Pullulan and dextran: uncommon composition dependent Flory-Huggins interaction parameters of their aqueous solutions.

2008

Vapor pressure measurements were performed for aqueous solutions of pullulan ( M w 280 kg/mol) and dextran ( M w 60 and 2100 kg/mol, respectively) at 25, 37.5, and 50 degrees C. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters obtained from these measurements, plus information on dilute solutions taken from the literature, show that water is a better solvent for pullulan than for dextran. Furthermore, they evince uncommon composition dependencies, including the concurrent appearance of two extrema, a minimum at moderate polymer concentration and a maximum at high polymer concentration. To model these findings, a previously established approach, subdividing the mixing process into two clearly separa…

Enhanced styrene removal in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter: Towards full-scale applications

2017

Abstract Styrene vapor abatement was investigated in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter (TPPB-BTF). The removal performance of the TPPB-BTF was simultaneously compared with a conventional BTF, which served as a control. Industrial-grade silicone oil was used as the non-aqueous phase in the TPPB-BTF due to its high affinity for styrene. Both bioreactors were operated at styrene inlet concentrations ranging from 55 to 323 mg C m −3 and empty bed residence times (EBRT) of 15–30 s, corresponding to pollutant loading rates of 13–77 g C m −3  h −1 . Both bioreactors exhibited styrene removal efficiencies (REs) higher than 90% at an EBRT of 30 s. Nevertheless, th…

Large scale fractionation of pullulan and dextran

2006

Abstract A recently developed large scale fractionation technique named continuous spin fractionation (CSF) was applied to fractionate pullulan and dextran. 450 g of pullulan with a broad molecular weight distribution were fractionated using water as solvent and acetone as precipitant. In this study, we have in five CSF runs prepared three fractions with apparent M ¯ w * values ranging from 17.6 to 413 kg mol−1. Seventy grams of dextran were fractionated with a mixed solvent of water plus methanol. Five fractionation steps resulted in four samples with M ¯ w values between 4.36 and 18.2 kg mol−1.

Insights into the annotated genome sequence of Methanoculleus bourgensis MS2(T), related to dominant methanogens in biogas-producing plants

2014

The final step of the biogas production process, the methanogenesis, is frequently dominated by members of the genus Methanoculleus. In particular, the species Methanoculleus bourgensis was identified to play a role in different biogas reactor systems. The genome of the type strain M. bourgensis MS2(T), originally isolated from a sewage sludge digestor, was completely sequenced to analyze putative adaptive genome features conferring competitiveness within biogas reactor environments to the strain. Sequencing and assembly of the M. bourgensis MS2(T) genome yielded a chromosome with a size of 2,789,773 bp. Comparative analysis of M. bourgensis MS2(T) and Methanoculleus marisnigri JR1 revealed…

Ciberacoso escolar, ajuste psicosocial e ideación suicida en la adolescencia

2019

ABTSRACT Cyberbullying has become a growing social concern among the scientific community and in society in general. The consequences of cyberbullying for the victim are quite serious; many indicators of social maladjustment have been found, with suicide ideation being especially noteworthy. From this perspective, the main objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between cybervictimization and suicide ideation in adolescent victims of cyberbullying through the psychosocial maladjustment variables of loneliness, depressive symptomatology, perceived stress, and psychological distress. Participants in this study were 1,062 adolescents (547 boys, 515 girls), ranging in age from …

Influencing the Self‐Sorting Behavior of [2.2]Paracyclophane‐Based Ligands by Introducing Isostructural Binding Motifs

2020

Abstract Two isostructural ligands with either nitrile (Lnit) or isonitrile (Liso) moieties directly connected to a [2.2]paracyclophane backbone with pseudo‐meta substitution pattern have been synthesized. The ligand itself (Lnit) or its precursors (Liso) were resolved by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase and the absolute configuration of the isolated enantiomers was assigned by XRD analysis and/or by comparison of quantum‐chemical simulated and experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Surprisingly, the resulting metallosupramolecular aggregates formed in solution upon coordination of [(dppp)Pd(OTf)2] differ in their composition: whereas Lnit forms dinuclear complexes, Liso…

Supramolecular polymerization of sulfated dendritic peptide amphiphiles into multivalent L-selectin binders

2021

The synthesis of a sulfate-modified dendritic peptide amphiphile and its self-assembly into one-dimensional rod-like architectures in aqueous medium is reported. The influence of the ionic strength on the supramolecular polymerization was probed via circular dichroism spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. Physiological salt concentrations efficiently screen the charges of the dendritic building block equipped with eight sulfate groups and trigger the formation of rigid supramolecular polymers. Since multivalent sulfated supramolecular structures mimic naturally occurring L-selectin ligands, the corresponding affinity was evaluated using a competitive SPR binding assay…

Flavonoids in Lemon and Grapefruit IntegroPectin

2021

Abstract Following the analysis of terpenes present in new lemon and grapefruit “IntegroPectin” pectins obtained via the hydrodynamic cavitation of industrial lemon and grapefruit processing waste, the HPLC‐MS analysis of flavonoid and other phenolic compounds reveals the presence of eriocitrin, naringin, hesperidin and kaempferol typical of the respective citrus fruits. The pectic fibers rich in rhamnogalacturonan‐I regions act as chemical sponges adsorbing and concentrating at their outer surface highly bioactive citrus flavonoids and terpenes. These findings, together with the unique molecular structure of these new whole citrus pectins, provide preliminary insight into the broad‐scope b…

A local notion of absolute continuity in IR^n

2005

We consider the notion of p, δ-absolute continuity for functions of several variables introduced in [2] and we investigate the validity of some basic properties that are shared by absolutely continuous functions in the sense of Maly. We introduce the class $δ−BV^p_loc(\Omega,IR^m)$ and we give a characterization of the functions belonging to this class.
