Dire comunità nel secondo Novecento italiano
2019
This article presents the most recent literature about the Adriano Olivetti’s concrete community. The current "Olivetti-Renaissance" is highlighted, testifying the growing interest in Olivetti's political and community proposal to building a new participatory democracy.
La Persona nel Comunitararismo di Adriano Olivetti
2020
This paper introduces to the idea of person that Adriano Olivetti placed at the center of his community project in post-World War II Italy. The central hypothesis is that the original olivettian personalism did not originate from his contact with the philosophers of the magazine "Esprit", but from the experiences lived by Olivetti in his factory that he transformed into an educational community, a place of flowering of person and a laboratory of democratic education. His political project of a community democracy had a religious foundation and was meant to promote the person. To fulfill this mission, Olivetti made his factory a school of human and professional education where the work was r…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
Cancer: New Needs, New Models. Is It Time for a Community Oncologist? Another Brick in the Wall
2021
Simple Summary Community care activity in the oncology field does not exist. This unmet need contrasts with the increasing number of patients with a previous diagnosis of cancer. Abstract Over the last few decades, thanks to early detection, effective drugs, and personalized treatments, the natural history of cancer has radically changed. Thanks to these advances, we have observed how survival of cancer patients has increased, becoming an ever more important goal in cancer care. Effective clinical governance of survivorship care is essential to ensure a successful transition between active and post-treatment life, identifying optimization of healthcare outcomes and quality of life for patie…
Autoimmunity predicts prolonged survival in colon cancer patients undergoing GOLFIG biochemotherapy
2007
14542 Background: A multi-center phase II trial has been designed to evaluate toxicity, anti-tumour and immune-biological activity of the bio-chemotherapy GOLFIG regimen in advanced colorectal cancer (A-CRC). Methods: The trial involved 46 patients (34/46 2nd line or more). The biweekly GOLFIG regimen consisted of gemcitabine (1,000 mg/m2, day 1), oxaliplatin (85 mg/m2, day 2), levofolinic acid (100 mg /m2, day 1,2) and 5-FU (400 mg/m2 as a bolus, and 800 mg/m2 as 24 hour infusion, days 1,2) followed by sc GM-CSF (100 μg, days 3 to 8) and sc IL-2 (0.5 X 106 IUs twice a day, days 9 to 14). Results: GOLFIG regimen was well tolerated and resulted very active (ORR = 56.5%; disease control = 91…
Testicular germ-cell tumours and penile squamous cell carcinoma: Appropriate management makes the difference
2019
Germ-cell tumours (GCT) of the testis and penile squamous cell carcinoma (PeSCC) are a rare and a very rare uro-genital cancers, respectively. Both tumours are well defined entities in terms of management, where specific recommendations - in the form of continuously up-to-dated guide lines- are provided. Impact of these tumour is relevant. Testicular GCT affects young, healthy men at the beginning of their adult life. PeSCC affects older men, but a proportion of these patients are young and the personal consequences of the disease may be devastating. Deviation from recommended management may be a reason of a significant prognostic worsening, as proper treatment favourably impacts on these t…
Immunoglobulin Kappa C Predicts Overall Survival in Node-Negative Breast Cancer
2012
Background: Biomarkers of the immune system are currently not used as prognostic factors in breast cancer. We analyzedthe association of the B cell/plasma cell marker immunoglobulin kappa C (IGKC) and survival of untreated node-negative breast cancer patients.Material and Methods: IGKC expression was evaluated by immunostaining in a cohort of 335 node-negative breast cancer patients with a median follow-up of 152 months. The prognostic significance of IGKC for disease-free survival (DFS) and breast cancer-specific overall survival (OS) was evaluated with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis as well as univariate and multivariate Cox analysis adjusted for age at diagnosis, pT stage, histological g…
OR18-03 Functional TSH Receptor Antibodies Are a Biomarker for Graves’ Disease - a Prospective Trial
2020
Abstract Objective We aimed to evaluate the clinical utility and predictive value of stimulatory (TSAb) and blocking (TBAb) TSH receptor antibodies in the management of Graves’ disease (GD). Methods Hundred well-defined, consecutive, unselected, untreated hyperthyroid patients with GD were enrolled in a prospective two-year trial. Methimazole (MMI) was administered for 24 weeks according to baseline serum concentrations of free T3/free T4. Starting dose was 5–30 mg/day. Through a titration regimen, this dose was respectively tapered or increased at each subsequent study visit as the patient became euthyroid or remained hyperthyroid. Goals of therapy were to maintain normal fT4 and TSH level…
Clinical Validation of a Novel Elispot-Based Diagnostic Assay: Monitoring Cytomegalovirus-Specific Cell-Mediated Immunity and Risk Stratification in …
2019
Increasing evidence suggests that impaired cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific cell-mediated immunity (CMV-CMI) is a major cause of uncontrolled CMV reactivations and associated complications in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). No reliable test exists to predict patients at risk of primary and/or recurrent CMV reactivations following HSCT. Accurately assessing CMV-CMI might therefore improve the risk stratification of patients and allow optimizing and individualizing patient care. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of a novel IFN-γ ELISpot assay (T-Track® CMV), based on the stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with T-activated® pp65 and IE-1 CMV proteins, to…
Anticoagulation with Factor Xa Inhibitors Is Associated with Improved Overall Response and Progression-Free Survival in Patients with Metastatic Mali…
2021
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) significantly improved the prognosis of advanced melanoma patients. However, many patients do not derive long-term benefit from ICI therapy due to primary and acquired resistance. In this regard, it has been shown that coagulation factors contribute to cancer immune evasion and might therefore promote resistance to ICI. In particular, recent observations in murine systems demonstrated that myeloid-derived factor Xa (FXa) impedes anti-tumor immunity in the tumor microenvironment and that the oral FXa inhibitor (FXa-i) rivaroxaban synergizes with ICI. The synergistic effect of FXa inhibitors with clinical ICI therapy is unknown. We performed a retrospective …
