Computer-Assisted Approaches for Uterine Fibroid Segmentation in MRgFUS Treatments: Quantitative Evaluation and Clinical Feasibility Analysis

2019

Nowadays, uterine fibroids can be treated using Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS), which is a non-invasive therapy exploiting thermal ablation. In order to measure the Non-Perfused Volume (NPV) for treatment response assessment, the ablated fibroid areas (i.e., Region of Treatment, ROT) are manually contoured by a radiologist. The current operator-dependent methodology could affect the subsequent follow-up phases, due to the lack of result repeatability. In addition, this fully manual procedure is time-consuming, considerably increasing execution times. These critical issues can be addressed only by means of accurate and efficient automated Pattern Recognition ap…

Monitoring of fracture calluses with color Doppler sonography.

1999

Purpose Fracture callus formation is closely associated with vascular invasion, and the use of color Doppler sonography has been suggested as a means to monitor, earlier than gray-scale sonography, the first stages of the healing process. We report the findings in a series of patients with tibial fractures in whom both gray-scale sonography and color Doppler imaging were employed to monitor new bone formation at the fracture site. Methods Twenty patients with tibial fractures treated with external fixator frames were examined sonographically about 10 days after surgery and then about every 25 days until radiographic demonstration of consolidation. Results Eighteen of 20 patients had a well-…

Technical Feasibility of Electromagnetic US/CT Fusion Imaging and Virtual Navigation in the Guidance of Spine Biopsies.

2020

To test the technical feasibility of electromagnetic computed tomography (CT) + ultrasound fusion (US)-guided bone biopsy of spinal lesions. This retrospective study included 14 patients referred for biopsy of spinal bone lesions without cortical disruption or intervertebral disc infection. Lesions were located in the sacrum (n = 4), lumbar vertebral body (n = 7) or intervertebral disc (n = 3). Fusion technology matched a pre-procedure CT scan with real-time ultrasound. The first six procedures were performed under both standard CT and CT + US fusion guidance (group 1). In the last eight procedures, the needle was positioned under fusion imaging guidance alone, and CT was only used at the …

Diagnostic Performance of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Fusion Targeted Biopsy to Detect Significant Prostate Cancer

2017

Background/aim Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging combined with ultrasound-fusion-targeted biopsy of the prostate intends to increase diagnostic precision, which has to be clarified. Patients and methods We performed multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging followed by ultrasound-fusion-guided perineal biopsy in 99 male patients with elevated prostate-specific-antigen and previous negative standard biopsy-procedures. Results In 33/99 patients (33%) no malignancy could be confirmed by histopathology. Low-grade carcinomas (Gleason-Score 6+7a) were found in 42/66 (64%) and high-grade carcinomas (Gleason-Score ≥7b) in 24/66 (36%) men. A high-grade carcinoma corresponded to PI-RADS 4 o…

Comparison of Elastic and Rigid Registration during Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Ultrasound Fusion-Guided Prostate Biopsy: A Multi-Operator Phantom Stu…

2018

The relative value of rigid or elastic registration during magnetic resonance imaging/ultrasound fusion guided prostate biopsy has been poorly studied. We compared registration errors (the distance between a region of interest and fiducial markers) between rigid and elastic registration during fusion guided prostate biopsy using a prostate phantom model.Four gold fiducial markers visible on magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound were placed throughout 1 phantom prostate model. The phantom underwent magnetic resonance imaging and the fiducial markers were labeled as regions of interest. An experienced user and a novice user of fusion guided prostate biopsy targeted regions of interest and…

SIUMB recommendations for focal pancreatic lesions

2020

AbstractContrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is increasingly being performed in Italy and Europe, particularly in the field of hepato-gastroenterology. Initially, it was mainly carried out to characterize focal hepatic lesions, but, since then, numerous studies have demonstrated its efficacy in the differential diagnosis of focal pancreatic pathologies (D’Onofrio et al. in Expert Rev Med Devices 7(2):257–273, 2010; Vidili et al. in J Ultrasound 22(1):41–51, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to provide Italian Medical Doctors with recommendations and thereby practical guidelines on the management of these patients. The present paper reports the final conclusions reached by the SIUMB gu…

Using ultrasound transmission velocity to analyse the mechanical properties of teeth after in vitro, in situ, and in vivo irradiation.

2000

Ultrasound transmission velocity (UTV) in isotropic material as a measure for the modulus of elasticity was correlated to mechanical properties. Changes in micromechanical properties of radiated teeth and influence of the oral cavity were to be evaluated nondestructively. UTV was measured in extracted teeth after 36 Gy and 62 Gy of in situ (enorally, with no contact to the oral cavity) and in vitro irradiation. Relative to controls, teeth subjected to 62 Gy in vivo showed higher UTV values for dentine and enamel. Sound teeth irradiated with 60 Gy in situ also showed higher UTV values for enamel, whereas dentine values were not significantly different from those of control. The mechanical pr…

Effect of the relative optical air mass and the clearness index on solar erythemal UV irradiance

2014

This paper analyses the effects of the clearness index (Kt) and the relative optical air mass (mr) on erythemal UV irradiance (UVER). The UVER measurements were made in Valencia (Spain) from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm between June 2003 and December 2012 and (140,000 data points). Firstly, two models were used to calculate values for the erythemal ultraviolet irradiance clearness index (KtUVER) as a function of the global irradiance clearness index (Kt). Secondly, a potential regression model to measure the KtUVER as a function of the relative optical air mass was studied. The coefficients of this regression were evaluated for clear and cloudy days, as well as for days with high and low ozone levels…

A comprehensive use of ultrasound examination in infertility workup

2021

Considering the growing availability of ultrasound diagnostic methods in gynecology, its role in the infertility setting is increasing. In this review, we present an up-to-date ultrasound based diagnostic scheme in infertility workup comprising the evaluation of ovarian anatomy and function, uterine exploration, as well as tubal patency. The possibility of performing the vast majority of infertility diagnostics by ultrasound in the ambulatory settings is not only attractive and beneficial to patients, but also to health care system. Thus, it is vital for gynecologists to implement modern non-invasive ultrasound modalities in their everyday practice.

Conservative treatment of ectopic pregnancies using a single echo-guided injection of methotrexate into the gestational sac

1991

The authors describe the possibility of the conservative treatment of five early ectopic pregnancies. A single injection of methotrexate into the tubal gestational sac was performed under vaginal ultrasound guidance. In all five cases, a clear ectopic gestational sac could be visualized. The pregnancies dated from the 5th to the 7th week of amenorrhea. Strict ultrasound follow-up following injection showed a gradual reduction in the size of the tubal gestational sac. At the same time, plasma beta-hCG gradually decreased to zero after a maximum time period of 25 days. Subsequent hysterosalpingography performed on all of the women demonstrated bilateral normal patent tubes. It is concluded th…
