Demographic change, new business formation and spatial concentration of population
2015
This paper investigates the role of urbanization in the relation between population change and new business formation. The hypothesis of research is that population change significantly influences new business formation only in regions at lower urbanization. This hypothesis is based on the idea that local demand and growing population are significant determinants of new business formation only for rural regions. Using Italian data, we find evidence in support of this hypothesis. Moreover, we find that evidence of spatial dependence in the relation between population change, new business formation and urbanization.
Cities, hinterlands and agglomeration shadows: spatial developments in Finland over 1880-2004
2011
This paper analyzes long-term spatial developments in Finland by focusing on two predictions of the new economic geography (NEG) models, the increasing persistence of locational patterns and the emerging agglomeration shadow, i.e. the rising dominance of growth centers. Pre- and post-war periods are distinguished to roughly express the shift from an agriculture-based economy to a post-industrial country. The analyses base on the assumption that each of the 19 Finnish regions has a center of its own and the rest of the region forms its local hinterland. The empirical analysis is based on regional population data from 1880 to 2004 at decade intervals. First, to analyze the persistence of loca…
Lead concentrations in feathers and blood of common blackbirds (Turdus merula) and in earthworms inhabiting unpolluted and moderately polluted urban …
2006
9 pages; International audience; Despite the dramatic decrease of atmospheric lead (Pb) concentrations in urban areas of most industrialised countries, we hypothesised that urban common blackbirds (Turdus merula) may still be contaminated by Pb concentrations of toxicological concern due to transfer from soil through the food chain. We sampled blackbirds and earthworms, one of their main preys, in Besan?, a middle-size city of Eastern France (where atmospheric Pb concentrations decreased from 0.5 microg/m(3) in 1987 to nearly 0 in 2002) and in a rural reference site. Lead concentrations were determined in the tissues of the different functional groups of earthworms (anecic, epigeous and end…
Landscape Urbanism and Architecture of the Voids
2017
This paper is focused on the relevance of the idea of “void” for the development of landscape urbanism. The theories of Secchi and Koolhaas are considered as far as a new acceptance of void is concerned. Furthermore the highly influential Chassé Terrain intervention in Breda b…
Municipal Solid Waste Management in the Accra Metropolitan Area, Ghana
2003
Municipal solid waste management in Accra, Ghana, is at present delivered in an unsustainable manner. Due to uncontrolled urbanisation, large quantities of waste are generated daily in Accra, and this exerts much pressure on an over strained solid waste management system. Coupled with weak institutional capacity, and lack of resources, both human and capital, the city authorities face difficulties in ensuring that all the waste generated in the city is collected for disposal. Home collection of waste is limited to high and, some middle income areas while the poor are left to contend with the problem on their own. This leads to indiscriminate disposal of waste in surface drains, canals and s…
The Intervention of Hydrogeophysics in the Economics of Groundwater Exploitation and Management in Sicily
1989
Abstract The problem of the preservation of water resources in Sicily presents various aspects, some of which have been treated by a number of works. Among the different applied methodologies, the geophysical ones occupy an important place. Their contribution, directed to an economic and efficient exploitation and management of groundwaters, can be useful for selected “risk” areas as well as for more regional programmes. In fact, uncontrolled drillings on relatively rich aquifers occur in several zones of this island; the economically disadvantageous exploitation causes also heavy impoverishment and pollution phenomena. The fragmentation of charges and the lack of a planning Regional Body m…
On Sustainable Management in Local Governance of Water: a Prospective Localized Study
2006
In the face of the changes in the planet's natural resources and of their unequal distribution, it is becoming more urgent that contemporary societies oversee environmental assets in a global manner. Although international directives, when they are transposed into national laws, may set specific objectives, meeting them at the local level is as yet an uneven enterprise. Nevertheless we hope to demonstrate, using a case-study involving local tensions over water resources, that public management of the crisis may be developed that effectively involves the civic society, by using the incentives and enforcement tools of central government and of local institutions.
A BMA Analysis to Assess the Urbanization and Climate Change Impact on Urban Watershed Runoff
2016
Abstract A reliable planning of urban drainage systems aimed at the mitigation of flooding, should take into account the possible change over time of impervious cover in the urban watershed and of the climate features. The present study proposes a methodology to analyze the changing in runoff response for a urban watershed accounting several plausible future states of new urbanization and climate. To this aim, several models simulating the evolution scenario of impervious watershed area and of climate change were adopted. However, it is known that an evolution scenario represents only one of all possible occurrence and it is not necessary the true future state, therefore it is needed to fin…
Un modèle radiocentrique pour l'analyse des espaces ruraux périurbains
1995
Research on periurbanisation’s factors, a phenomenon that has greatly contributed to the demographic growth of French rural areas for the last twenty-five years, leads us to ask about the determinants of residential location in rural areas of people working in a town. In order to answer this question, it is necessary to transpose residential location models usually used at the scale of the town - models which are the basis of the New Urban Economics school - to periurban areas. The area we are interested in is differentiated both from urban and rural areas seen from the agricultural production point of view. But we show that it can be analyzed in the same manner as urban areas. However, thi…
