In t…

Fasciola hepatica phenotypic characterization in Andean human endemic areas: Valley versus altiplanic patterns analysed in liver flukes from sheep fr…

2011

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. Of both species, F. hepatica is the only one described in the Americas, mainly transmitted by lymnaeid snail vectors of the Galba/. Fossaria group. Human fascioliasis endemic areas are mainly located in high altitude areas of Andean countries. Given the necessity to characterize F. hepatica populations involved, the phenotypic features of fasciolid adults infecting sheep present in human fascioliasis endemic areas were analysed in the Cajamarca Valley and Mantaro Valley (valley transmission patterns) and the northern Bolivian Altiplano (altiplanic transmission pattern). A computer image analysis…

Manipulating the alpha level cannot cure significance testing

2018

We argue that making accept/reject decisions on scientific hypotheses, including a recent call for changing the canonical alpha level from p = 0.05 to p = 0.005, is deleterious for the finding of new discoveries and the progress of science. Given that blanket and variable alpha levels both are problematic, it is sensible to dispense with significance testing altogether. There are alternatives that address study design and sample size much more directly than significance testing does; but none of the statistical tools should be taken as the new magic method giving clear-cut mechanical answers. Inference should not be based on single studies at all, but on cumulative evidence from multiple in…

Parents or Peers? Predictors of Prosocial Behavior and Aggression: A Longitudinal Study

2019

The aim of this longitudinal study was to determine the associations among peer attachment, warmth from the mother and father, strict control by the mother and father, prosocial behavior, and physical and verbal aggression in adolescence. Few longitudinal studies have examined how peer attachment and parenting styles of the mother and father relate to prosocial behavior and aggression. Participants were 192 boys and 255 girls (M = 14.70 years; SD = 0.68) in wave 1. In the study participated 11 schools. For three successive years, participants reported on their fathers’ and mothers’ warmth and strict control, peer attachment, prosocial behavior, and aggression. Structural equations modeling …

Chemical and photochemical properties of chloroharmine derivatives in aqueous solutions

2015

Thermal and photochemical stability (ΦR), room temperature UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) and lifetimes (τF), quantum yields of hydrogen peroxide (ΦH2O2) and singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) production, and triplet lifetimes (τT) have been obtained for the neutral and protonated forms of 6-chloroharmine, 8-chloroharmine and 6,8-dichloroharmine, in aqueous media. When it was possible, the effect of pH and oxygen concentration was evaluated. The nature of electronic transitions of protonated and neutral species of the three investigated chloroharmines was established using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The impact of all the fo…

Analysis of Business Elite Networks and Revolving Doors in Mexico : Cartography of a Public-Private Ruling Class

2020

All that Glitters is not Green

2012

The painter, carrying his easel, walks leisurely across the meadow that extends up to the limits of the summer sky. Under a chestnut tree he prepares his palette and his colors, then stretches and smiles. He is wearing a cotton shirt and slacks; a straw hat covers his curly hair. He walks barefoot because he likes the feel of the grass under his feet. This painter loves nature; he loves nature as an artist and as a scientist. This painter is a nuclear physicist, and his job consists in harnessing the elementary power of the atom, the one that makes the stars glow, in order to generate the power and hydrogen his town uses.

First report of Tomato leaf curl Sinaloa virus infecting tomato crops in Panama

2015

In April 2011 and September 2012, virus-like symptoms were observed in open field- and greenhouse-grown tomato crops (Solanum lycopersicum) in Chiriquí, the westernmost province of Panama. Samples from symptom-bearing plants (127 in all) were collected and tested for the presence of begomoviruses by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays with sets of degenerated primers designed to amplify parts of the DNA-A and DNA-B components (Rojas et al., 1993; Table 1). Products of the expected sizes, obtained with both DNA-A- and DNA-B-specific primers for 49 samples, suggested infection with New World bipartite begomoviruses. This corresponds to an incidence of 26% (8 plants) in open field, and 43% …

Third family of compact stars within a nonlocal chiral quark model equation of state

2019

A class of hybrid compact star equations of state is investigated that joins by a Maxwell construction a low-density phase of hadronic matter, modeled by a relativistic mean-field approach with excluded nucleon volume, with a high-density phase of color superconducting two-flavor quark matter, described within a nonlocal covariant chiral quark model. It is found that the occurrence of a stable branch of hybrid compact stars requires a nonvanishing vector meson coupling in the quark model that exceeds a minimal value which depends on the presence of a diquark condensate. It is shown that these hybrid stars do not form a third family disconnected from the second family of ordinary neutron sta…

Nuclear and partonic dynamics in the EMC effect

2013

It has been recently confirmed that the magnitude of the EMC effect measured in the electron deep inelastic scattering is linearly related to the short-range correlation scaling factor obtained from electron inclusive scattering. By using a x-rescaling approach we are able to understand the interplay between the quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom in the discussion of the EMC effect.
