Fibroadipose Vascular Anomaly of the Upper Extremity
2021
ABSTRACT Alomari and colleagues described in 2014 for the first time a distinct combination of vascular malformation, fibrofatty muscular infiltration and contracture which was termed fibroadipose vascular anomaly (FAVA) (J Pediatr Orthoped 34, 109-117 (2014). So far only few publications (J Pediatr Orthoped (2014) 34, 109-117; J Hand Surg (2020). 45, 68.e1, 68.e13; Ann Vasc Dis (2014) 7, 316-319; Pediatr Radiol 46, 1179-1186 (2016)) concerning this newly described disease have been published, covering only a limited number of cases. We present a case of a 19-year-old male patient suffering from a FAVA of the proximal forearm with a severe contracture of the infiltrated flexor musculature. …
Assessment of Kinect V2 for elbow range of motion estimation in people with haemophilia using an angle correction model
2018
Introduction The joint range of motion (ROM) is an important clinical parameter used to assess the loss of functionality resulting from joint bleedings in people with haemophilia. These episodes require a close follow-up and, to decrease patients' hospital dependence, telemedicine tools are needed. Therefore, this study is aimed to analyse the validity of the Microsoft Kinect V2 sensor with corrected angle measurement to be used in the monitoring of elbow ROM in people with haemophilia. Methods A convenience sample of 10 healthy controls (CG) and 10 patients with haemophilia with elbow arthropathy (HG) participated in this study. Full ROM of elbow joints was measured in the frontal view wit…
Muscle activity levels in upper-body push exercises with different loads and stability conditions.
2014
Exercises that aim to stimulate muscular hypertrophy and increase neural drive to the muscle fibers should be used during rehabilitation. Thus, it is of interest to identify optimal exercises that efficiently achieve high muscle activation levels. The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activation levels during push-up variations (ie, suspended push-ups with/without visual input on different suspension systems, and push-ups on the floor with/without additional elastic resistance) with the bench press exercise and the standing cable press exercise both performed at 50%, 70%, and 85% of the 1-repetition maximum.Young fit male university students (N = 29) performed 3 repetitions in …
The influence of a depressed scapular alignment on upper limb neural tissue mechanosensitivity and local pressure pain sensitivity
2017
A depressed scapular alignment could lead to prolonged and repetitive stress or compression of the brachial plexus, resulting in sensitization of neural tissue. However, no study has investigated the influence of alignment of the scapulae on sensitization of upper limb neural tissue in otherwise asymptomatic people. In this case-control study, we investigate the influence of a depressed scapular alignment on mechanosensitivity of the upper limb peripheral nervous system as well as pressure pain thresholds (PPT). Asymptomatic individuals with neutral vertical scapular alignment (n = 25) or depressed scapular alignment (n = 25) participated. We measured the upper limb neurodynamic test (ULNT1…
Reliability of upper-limb diaphyseal mineral and soft-tissue measurements using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT)
2018
Objectives: To quantify between-day reliability of upper-body diaphyseal measurements (radius, ulna, humerus) using peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT). - Methods: Fourteen males (age: 25.8±2.3 years,) underwent repeat pQCT scans (one to two days apart) at mid-shaft ulna (60%), mid-shaft radius (60%) and mid-shaft humerus (50%) cross-sections of the non-dominant limb. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CV) were determined for musculoskeletal morphology variables. - Results: Reliability was excellent (ICC: 0.76–0.99; CV: 1.3– 7.3) at all sites for bone mass, stress-strain index, endocortical and pericortical radius, endocortical volumetric…
Core muscle activation during dynamic upper limb exercises in women.
2012
Although several everyday functions and sporting activities demand controlled use of the abdominal and back muscles while working with the upper limbs, the activity of core muscles during dynamic upper limb exercises in the standing position has not been studied extensively. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine abdominal and back muscle activity during dynamic upper limb exercises while standing and to evaluate whether dynamic exercises are appropriate for strengthening muscles. The activation of the rectus abdominis, obliquus externus abdominis, longissimus, and multifidus muscles during dynamic bilateral or unilateral shoulder exercises with or without fixation of the …
How do somatosensory deficits in the arm and hand relate to upper limb impairment, activity, and participation problems after stroke? A systematic re…
2014
Background The association between somatosensory impairments and outcome after stroke remains unclear. Purpose The aim of this study was to systematically review the available literature on the relationship between somatosensory impairments in the upper limb and outcome after stroke. Data Sources The electronic databases PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception until July 2013. Study Selection Studies were included if adult patients with stroke (minimum n=10) were examined with reliable and valid measures of somatosensation in the upper limb to investigate the relationship with upper limb impairment, activity, and pa…
Paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale from central venous catheter thrombosis: A potential cause of stroke
2020
Paradoxical embolism refers to a potential condition in which an embolus arising from a venous source crosses into the systemic circulation through a right-to-left cardiac shunt causing an arterial embolism. A 39-year-old woman carrier of a central venous catheter (CVC) without evident risk factors for stroke, developed an acute right homonymous hemianopia during hemodialysis. On neuroimaging, an infarct in the territory of the left posterior cerebral artery was demonstrated. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a patent foramen ovale (PFO) and a large fluctuating thrombus in the right atrium on the tip of the CVC, thus allowing a diagnosis of ischemic stroke from paradoxical embolism.…
Effect of Isometric Upper-Extremity Exercises on the Activation of Core Stabilizing Muscles
2007
Abstract Tarnanen SP, Ylinen JJ, Siekkinen KM, Malkia EA, Kautiainen HJ, Hakkinen AH. Effect of isometric upper-extremity exercises on the activation of core stabilizing muscles. Objective To evaluate whether isometric exercises for the upper extremities could sufficiently activate core stabilizing muscles to increase muscle strength. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at a Finnish hospital. Participants Healthy adult women (N=20). Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures Peak isometric strength of the back and abdominal muscles was measured and relative loading in 5 test exercises was evaluated by surface electromyography. Re…
Upper-Body Exercises With External Resistance Are Well Tolerated and Enhance Muscle Activity in People With Hemophilia
2019
Abstract Background Conventional nonresisted therapeutic exercises for people with hemophilia involve a careful, low-intensity approach to avoid injuries. Externally resisted exercise is highly efficient for increasing muscle strength in healthy adults but its feasibility for people with hemophilia remains unknown. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate muscle activity during upper-body rehabilitation exercises with 2 types of external resistance and without external resistance (conventional) and to examine tolerability, kinesiophobia, and possible adverse effects derived from the session. Design This was a cross-sectional study. Methods Twelve people with hemophilia A/B (11 wi…
