Retinal ultrastructure of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis in the Dalmatian dog

Ultrastructural studies of the retinae in two NCL-affected Dalmatian dogs revealed ubiquitous accumulation of lipopigments in numerous cell types of the retina, the fine structure of which closely resembled that seen in NCL-affected English setters. Photoreceptors and other retinal cell types were largely intact. These findings show that the retinal involvement in NCL of our Dalmatian dogs is identical to that of NCL-affected English setters. It also shows that in canine NCL a severe retinopathy, regularly encountered in human childhood NCL, does not develop. Ultrastructural study of the retina in late infantile metachromatic leukodystrophy.

The autopsy of a 2-year-old girl revealed a clinically unrecognized metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) due to an aryl-sulfatase A deficiency, characteristically affecting the central and peripheral nervous system by demyelination and by accumulation of metachromatic material. The retina though reported clinically as normal, showed the same demyelinating process in the optic nerve including the papilla but an additional intraneuronal storage of MLD-typical lysosomal residual bodies in ganglion cell perikarya of the retina. Lateral reorganization of plasma membrane is involved in the yeast resistance to severe dehydration

Ultrastructure of posterior sternal glands of Macrotermes annandalei (Silvestri): new members of the sexual glandular set found in termites (Insecta).

In female alates of Macrotermes annandalei, two types of abdominal glands are involved in the secretion of sex pheromone. Tergal glands are found at the anterior margin of tergites 6-10 and posterior sternal glands (PSGs) are located at the anterior margin of sternites 6-7. The cytological features of both types of glands are quite similar. The fine structural organization of PSGs is studied more precisely and described for the first time. Ascidian swimming larvae are entirely surrounded by a hyaline extracellular coat, called as tunic or test, on which numerous test cells adhere. The functional role played by test cells in larvae of various ascidian species consists in depositing submicroscopic structures known as ornaments and/or substances of proteoglycan nature in the larval test surface. The deposition of ornaments would render the larval test hydrophilic and thus allow the larvae to swim being immersed in sea water. Elongate plasmodia with myxosporean spores belonging to the genus Unicapsula, Davis, 1924 were found in the skeletal muscle of the striped seabream, Lithognathus mormyrus (L.), a candidate for the mediterranean aquaculture.
