Architectures and protocols for mobile computing applications: a reconfigurable approach
2004
This work deals with reconfigurable control functions and protocols for supporting mobile computing applications in heterogeneous wireless systems like cellular networks and WLANs. The control functions are implemented in a software module, named Reconfigurable Access module for MObile computiNg applications (RAMON), placed in mobile and/or base stations. RAMON operates on abstract models of the main communication functions of a wireless systems (e.g., transmission over the radio channel, coding end error recovery, capacity sharing and packet scheduling, handover, congestion control, etc.). RAMON algorithms are programmed with reference to the abstract models, independently of specific radi…
Uplink DPCCH Gating of Inactive UEs in Continuous Packet Connectivity Mode for HSUPA
2007
In order to further improve the packet performance in the UMTS FDD system, uplink dedicated physical control channel (DPCCH) gating as a scheme is proposed in 3GPP under the work item "continuous connectivity for packet data users". In this paper, the uplink DPCCH gating concept is described and analyzed on both a qualitative and a quantitative level. And the system performance of different gating patterns used in the scheme was investigated by analytical prediction and system level simulations with different channel profiles. As shown, the selection of the gating pattern has a significant influence on the system performance, which is correlated with the uplink data transmission activity an…
UMTS radio networks
2006
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the contributions to the UMTS radio network planning, with the optimization being provided from COST 273 and the real-time tuning, which is related to RRM. The results on UTRAN performance evaluation by the means of simulation tools are also discussed. The UMTS planning includes processes like: the propagation and traffic models, the aspects of parameter planning, and the automatic planning algorithms. An accurate ray-tracing model integrated in a UMTS-capable planning tool allows the radio network planner to reach optimal numbers for the BS deployment and configuration while meeting the service level requirements. Ray tracing can identify the problem …
Temporal Dispersion Characterization of Over-Building Propagation Applied to Iso-Frequency Repeaters
2009
This letter presents the results of a measurements campaign carried out at 2050 MHz with the aim of characterizing the time dispersion of multipath propagation when the transmit and receive antennas are placed near and situated on rooftops or mounted on masts. The measurements were taken in four separate locations within the urban area of Madrid, Spain. From the measured data, the root mean square (RMS) value of the delay spread and the delay interval that characterize the time dispersion propagation of the environment under study are analyzed. An average power delay profile (PDP), representative of the time dispersion, is proposed so as to extrapolate these results to other similar environ…
A “Best Current Practice” for 3GPP-based cellular system security
2014
This paper is an attempt at formulating a Best Current Practice (BCP) for access security and a baseline for core network security in the 3GPP-based systems. This encompasses the 2G circuit-switched GSM system, the 2.5G packet-switched GPRS system, the 3G UMTS system and the 4G LTE/LTE-A system. The 3GPP have defined several security standards, but many measures are optional and there are several areas deliberately not covered by the 3GPP standards. The present document is therefore an attempt at pointing out the best available options and providing advice on how to achieve an overall system hardening, which is badly needed as the cellular systems have undoubtedly become one of the most cri…

Real-time video transmission in UMTS
2001
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2001 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Universal Mobile Telecommunication System is denoted as a 3rd cellular system and has been designed with the objective to be a system with global coverage. With the major improvement of in bandwidth capability the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System will be able to support real time multimedia services. This thesis starts with a presentation of the possible video services that can be exploited in third generation cellular systems. Video services are known to be bandwidth consuming and have rigid requirements to the real time requirements. Though the major increase in available bandwidth in the…
New Insights Into Mitochondrial DNA Reconstruction and Variant Detection in Ancient Samples
2021
Ancient DNA (aDNA) studies are frequently focused on the analysis of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is much more abundant than the nuclear genome, hence can be better retrieved from ancient remains. However, postmortem DNA damage and contamination make the data analysis difficult because of DNA fragmentation and nucleotide alterations. In this regard, the assessment of the heteroplasmic fraction in ancient mtDNA has always been considered an unachievable goal due to the complexity in distinguishing true endogenous variants from artifacts. We implemented and applied a computational pipeline for mtDNA analysis to a dataset of 30 ancient human samples from an Iron Age necropolis in Poliz…
Radio network aspects
2006
Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the mobile radio access network reference scenarios (MORANS)—used to study the performance of the radio cellular networks related to UMTS and the methodologies for the radio network performance evaluation, including the theoretical connectivity models,. It discusses the techniques for radio network optimization such as the packet scheduling for cellular systems or system capacity maximization through the use of multiple antennas. . In order to perform system simulations, reference values for the main parameters characterizing a WCDMA network, are required. MORANS is used for the identification of such parameters. The parameters are classified in two gr…
A Delay-Centric Dynamic Resource Allocation Algorithm for Wireless Communication Systems Based on HNN
2008
This paper proposes a dynamic resource-allocation (DRA) algorithm for packet data services in wireless communication systems based on Hopfleld neural networks (HNNs). The resource-allocation algorithm assumes a delay-centric approach in that it maximizes resource utilization of the overall system while minimizing the packet delay. The real-time (RT) working capability of HNN hardware implementation means that a very powerful scheduling DRA algorithm can be obtained. A generic formulation of the algorithm is presented to establish the optimal bit rate allocation. In addition, some illustrative examples of this formulation are given, considering specific wireless communication systems, such a…
