Cultural identity gaps : a study of Zadie Smith's novels White teeth (2001) and On beauty (2006)
2014
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma käsittelee kulttuuri-identiteetin ”rakoja” (eng. Identity gaps) kahdessa Zadie Smithin monikulttuurisessa romaanissa: Valkoiset hampaat (2001) ja Kauneudesta (2006). Identiteettirakojen (identity gaps) käsite on osa erästä viestinnän identiteettiteoriaa (Communication Theory of Identity eli CTI), jonka mukaan identiteetit koostuvat neljästä eri kehyksestä (eng. Identity frames): henkilökohtainen (personal), esitetty (enacted), henkilöidenvälinen (relational) ja yhteisöllinen (communal). Nämä kehykset ovat aina läsnä jokaisessa viestintätilanteessa. Jos tasojen välille syntyy ristiriita, on tuloksena ns. identiteettirako.
L'érosion des versants viticoles de Côte d'Or.
2007
The wine slopes of Côte d'Or (Burgundy, France) are subject to the combined effects of runoff/erosion processes and intense cultivation practices. The purpose of this study is to characterize the erosion processes, and to quantify the sedimentary dynamics over different time scales and spatial scales. Sedimentary budgets show that the studied slopes, with grounds that are made very sensitive to the runoff phenomena by intensive mechanisation, are subject to erosion rates of several millimetres per year. Overflow triggering and its extension, which determine sediment transfer distances, are dependent on a runoff threshold. The existence of this threshold is observed through the analysis of t…
Pathogenic mechanisms of how human parvovirus breaks self-tolerance
2017
It is known that viral infections can cause acute, chronic, and autoimmune diseases (ADs). However, the mechanism of how a persistent viral infection contributes to ADs remains still unclear. In this thesis, pathological and immunological aspects of how common viruses can initiate autoimmunity were investigated, and human parvovirus B19 (B19V) was employed as a model virus. B19V non-structural protein 1 (NS1), a superfamily 3 (SF3) helicase, initiated DNA damage resulting in cellular apoptosis. The apoptotic bodies (ApoBods) induced by B19V NS1 were purified and characterized. These ApoBods contained viral NS1 proteins with modified autoimmune-associated self-antigens, e.g. DNA, Smith, Apol…
Characterizing the bacterial fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare, and some factors affecting its pathogenicity
2010
Flavobacterium columnare is a bacterial pathogen of fresh water fish causing lethal columnaris disease worldwide. At Finnish fish farms, columnaris disease has occurred since the early 1980s, and is a serious problem in salmonid farming in Finland. Currently, the only effective treatment is with antibiotics. Factors related to the pathogenicity of F. columnare, transmission of columnaris disease and the immunity of salmonids to columnaris infections are poorly known. F. columnare strains isolated from Finnish fish farms were characterized geno- and phenotypically, virulence and transmission experiments were conducted, and the efficacy of two immunostimulants against columnaris infections in…
Incidence and dynamics of active cytomegalovirus infection in allogeneic stem cell transplant patients according to single nucleotide polymorphisms i…
2014
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in the activation or regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses may modulate the susceptibility to and the natural history of certain chronic viral infections. The current study aimed to investigate whether donor and recipient SNPs in the chemokine receptor 5 (rs1800023), monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (rs13900), interleukin-10 (rs1878672), and Toll-like receptor 9 (rs352140) genes would exert any influence on the rate of incidence and features of CMV DNAemia in the allogeneic stem cell transplantation setting. This was a retrospective observational multicenter study. The cohort consisted of 102 non-consecutive allogeneic …
IgA-Dominant Infection-Associated Glomerulonephritis Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection
2021
The renal involvement of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been reported. The etiology of kidney injury appears to be tubular, mainly due to the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the key joint receptor for SARS-CoV-2; however, cases with glomerular implication have also been documented. The multifactorial origin of this renal involvement could include virus-mediated injury, cytokine storm, angiotensin II pathway activation, complement dysregulation, hyper-coagulation, and microangiopathy. We present the renal histological findings from a patient who developed acute kidney injury and de novo nephrotic syndrome, highly suggestive of acute IgA-domina…
