Imaging funzionale per diffusione (DWI) e ischemia cerebrale in fase acuta: Potenzialità diagnostiche e confronto con metodiche convenzionali

1997

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and is a major cause of long-term disability. Neuroprotective treatment within a 4-hour «therapeutic window» has proved highly efficacious in reducing morbility and mortality in animal model. It is with this background that the need for emergent diagnosis and therapy of acute stroke in strongly suggested. Computed tomography (CT) shows the parenchymal changes of acute stroke too late to be helpful, and its role has been primarily to evaluate the possibility of intracerebral or subarachnoid hemorrhage. While conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can demonstrate parenchymal abnormalities 4–6 hours after ischemia, newer techniques such as diff…

Analysis of Cerebral Vasospasm in a Murine Model of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage with High Frequency Transcranial Duplex Ultrasound

2021

Cerebral vasospasm that occurs in the weeks after subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of hemorrhagic stroke, contributes to delayed cerebral ischemia. A problem encountered in experimental studies using murine models of SAH is that methods for in vivo monitoring of cerebral vasospasm in mice are lacking. Here, we demonstrate the application of high frequency ultrasound to perform transcranial Duplex sonography examinations on mice. Using the method, the internal carotid arteries (ICA) could be identified. The blood flow velocities in the intracranial ICAs were accelerated significantly after induction of SAH, while blood flow velocities in the extracranial ICAs remained low, indicating cerebral…

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and fibrosis: correlation between late gadolinium enhancement on CMR and speckle tracking imaging using Ultrasound

2015

Background Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most frequent genetic cardiovascular disorder and represents one of the most common cause of heart related sudden death in young adults. Myocardial fibrosis seems to be an independant predictor of adverse events including sudden death, ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure. While late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is actually the gold-standard to detect fibrosis, new techniques are being evaluated such as 2D strain echocardiography.

Differences in Inter-Rectus Distance and Abdominopelvic Function between Nulliparous, Primiparous and Multiparous Women

2021

Widening of the inter-rectus distance (IRD) is highly prevalent among postpartum women and can lead to dysfunction of abdominopelvic muscles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in IRD and abdominopelvic function between nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 women (25 nulliparous, 25 primiparous and 25 multiparous at 6 months postpartum). The participants underwent ultrasound assessment under three conditions (at rest, abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) and curl-up) at two locations (2 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus). Furthermore, abdominopelvic muscle function was determined by prone, supine and side bridge tests…

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived aortic compliance, distensibility and pulse wave velocity at rest and during a supine bicycle exercise in y…

2014

Background Purpose: Risk of aortic rupture is evaluated based on the vessel diameter; this parameter is probably insufficient. In vivo evaluation of biomechanical property of the aortic tissue might be of interest to discriminate between normal and altered aortic tissue (A Lalande et al, JMRI 2008). The purpose of this study was to describe a technique to measure regional aortic compliance (AC), aortic distensibility (AD) and aortic stiffness with 1.5 T MRI in young individuals under resting conditions and during supine bicycle exercise.

Plain film, CT and MRI sensibility in the evaluation of intraorbital foreign bodies in an in vitro model of the orbit and in pig eyes.

2000

Detection and characterization of intraorbital foreign bodies (IFB) is fundamental in acute trauma setting, preventing inflammatory sequelae or complications related to IFB movements when a MRI study is planned. Papers concerning plain film and CT sensibility in IFB detection show controversial results. For this reason we investigated plain film, CT and MRI sensibility in the evaluation of IFB. For an in vitro model, specimens of dry and fresh wood, glass, iron, plastic and graphite were immersed in animal lard and in a 0.9 % sodium chloride plus 3.5 g/dl human serum albumin solution. Specimens of different size and nature where also implanted into enucleated pig eyes. Air bubbles were intr…

Modulation of central corneal thickness by various riboflavin eyedrop compositions in porcine corneas

2012

Purpose To evaluate the modulatory effect of various riboflavin 0.1% and 0.2% compositions on the central corneal thickness (CCT) in fresh porcine corneas. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Design Experimental study. Methods The CCT in freshly enucleated porcine globes was measured by ultrasound pachymetry before and after (if applicable) deepithelialization and every 10 minutes thereafter during 120 minutes of eyedrop application. In Groups 1 and 2 (controls), no eyedrops were applied. In Groups 3 and 4, isotonic riboflavin eyedrops were used. In Groups 5 to 9, hypotonic riboflavin eyedrops were given. In Groups 10 and 11, preparat…

Intracoronary Infusion of Thioflavin-S to Study Microvascular Obstruction in a Model of Myocardial Infarction

2015

Abstract Introduction and objectives Microvascular obstruction exerts deleterious effects after myocardial infarction. To elucidate the role of ischemia-reperfusion injury on the occurrence and dynamics of microvascular obstruction, we performed a preliminary methodological study to accurately define this process in an in vivo model. Methods Myocardial infarction was induced in swine by means of 90-min of occlusion of the mid left anterior descending coronary artery using angioplasty balloons . Intracoronary infusion of thioflavin-S was applied and compared with traditional intra-aortic or intraventricular instillation. The left anterior descending coronary artery perfused area and microvas…
