Association between low-frequency ultrasound and hip fractures - comparison with DXA-based BMD

2014

Background: New methods for diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating fracture risk are being developed. We aim to study the association between low-frequency (LF) axial transmission ultrasound and hip fracture risk in a population-based sample of older women. Methods: The study population consisted of 490 community-dwelling women (78 – 82 years). Ultrasound velocity (V LF ) at mid-tibia was measured in 2006 using a low-frequency scanning axial transmission device. Bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method. The fracture history of the participants was collected from December 1997 until the end of 2010. Li…

Topics in calculus and geometry on metric spaces

2022

In this thesis we present an overview of some important known facts related to topology, geometry and calculus on metric spaces. We discuss the well known problem of the existence of a lipschitz equivalent metric to a given quasiultrametric, revisiting known results and counterexamples and providing some new theorems, in an unified approach. Also, in the general setting of a quasi-metric doubling space, suitable partition of unity lemmas allows us to obtain, in step two Carnot groups, the well known Whitney’s extension theorem for a given real function of class C^m defined on a closed subset of the whole space: this result relies on relevant properties of the symmetrized Taylor’s polynomial…

Strongly Coupled Coherent Phonons in Single-Layer MoS 2

2019

We present a transient absorption setup combining broadband detection over the visible-UV range with high temporal resolution ($\sim$20fs) which is ideally suited to trigger and detect vibrational coherences in different classes of materials. We generate and detect coherent phonons (CPs) in single layer (1L) MoS$_2$, as a representative semiconducting 1L-transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), where the confined dynamical interaction between excitons and phonons is unexplored. The coherent oscillatory motion of the out-of-plane $A'_{1}$ phonons, triggered by the ultrashort laser pulses, dynamically modulates the excitonic resonances on a timescale of few tens fs. We observe an enhancement by…

Medial Gastrocnemius Muscle Architecture Is Altered After Exhaustive Stretch-Shortening Cycle Exercise

2019

Muscle architecture is an important component of muscle function, and recent studies have shown changes in muscle architecture with fatigue. The stretch-shortening cycle is a natural way to study human locomotion, but little is known about how muscle architecture is affected by this type of exercise. This study investigated potential changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle architecture after exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle exercise. Male athletes (n = 10) performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and maximal drop jump (DJ) tests before and after an exercise task consisting of 100 maximal DJs followed by successive rebound jumping to 70% of the initial maximal height. The exerci…

Muscle‐tendon morphology and function following long‐term exposure to repeated and strenuous mechanical loading

2020

We mapped structural and functional characteristics of muscle‐tendon units in a population exposed to very long‐term routine overloading. Twenty‐eight military academy cadets (age: 21.00 ± 1.1 yrs; height: 176.1 ± 4.8 cm; mass: 73.8 ± 7.0 kg) exposed for over 24 months to repetitive overloading were profiled via ultrasonography with a senior subgroup of them (n = 11; age = 21.4 ± 1.0 yrs; height = 176.5 ± 4.8 cm; mass = 71.4 ± 6.6 kg) also tested while walking and marching on a treadmill. A group of eleven ethnicity‐ and aged‐matched civilians (age = 21.6 ± 0.7 yrs; height = 176.8 ± 4.3 cm; mass = 74.6 ± 5.6 kg) was also profiled and tested. Cadets and civilians exhibited similar morphology…

Contributions of biomechanical modeling and machine learning to the automatic registration of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance and Transrectal Echo…

2022
