Gender differences related to the presence of atrial fibrillation in older hypertensive patients
2013
AIM: To determine whether there are gender differences in the epidemiological profile of atrial fibrillation (AF) and to characterise the clinical, biochemical, and therapeutic factors associated with AF. METHODS: Each investigator (primary care physicians or physicians based in hospital units for hypertension treatment) recruited the first 3 patients with an age of ≥ 65 years and a clinical diagnosis of hypertension (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and an electrocardiogram, were performed) on the first working day of the week for 5 wk and identified those individuals with atrial fibrillation. A binary logistic regression was performed, including all of the variables that were signific…
Comparison of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Transformed Acute Myeloid Leukemia Derived from MDS, CMML or MPN. a Report of the Chronic Mali…
2016
Abstract Introduction Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) can progress to acute myeloid leukemia (transformed AML). The aim of this EBMT registry study was to compare 3 year outcome in patients with transformed AMLwho received allogeneic stem cell transplantation according to the primary disease. Patients and Methods Within the European Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) registry, we found 4214 patients (female: 39%, male: 61%) with transformed acute myeloid leukemia, who received allogeneic stem cell transplantation between 2000 and 2014. The primary disease was MDS (n=3541), CMML (n=251) or MPN (n=4…
Ischemic Type Biliary Lesions nach orthotoper Lebertransplantation - ein immunologisches Problem?
2004
Ischemic type biliary lesions (ITBL) are a major complication following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). In many cases re-OLT is indicated. Multiple factors have been claimed to be reasonable for ITBL; here we present a new immunological risk factor: CC-Chemokines play a key role in the recruitment of leukocytes during ischemia-reperfusion damage and acute rejection. Therefore the CC-chemokine-receptor 5 (CCR5) and its functionless CCR5-delta-32-polymorphism (CCR5Δ32) might have an influence on the grafts pathology after OLT. In 146 patients after OLT the CCR5 was analyzed with regard to the CCR5Δ32 by PCR. 120 patients (82,1%) showed a normal receptor (wildtype) whereas 26 patients …
P255 Efficacy and safety of a restrictive ferric carboxymaltose infusion strategy for iron deficiency anemia in inflammatory bowel disease patients
2021
Abstract Background Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common condition in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) has shown fast correction of hemoglobin (Hb) levels and good tolerability. We evaluated the response to FCM in IBD patients with IDA. The primary outcome was the assessment of the rate of response to single or multiple FCM infusions after 12 months from the first infusion. Secondary outcomes were the response to a single FCM infusion after 3 months and the assessment of FCM safety. Methods We retrospectively included 185 consecutive patients from IBD Unit of “Villa Sofia-V. Cervello” Hospital who received at least a dose of 500 mg FCM infus…
EP485 Confounding factors of trans-vaginal ultrasonography accuracy in endometrial cancer
2019
Introduction/Background Endometrial cancer is the most frequently diagnosed gynecological tumor with more than 60.000 new cases each year. Following the ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO consensus conference, patients are classified in different classes of risk for lymph node metastases based on the instrumental suspected stage of the disease. In this scenario, a correct pre-operative workup is essential for a proper planning treatment offered to the patient. Although most of the oncological centers have replaced the MRI with trans-vaginal ultrasound, this, in the international guidelines, is considered only in the fertility sparing and in cases of contraindicated MRI. The Aim of our study is to evaluate the…
Clinical Validation of the Myelofibrosis Transplant Scoring System in an Independent Series of Myelofibrosis Patients Undergoing Allogeneic Hematopoi…
2019
Introduction: Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) constitutes the only curative treatment for myelofibrosis (MF), but its associated toxicity remains high. Prognostic risk models are widely used in clinical practice to select those MF patients who are more likely to benefit from transplantation. Recently, a new prognostic model, the Myelofibrosis Transplant Scoring System (MTSS), has been developed to predict the outcome of MF patients undergoing allo-HCT (Gagelmann N et al, Blood 2019). We aimed to evaluate the performance of such model in an independent series of patients. Methods: This is a retrospective study that included all adult patients who underwent first allo…
Colorectal Cancer in Patients with Type 2 Diebetes Mellitus: Retrospective Analysis of 741 Cases
2012
ABSTRACT Background Understanding the risk factors of colorectal cancer (CRC) is crucial to the development of effective strategies for its prevention. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with increased CRC risk and epidemiological studies identified a correlation between these diseases. Aim: To evaluate prevalence of CRC in a cohort of Caucasian patients with type 2 DM and the association with other variables previously known to be related with increased CRC. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 741 DM 2 patients followed in our institution of southern Italy between 2000-2008 for the incidence of CRC. Patients were stratified based on gender, age, body mass index (BMI), alcohol and…
Primary angioplasty versus intravenous thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction: can we define subgroups of patients benefiting most from primary …
2001
Abstract OBJECTIVES We sought to determine the effectiveness of primary angioplasty compared with thrombolysis in clinical practice. BACKGROUND In clinical practice, primary angioplasty for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not yet been proven more effective than intravenous thrombolysis, nor have subgroups of patients been identified who would perhaps benefit from primary angioplasty. METHODS The pooled data of two AMI registries—the Maximal Individual TheRapy in Acute myocardial infarction (MITRA) study and the Myocardial Infarction Registry (MIR)—were analyzed. A total of 9,906 lytic-eligible patients with AMI, with a pre-hospital delay of ≤12 h, were treated with ei…
0200: Predictors of angiographically visible distal embolization in ST elevation myocardial infarction patients treated by primary percutaneous coron…
2016
Aspiration thrombectomy during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (p-PCI) in ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been proposed to restore myocardial reperfusion. But important controversies remain concerning the usefulness of thrombectomy to improve this perfusion. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of manual thrombectomy on the occur-rence of angiographically visible distal embolization (AVDE) during p-PCI in STEMI. 346 consecutive patients admitted for STEMI who underwent p-PCI and thrombectomy were included. Clinical, angiographic and therapeutics characteristics were assessed. AVDE was defined as an abrupt vessel closure occurring at any point during the PCI pro…
249 Validation of assessment of circulate oxidative stress markers by the Free Oxygen Radicals Testing (FORT) assay among patients with an acute myoc…
2011
BackgroundFree oxygen radicals play an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and aging. Several methods were developed for the direct or indirect measurement of oxygen free radical and its by-products. Using a new Free Oxygen Radicals Testing (FORT) the current study is designed first to validate the device and to investigate the potential relationships between the ROS and clinical or biological factors in human serum from a population of men with an acute myocardial infarction (AMI).MethodsWe first determined the effect of storage, variability and reproducibility of the FORT test in serum. Then we used the test in 66 patient…
