Tourism SME sustainability social and economic challenges during pandemic: cases of Russian Federation, Georgia and Latvia
2021
Until 2020, the tourism industry was characterized by a growth rate, the statistics highlight that globally 2019 was the tenth year with a consecutive annual growth. However, the Covid-19 pandemic marked a major turning point in the development of tourism, instead of tourism overdevelopment, the underdevelopment issues appeared in front pages of the industry news. The effects of the pandemic are intensified by the fact that tourism is a labour-intensive industry and that most companies in the sector are SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises). At this time, it is crucially important to look at sustainability issues, therefore the aim of this study is to analyse the social and economic dim…
Integration of distributed healthcare information systems: application of CEN/TC251 ENV13606
2005
Everyday, more and more, the healthcare sector requires the exchange of healthcare information between professionals from different disciplines and institutions. To support co-operative work among health professionals and institutions it is necessary to share healthcare information about patients in a meaningful way. But, nowadays, in most hospitals the heath data is distributed across several heterogeneous and autonomous information systems whose interconnection is difficult to achieve. Integration of such system may bring about many advantages such as consistent patient health records or interdepartmental workflows. In this paper, an overview of a computing system prototype, currently und…
Cerebellum and Prematurity: A Complex Interplay Between Disruptive and Dysmaturational Events.
2021
The cerebellum plays a critical regulatory role in motor coordination, cognition, behavior, language, memory, and learning, hence overseeing a multiplicity of functions. Cerebellar development begins during early embryonic development, lasting until the first postnatal years. Particularly, the greatest increase of its volume occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy, which represents a critical period for cerebellar maturation. Preterm birth and all the related prenatal and perinatal contingencies may determine both dysmaturative and lesional events, potentially involving the developing cerebellum, and contributing to the constellation of the neuropsychiatric outcomes with several impl…
I minori sono Cosa Nostra? Criminalità organizzata, devianza minorile e sistema giudiziario a Palermo e Catania
2009
Do All Juveniles Belong to Cosa Nostra? Palermo and Catania are the two main cities of Sicily - Despite the fact that they share similar problems, such as underdevelopment, unemployment and social deprivation, the Juvenile Courts of the two cities apply different policies when dealing with juvenile deviants. When the same kind of crimes committed by juvenile defendants are considered, the Palermo court is found to be more lenient than its counterpart in Cata235 nia. Seeking an explanation for this discrepancy, the two authors discuss figures and use qualitative material to argue that it must be connected to the different relationship between organised crime and juvenile deviance in the two …
Development of Customer-Orientation, Brand-Orientation and Business Performance within the First Ten Years of the Firm
2017
The business performance of young firms is significantly influenced by customer- and brand-oriented capabilities. These capabilities can be sustained competitive advantages for firms from an early age on and managers need to consciously develop them over time. In the first years, the development of these firms is still highly dependent on their environment. The products and services are still under development, and there are only little resources and market information available. Therefore, the development of customer-orientation, brand-orientation and their impact on business performance at this age is crucial to be understood for founders to appropriately manage these capabilities. The pu…
Ambizioni e insuccessi di alcune politiche di sviluppo locale per il Mezzogiorno. Patti territoriali e Programmi integrati territoriali (Pit)
2008
In 1997 a “new programming” was launched in Italy by the Department of development and cohesion policies in Rome. One of the key features of this new phase was the emphasis on “endogenous” local development, i.e. a development which is mainly based on local actors and productive specializations. The new programming strikingly failed to deliver its expected results. Some wrong expectations were fostered with regard to local political elites (§§ 1). A certain concept of local development is inherently flawed (§§ 2). The first failure was that of “territorial agreements” (patti territoriali), but there is a remarkable reluctancy to admit it (§§ 3). Another experience of “local” development who…
Some Thoughts on the Independence of Party-Appointed Expert in International Arbitration
2021
Participation of experts in both commercial arbitration proceedings and investment arbitration proceedings is a well-known phenomenon for decades. A trend asking for parties-appointed experts to be independent is under development since the end of the twentieth century. The aim of this chapter is, at first, to make the point on this issue by analysing some of the most important current rules dedicated to international arbitration. The observation to be made is that the evolution described is not that developed so far in international arbitration. In a second time the need and relevance of this new requirement are addressed. It appears then that the meaning of this demand is far from being c…
Local Knowledge and Resources as Driving Forces of Sustainable Bioeconomy
2018
A major driving force to promote the idea of sustainable bioeconomy could be local experiences, skills and knowledge in respect to the use of local and natural materials (at first, biomaterials). Sustainable bioeconomy is a concept under development, and as such it requires argumentation and demonstration of efficiency. The aim of this chapter is to study the local knowledge of the Baltic region in terms of the applicability of local biomaterials in production. In the context of bioeconomy, there is an evident need to identify the possibilities for the use of natural and local materials as well as the knowledge to manage these resources. Natural materials of the Baltic region, such as hemp,…
