A European Study of the Performance and Safety of MINIject in Patients With Medically Uncontrolled Open-angle Glaucoma (STAR-II)

2020

Precis In this European study (STAR-II), MINIject, a novel, ab-interno, supraciliary MIGS device, effectively lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) and the need for IOP-lowering medications in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Purpose To evaluate the safety and performance of a minimally invasive supraciliary glaucoma drainage device (MINIject DO627, iSTAR Medical SA, Wavre, Belgium) for surgical treatment of primary open angle glaucoma in patients refractory to topical hypotensive medications. Methods In a prospective, interventional, single-arm, multi-center, European study (STAR-II), MINIject was successfully implanted in a standalone procedure in 29 of 31 patients in 8 sites in 3 …

Ulipristal acetate versus leuprolide acetate for uterine fibroids

2012

A b s t r ac t Background The efficacy and side-effect profile of ulipristal acetate as compared with those of leuprolide acetate for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids before surgery are unclear. Methods In this double-blind noninferiority trial, we randomly assigned 307 patients with symptomatic fibroids and excessive uterine bleeding to receive 3 months of daily therapy with oral ulipristal acetate (at a dose of either 5 mg or 10 mg) or once-monthly intramuscular injections of leuprolide acetate (at a dose of 3.75 mg). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with controlled bleeding at week 13, with a prespecified noninferiority margin of −20%. Results Uterine bleed…

Antral follicle count (AFC) can be used in the prediction of ovarian response but cannot predict the oocyte/embryo quality or the in vitro fertilizat…

2007

To verify whether the antral follicle count (AFC) could predict ovarian response, oocyte/embryo quality, and IVF outcome.Prospective study.Instituto Universitario-Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. One thousand seventy-four donors and 975 oocyte recipient cycles.Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH), endometrial preparation, IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ET.COH and oocyte/embryo quality parameters and IVF outcome. We observed lower E(2) levels and fewer mature retrieved oocyte numbers among donors who showed an AFC that was10. These donors also showed significantly higher cancellation and no-donation rates; poor and/or insufficient response was the principal ca…

Laparoscopic aortic lymphadenectomy in left-sided inferior vena cava

2020

Transposition of the inferior vena cava (IVC), also known as left-sided IVC (LS-IVC), is a rare congenital variant which results from regression of the right supracardinal vein and persistence of the left supracardinal vein in embryonic development.[1 2][1] LS-IVC occurs in 0.2–0.5% of the general

Electrocardiographic Diagnosis of Atrial Tachycardia: Classification, P-Wave Morphology, and Differential Diagnosis with Other Supraventricular Tachy…

2015

Atrial tachycardia is defined as a regular atrial activation from atrial areas with centrifugal spread, caused by enhanced automaticity, triggered activity or microreentry. New ECG classification differentiates between focal and macroreentrant atrial tachycardia. Macroreentrant atrial tachycardias include typical atrial flutter and other well characterized macroreentrant circuits in right and left atrium. Typical atrial flutter has been described as counterclockwise reentry within right atrial and it presents a characteristic ECG “sawtooth” pattern on the inferior leads. The foci responsible for focal atrial tachycardia do not occur randomly throughout the atria but tend to cluster at chara…

Formation of supramolecular aggregates by hydrogen bonding based on bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid

1997

Hydrogen bonds between bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid in equal molar ratio can lead to the formation of supramolecular aggregates. This is established by TEM, IR and DSC measurements. Additionally, WAXS pattern showed that the aggregate is of laminar structure. Both the hydrolysis of this system and termination of the aggregate's growth were studied.

Inflammation and oxidative stress in vertebrate host–parasite systems

2008

Innate, inflammation-based immunity is the first line of vertebrate defence against micro-organisms. Inflammation relies on a number of cellular and molecular effectors that can strike invading pathogens very shortly after the encounter between inflammatory cells and the intruder, but in a non-specific way. Owing to this non-specific response, inflammation can generate substantial costs for the host if the inflammatory response, and the associated oxygen-based damage, get out of control. This imposes strong selection pressure that acts to optimize two key features of the inflammatory response: the timing of activation and resolution (the process of downregulation of the response). In this p…
