A Survey on Daylighting Education in Italian Universities : Knowledge of Standards, Metrics and Simulation Tools

2021

Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low …

Investigating snowcover volumes and icings dynamics in the moraine of an Arctic catchment using UAV/ photogrammetry and LiDAR

2016

International audience; Means for assessing the contribution of the terminal moraine into the water budget of an Arctic glacier is investigated: on the one hand the terminal moraine represents a significant fraction (22%)of the catchment area of the glacier under investigation – Austre Lovenbreen, in the Brøgger peninsula, Spitsbergen – and on the other hand icings formation (or aufeis) each winter illustrates the contribution of subglacial water flow. While over the glacier, with a smooth surface readily interpolated, the winter and summer mass balances are assessed with only a few sparsely distributed stakes, such an approach is not valid with the rough topography of the glacier moraine: …

Impact of recent climate change in the Arctic on snow physical parameters retrieval using SAR data (Svalbard)

2019

International audience; Arctic snow cover dynamics exhibit strong changes in terms of extent and duration due to recent climate changeconditions (Mudryk et al., 2018; Lemke & Jacobi, 2011). In this context, innovative observation methods arehelpful for a better comprehension of the role of the snow for climate research and hydrology. The spatialvariability of snow properties is here addressed for the Ny-Ålesund area, Svalbard (N 78◦55’ / E 11◦55’) usingsatellite radar images in the X-band. This remote sensing method removes the limitations and ambiguities ofoptical imaging limited by the polar night and cloud cover. This study contributes to the “Precip-A2” project (OSUG@2020, Grenoble, Fran…

Joy of Mathematical Modelling: A Forgotten Perspective?

2020

We argue the relevance of including an affective perspective in the mathematical modelling education research and emphasise its importance for the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling at all levels, especially at the university. Our argument is supported by a recent survey of mathematics lecturers’ views on mathematical modelling, several follow-up interviews, and a review of literature on mathematical modelling that relates to enjoyment, pleasure, and appreciation. Findings from the survey and the follow-up interviews indicate that there is a group of practitioners who hold strong views on the importance of enjoyment in doing and teaching mathematical modelling.

In this article, we propose a study of El mal querer (Rosalía, 2018) based on a formal, aesthetic and iconographic analysis of the five video clips published until now. A symbolic approach to its conceptual universe is defended, postulating the creation of a particular imaginary through the resignification of categories…

Questions in Cognitive Mimetics

2021

Human thinking advances through questions and answers. Any field of human endeavor is permeated by the presence of questions, answers and presuppositions. Questions have a kind of universality, whereby one can place the question marks on anything, including questions themselves. The process of asking the right questions about the right things and in the right way are key for the explication of an approach. Recently, we have begun thinking about an approach to the design of intelligent technology: Cognitive mimetics. In brief, the idea is to take inspiration of empirical human thinking in specific contexts to develop AI solutions. The purpose of this article is to question this approach from…
