Scelte terapeutiche e trattamento con sorafenib nell'epatocarcinoma: Analisi finale dello studio GIDEON in Italia
2015
Summary. Introduction. Sorafenib, an oral multikinase inhibitor, is the only targeted agent approved for the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after demonstration to increase overall survival compared to placebo in two randomized phase III study. GIDEON (Global Investigation of therapeutic DEcisions in HCC and Of its treatment with sorafeNib) is the largest, global, non-interventional, prospective study of patients with uHCC (n>3200) treated with sorafenib in real-life clinical practice conditions. Here we report the final analysis of safety and efficacy in the Italian cohort of patients. Methods. Patients with unresectable HCC who are candidates for systemic ther…
Standard versus personalized schedule of regorafenib in metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumors: a retrospective, multicenter, real-world study
2021
Background Despite its proven activity as third-line treatment in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), regorafenib can present a poor tolerability profile which often leads to treatment modifications and transient or permanent discontinuation; thus, in clinical practice physicians usually adopt various dosing and interval schedules to counteract regorafenib-related adverse events and avoid treatment interruption. The aim of this real-world study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of personalized schedules of regorafenib in patients with metastatic GIST, in comparison with the standard schedule (160 mg daily, 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off). Patients and methods Institutional registries a…
Adverse events as potential predictive factors of activity in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma treated with lenvatinib
2021
Background and Aim: Lenvatinib is a standard of care option in first-line therapy of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present study, we aim to identify, in patients with HCC treated with lenvatinib, a possible association between occurrence and grading of adverse events (AEs) and outcome. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 606 Japanese and Italian patients treated with lenvatinib in first-line setting and investigated the possible correlation between the onset of AEs, toxicity grade (G) and outcome measures such as overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Results: The appearance of arterial hypertension G ≥ 2 independently predicted prolonged …
Granting Epicurean Wisdom at Rome: Exchange and Reciprocity in Lucretius' Didactic (DRN 1.921-950)
2018
In the first book of De Rerum Natura, Lucretius describes his didactic undertaking as a metaphorical process of gift exchange (1.50-53): the obscure and salvific precepts of Epicurean philosophy, skilfully arranged in hexameters, are said to be 'gifts' (dona) that the poet has prepared with loyal zeal (studio fideli). Such a suggestive depiction of Lucretius' relationship to the work's dedicatee, Gaius Memmius, seems to reflect a relevant functional pattern of De Rerum Natura as a coherent system of communication strategies, variously readapting social models and cultural traditions. The present paper employs the interpretative approach of gift theories – the thought-provoking theories elab…
Filodemo, Cicerone, Nepote: a proposito del contesto storico-culturale di Oec. Col. XXII.9-48
2018
Until recently, Philodemus’ treatise On Household Management (Περὶ οἰκονομίας, PHerc. 1424) has been mainly used as a source for the reconstruction of early Epicurean economic thought (especially of Metrodorus’ writing Περὶ πλούτου). Over the past few years, however, scholars have called attention to Philodemus’ creative (yet philosophically orthodox) readaptation of Epicurean ethical and social theories to the needs of contemporary Roman society. Following this scholarly line, the present paper reassesses a passage from On Household Management (col. XXII.9–48) which has so far been interpreted as an unoriginal repetition of Metrodorus’ arguments, and situates it in the cultural context of …
PCR for the detection of pathogens in neonatal early onset sepsis.
2020
Background A large proportion of neonates are treated for presumed bacterial sepsis with broad spectrum antibiotics even though their blood cultures subsequently show no growth. This study aimed to investigate PCR-based methods to identify pathogens not detected by conventional culture. Methods Whole blood samples of 208 neonates with suspected early onset sepsis were tested using a panel of multiplexed bacterial PCRs targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS), Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Ureaplasma parvum, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis and Mycoplasma genitalium, a …
Wooden biochar as a carrier for endophytic isolates
2017
Abstract Plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPM) serve as a basis for bio-fertilizers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the wood-derived biochar as a potential carrier for PGPM, previously isolated from plants. The selected microbial consortium was compatible with aged biochar obtained from tree branches and processed at temperatures of 600–800 °C. The effect of the consortium or biochar alone and biochar carrier-based bio-formulation on plant growth was estimated in a 14-day greenhouse experiment with barley. The length of shoots and roots increased by 46% and 32% respectively in comparison with control. Synergy of consortium with biochar was observed regarding root length. Conso…
Politics of Parliamentary Government
2018
The chapter takes up the powers of the parliamentary government, its historical formation in Westminster and the parliamentary control of administration by rhetorical means. The parliamentary polity includes the various power struggles both in parliament and of parliament with government and administration of a polity. The vote of no confidence and a wider repertoire of tools for parliamentary control and oversight of both government and the bureaucracy around it will be discussed. This aspect illustrates the relevance of procedure and rhetoric as inherent to the parliamentary type of government. Reducing parliamentarism to the government vs. opposition divide tends to alter the rhetorical …
Development of polymer-based nanoparticles for Zileuton delivery to the lung : PMeOx and PMeOzi surface chemistry reduces interactions with mucins
2021
In this paper, two amphiphilic graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting polylactic acid (PLA) as hydrophobic chain and poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMeOx) or poly(2-methyl-2-oxazine) (PMeOzi) as hydrophilic chain, respectively, to a backbone of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA). These original graft copolymers were used to prepare nanoparticles delivering Zileuton in inhalation therapy. Among various tested methods, direct nanoprecipitation proved to be the best technique to prepare nanoparticles with the smallest dimensions, the narrowest dimensional distribution and a spherical shape. To overcome the size limitations for administration by inhalation, the nano-into-micr…
Rotaxanes and Catenanes Derived from Tetra-Urea Calix[4]arenes
2010
Calix[ 4] arenes, substituted by four urea groups at their wide rim, form dimeric capsules in apolar solvents, which are held together by a seam of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The heterodimerisation of tetra-aryl and tetratosyl ureas was used to synthesize various derivatives, in which adjacent urea residues are connected to form two, three or four loops. The aliphatic connections were tied by olefin metathesis between adjacent alkenyl residues followed by hydrogenation. Heterodimers of tetra-alkenyl substituted tetra-ureas and bis- or tetraloop derivatives were converted analogously to multiple catenanes. Tetra[2]rotaxanes were obtained in a similar manner. In addition to the spectrosco…
