherent vulnerability. The differences between these paradigms are evident in the fields of migration and human trafficking. This paper proposes to rethink the approach to migration starting from vulnerability.
The effect of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control: A systematic review.
2022
Background: Postural control (PC) can be affected by circadian rhythm and sleep deprivation, whereby it has been reported the result of PC measurement in clinical and experimental situations can be influenced by both factors. It has been suggested sleepiness can result in deficiency in PC, which in turn can lead to occupational accidents and subsequent injuries. This is while no study critically reviews or summarizes findings surrounding this topic in the literature. Research question: Is there any significant effect of sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm on PC variables among healthy individuals? Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase were used to detect relevant studies. O…
Ripensare la "persona" oggi
2018
The text presents a critical question on the concept of “person” starting from the current political situation characterized from a wave of migration that tests the democratic resources of the West and that seems to impose the renunciation of the classic ideal of "good life". Making use of the reflection of Judith Butler, who thinks human being from vulnerability, exposure and dependence, the author proposes a rethinking of the "person" who claims to come from a sort of deconstruction of the "sublime" that presents itself in the moral sphere, in particular in the Critique of the practical reason of Kant, in the form of a doubling of the idea of "life" (animal life and moral life) and of "an…
Vulnerabilità e cura nell'etica di Judith Butler
2020
In the contemporary debate on social conflicts, studies of political philosophy and moral philosophy often follow paths and reflections that intersect with the intent of developing a theory of recognition. For the wide interest that has emerged on this subject, it is proposed to reread the works of Judith Butler's most recent production, starting from Giving an Account of Oneself, translated into Italian with the title of Critica della violenza etica. In Butler's philosophical speculation, in dialogue with Levinas, Adorno, Arendt and Cavarero, the reflection on good life and the human condition characterized by vulnerability and precariousness of existence is re-articulated in order to elab…
Disaster Resilience and Human Settlements in the Anthropocene
2023
The chapter sets the context starting from the emerging perspectives on disaster resilience and human settlements in the larger context of the proposed new geological era of Anthropocene. It explores the impact of disasters on the human settlements, giving examples and illustrating the theoretical reference framework regarding the birth of the idea of the Anthropocene. The chapter focuses on the interdisci-plinary nature of the ‘disaster resilience and human settlements’ theme in relation to the various global development agendas, including the Expanded Brown Agenda, the Hyogo Framework of Action, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,…
Integrated Geographies of Risk, Natural Hazards and Sustainability
2022
This Special Issue aims to present both theoretical contributions and case studies. We invite papers that discuss holistic approaches that integrate methods of human, cultural, and physical geography to explore concepts of risk and sustainability in the context of the complex relationship between disasters and the vagaries of the human condition.
Cognitive vulnerability to depressive symptoms in children: the protective role of self-efficacy beliefs in a multi-wave longitudinal study.
2014
The current multi-wave longitudinal study on childhood examined the role that social and academic self-efficacy beliefs and cognitive vulnerabilities play in predicting depressive symptoms in response to elevations in idiographic stressors. Children (N = 554; males: 51.4 %) attending second and third grade completed measures of depressive symptoms, negative cognitive styles, negative life events, and academic and social self-efficacy beliefs at four time-points over 6 months. Results showed that high levels of academic and social self-efficacy beliefs predicted lower levels of depressive symptoms, whereas negative cognitive styles about consequences predicted higher depression. Furthermore,…
