Mapping routine measles vaccination in low- and middle-income countries
2021
The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1–4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5–8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhoo…
Molecular mechanisms of primary and secondary mucosal immunity using avian infectious bronchitis virus as a model system
2007
Although mucosal immune responses are critical for protection of hosts from clinical illness and even mortality caused by mucosal pathogens, the molecular mechanism of mucosal immunity, which is independent of systemic immunity, remains elusive. To explore the mechanistic basis of mucosal protective immunity, gene transcriptional profiling in mucosal tissues was evaluated after the primary and secondary immunization of animals with an attenuated avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a prototype of Coronavirus and a well-characterized mucosal pathogen. Results showed that a number of innate immune factors including toll-like receptors (TLRs), retinoic-acid-inducible gene-1 (RIG-1), type I…
Toll signal transduction pathway in bivalves: Complete cds of intermediate elements and related gene transcription levels in hemocytes of immune stim…
2014
Based on protein domain structure and organization deduced from mRNA contigs, 15 transcripts of the Toll signaling pathway have been identified in the bivalve, Mytilus galloprovincialis. Identical searches performed on publicly available Mytilus edulis ESTs revealed 11 transcripts, whereas searches performed in genomic and new transcriptome sequences of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, identified 21 Toll-related transcripts. The remarkable molecular diversity of TRAF and IKK coding sequences of C. gigas, suggests that the sequence data inferred from Mytilus cDNAs may not be exhaustive. Most of the Toll pathway genes were constitutively and ubiquitously expressed in M. galloprovinciali…
Hsp60 in Inflammatory Disorders
2019
Heat shock proteins (HSP) including HSP60 are immunogenic proteins shared by particular microbial agents and mammals. HSP60 has been implicated in multiple inflammatory disorders and autoimmune diseases mostly through its interactions with the immune system. Such diseases include inflammatory bowel disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis and even atherosclerosis plaques among others. It is present in the cytosol, cell membrane, cell surface as well as in the extracellular space and in the circulation. As a super antigen, HSP60 has the dual role as an immunomodulator and as a biomarker, a node molecule in balance between …
THE COMMUNITY AS A SOURCE OF SOCIAL SUPPORT: EVALUATION AND IMPLICATIONS AT THE INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY LEVELS
2006
Rituals During Lockdown : The "Clap for our Carers" Phenomenon in France
2020
The article will analyse the emergence of the applause for health workers to health personnel, a practice widespread in France since the first day of lockdown. We examine the meaning of this ritual that was first promoted on the web and then adopted by the social actors themselves in the semi-private space of windows and balconies. We will investigate the relationships and the meaning of this practice both on the web and in the social space.

2016
Negotiating informal housing in Metro Manila : forging communities through participation
2016
This research project examines socialized housing programs available to informal settlers in the megacity of Metro Manila, Philippines, and the socio-political and institutional relationships that enable or impede access to housing. Megacities are urban agglomerations with populations of over 10 million inhabitants and Asia and Africa contain some of the fastest growing cities in the world. The challenge of Southern governments to meet the housing needs of hundreds of thousands of urban poor is exacerbated by the influx of migrants into these economic hubs, the scarcity of land for low-income housing and the inequalities and infrastructure deficiencies in developing countries’ cities. The s…
