Decentralization in Ukraine and Bottom-Up European Integration
2020
Decentralization is one of the most profound reforms undertaken in Ukraine. It includes the voluntary merging of previously independent villages and towns into larger Amalgamated Territorial Communities (ATCs). The European Union strongly supports the reform but does not make Ukraine’s further European integration conditional upon it. In order to study whether decentralization can, nevertheless, contribute to the country’s European integration, this chapter adopts a sociological perspective. It asks whether decentralization has led to an increase in community twinning and participation of Ukrainian communities in transnational municipal networks. It is based on a survey conducted among the …

This paper analyzes the use of the preposition u and na in locative constructions with the term Ukraine in the language of Rusyns from Bačka and Syrmia in the 20-30s of the XX century. The following periodicals were taken into consideration: the newspaper “Ruski Novini” of the Rusyns Society for Education and the newspaper “Zarja” and “Kalendar - Zarja” of the Cultural and Educational Union of the Rusyns of Yugoslavia. The use of both prepositions before the specified term is attested, and that is in line with the Ukrainian linguistic tradition. The use of these prepositions in locative constructions with terms Podkarpatska Rus, Karpatska Ukrajina and Hornitsa is also considered.

La colonizzazione del Sud-est ucraino: una questione etnica ucraino-russa nella lettura di Dmytro Bahalij
2022
The Ukrainian-Russian ethnic question in Southeastern Ukraine has gained critical importance during the war unleashed by Moscow against Ukraine in February 2022; in this paper I analyze the question of the Ukrainian-Cossack and Muscovy colonization of this very region. I focus on the work by the Ukrainian scholar Dmytro Bahalij (1857-1932), a former member of the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences. Bahalij emphasizes the key difference between the Ukrainian-Cossack popular colonization of the steppe region and the Moscow administration of these territories. The paper examines some of the main writings by Bahalij and reviews critical articles about his works.

To this end, it investigates the different framing strategies used to represent wartime memories in Wikipedia, the ways these strategies are developed by local editors’ communities, and the reception of Wikipedia’s representations of the past by national and transnational audiences. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the different forms of consensus used in…

Abstract The most significant process of the modern civilization advancement is globalization. The crucial tendencies of the world educational system development aim at strengthening the main role of knowledge as a component of employee workshop, often much more precious than the material part, originating from the employer. In 1991, due to globalization processes, Ukraine abandoned the Soviet higher education model, following the international scenario of the higher education development. In the last few years some propositions for reforms of the above system have appeared. The Draft Law on Higher Education approved in December 2012 has made the situation less clear.
