Validation of the ISTH/SSC bleeding assessment tool for inherited platelet disorders: A communication from the Platelet Physiology SSC

2020

Background: Careful assessment of bleeding history is the first step in the evaluation of patients with mild/moderate bleeding disorders, and the use of a bleeding assessment tool (BAT) is strongly encouraged. Although a few studies have assessed the utility of the ISTH-BAT in patients with inherited platelet function disorders (IPFD) none of them was sufficiently large to draw conclusions and/or included appropriate control groups. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to test the utility of the ISTH-BAT in a large cohort of patients with a well-defined diagnosis of inherited platelets disorder in comparison with two parallel cohorts, one of patients with type-1 von Willebrand disea…

Unethical Brotherly Love: Zell Kravinsky and Maximum Human Utility

2014

The case of American investor and philanthropist Zell Kravinsky (1956-) presents numerous ethical challenges regarding our social responsibility to others. In 2003, after disbursing the bulk of his forty-five-million-dollar fortune to various charities, Kravinsky made the decision to donate one of his kidneys to an impoverished African-American woman he had met only once. In doing so he courageously saved a life, but also incurred the wrath of his family, friends, and many observers in the media who questioned his sanity. To Kravinsky, however, refusal to donate would have been tantamount to murder, constituting a violation of his belief in ‘maximum human utility’ – a concept that insists o…

Distributed $n$-player approachability and consensus in coalitional games

2015

We study a distributed allocation process where, at each time, every player: i) proposes a new bid based on the average utilities produced up to that time, ii) adjusts such allocations based on the inputs received from its neighbors, and iii) generates and allocates new utilities. The average allocations evolve according to a doubly (over time and space) averaging algorithm. We study conditions under which the average allocations reach consensus to any point within a predefined target set even in the presence of adversarial disturbances. Motivations arise in the context of coalitional games with transferable utilities (TU) where the target set is any set of allocations that makes the grand …

¿Cabe hablar de una «generación de la crisis»? Discusión en torno a una noción sobreexplotada

2018

This article states that nowadays there is an overuse (or a misuse) of the «Generation» idea. The discussion among many authors over the «Generation of crisis» concept suggests that it is useful to outline the characteristics of the target of population of the collective of youth who are mainly affected by the economic and social crisis over the past years. Nevertheless, through analyzing the meanings of the «Generation of Crisis» made by Mannheim, Ortega and other classic authors, it is clear that the social class approach together with the generational one are needed to define this concrete concept. The conclusion of the articleis that both approaches are seen as underpinning their utilit…

The utility function and the emotional well-being function

2004

Behind the utility function, which is the basis for economic and finance theory, is a philosophical and ethical approach based essentially on the Utilitarian and Hedonistic schools. Once qualitative, the utility function’s approach shifted to a quantitative one based on the work of the mathematician, D. Bernoulli. This quantitative approach is normative and based on a maximizing agent. In this paper, the “emotional well-being” function is developed which mixes the ethics of a rational economic individual with those of a more complete individual who is simultaneously conditioned by economic, instinctive, social, religious, ethical, and esthetic values. This new utility function of emotional …

Health-related Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Survivors Attending an Exercise Intervention Study : A Five-year Follow-up

2020

Background/Aim: As the number of breast cancer survivors is increasing, their long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL)has become an important issue. The aim of the study is to follow up the HRQoL of breast cancer survivors (BCS) in a prospectiverandomized exercise intervention study and to compare HRQoL to that of the age-matched general female population. Patients and Methods: Following adjuvant treatment, 537 patients aged 35-68 and capable of exercise training were randomized to a 12-monthexercise trial. In 182 of those patients, HRQoL was measured by the generic 15D at baseline and followed up for five years.Furthermore, the HRQoL of all BCS answering the 15D at five-year follow…

Intellectual capital in the italian Public Service sector: analysis on management and governance

2011

Today measurement of companies economic, financial and social performance must take into account the role played by intangible assets. It is widely accepted in the literature that the latter, in the sense of resources without physical substance, are key factors in ensuring competitiveness. For this reason, more and more companies are anxious to develop effective and efficient tools to define, manage, monitor, evaluate and communicate the importance of their intangible assets. The definition and classification of intangible assets is still an open question (Zambon 2004; Marr and Neely 2004). We sometimes speak of intangible assets, and at other times intellectual capital. Recognition of the …

A strategic approach for the discounted Shapley values

2014

The family of discounted Shapley values is analyzed for cooperative games in coalitional form. We consider the bargaining protocol of the alternating random proposer introduced in Hart and Mas-Colell (Econometrica 64:357–380, 1996). We demonstrate that the discounted Shapley values arise as the expected payoffs associated with the bargaining equilibria when a time discount factor is considered. In a second model, we replace the time cost with the probability that the game ends without agreements. This model also implements these values in transferable utility games, moreover, the model implements the \(\alpha \)-consistent values in the nontransferable utility setting.
