Growth patterns and associated risk factors of congenital malformations in twins.

2020

AbstractBackgroundThe rate of twinning continues to increase due to the combined effect of a rise in parental age and increased use of assisted reproductive technology. The risk of congenital anomalies in twins is higher than in singletons, but it is less well reported in relation to growth patterns. We focused to the auxological outcome of twin pregnancies when one or both of twins are affected by one or more malformations.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective observational study reviewing the clinical charts of twins admitted in the period between January 2003 and December 2018 at the University Hospital of Palermo. The associations between malformations and anthropometric variables at birt…

Comparison of different statistical approaches to evaluate morphometric sperm subpopulations in men.

2016

This study was designed to characterize morphometric sperm subpopulations in normozoospermic men by using different statistical methods and examining their suitability to classify correctly different sperm nuclear morphologies present in human ejaculates. Ejaculates from 21 normozoospermic men were collected for the study. After semen collection and analysis, samples were prepared for morphometric determination. At least 200 spermatozoa per sample were assessed for sperm morphometry by computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis (CASA-Morph) using fluorescence. Clustering and discriminant procedures were performed to identify sperm subpopulations from the morphometric data obtained. Cluste…

Cardiovascular risk factors and the impact on prognosis in patients with chronic kidney disease secondary to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney dis…

2021

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent hereditary renal disease. There is an increased rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in ADPKD. In this study, we evaluate the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, the achievement rates for treatment goals and cardiovascular events (CVE) in ADPKD and their relations with asymptomatic CVD in CKD from other etiologies (CKDoe) and controls. Methods: We evaluated 2445 CKD patients (2010–2012). The information collected was: clinical, anthropometric and analytical parameters, treatments and CVD evaluation (intima-media thickness (IMT), atheromatous plaque presence and ankle-brachial index (ABI)). Laborator…

Kinetics of serum total and free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) after extended multisite prostate biopsy: Comparison among biopsy, transurethral res…

2008

Abstract Background The kinetics and reproducibility of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) following extended multisite biopsies are unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the kinetics of hematogenous leakage of PSA molecules by comparing the postintervention PSA manner among extended biopsies, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and biopsy plus TURP. Methods Total and free PSA values were examined before and sequentially after intervention (at 1 hour, 24 hours, 2 days, 14 days, and 28 days), in patients who underwent 14-core prostate biopsy (Biopsy, n = 53), TURP (TURP, n = 21), or prostate biopsy plus TURP (Biopsy+TURP, n = 18). Results Ten patients in the Biopsy grou…

Clinical and molecular spectrum of renal malformations in Kabuki syndrome.

2013

International audience; OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and types of renal malformations, and to evaluate renal function in a cohort of patients with Kabuki syndrome (KS). STUDY DESIGN: Renal ultrasound scans and plasma creatinine measurements were collected from a French cohort of 94 patients with genotyped KS. Renal function was evaluated based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate. A genotype-phenotype study was conducted for renal and urinary tract malformations. RESULTS: Renal malformations were present in 22% of cases, and urinary tract anomalies were present in 15%. Renal malformations were observed in 28% of the MLL2 mutation-positive group and in 0% of the MLL2 mutation…

Multiple Mucosal Biopsies and Postoperative Urinary Cytology in Patients with Bladder Cancer

1990

Seventy-one patients with bladder tumors of stage Ta, T1 or T2 were studied by bladder mucosal biopsies. In 34 (48%) patients abnormal histology was found in at least one of the biopsies. The occurrence and severity of mucosal abnormalities were related to tumor grade and stage. Urinary cytology after complete tumor resection was positive in 18 of 19 patients with abnormal biopsies and in 6 of 12 patients with normal biopsies. Postoperative urinary cytology seems to be a good indicator for the presence of urothelial atypia.

Characterization of human infiltrating and circulating gamma-delta T cells in prostate cancer

2019

Purpose The aim of our study was to prospectively evaluate the distribution of gamma-delta (γδ)1 and γδ2 T cells and their phenotypes in peripheral blood and prostate samples of patients diagnosed with or without prostate cancer (PCa) at prostate biopsy. Materials and methods A consecutive series of 43 outpatients underwent trans-rectal echo-guided prostate biopsy for suspected PCa. Flow cytometry analysis was used to identify and characterize the γδ T cells populations in peripheral blood and tissue samples. Patients were stratified according to the presence or not of PCa, and its International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade (1 vs. ≥2). Results The distribution of γδ T cells …

Bladder tumor staging: comparison of contrast-enhanced and gray-scale ultrasound

2009

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of contrast-enhanced sonography in comparison with conventional sonography in differentiating muscle- infiltrating and superficial neoplasms of the urinary bladder. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Conventional and contrast-enhanced sonography were performed on 34 consecutively registered patients with bladder tumors. All examinations were reviewed by two independent sonologists. At gray-scale sonography, interruption of the hyperechoic bladder wall was considered the main diagnostic criterion for differentiating superficial and infiltrating tumors. At contrast-enhanced sonography, a tumor was considered superficial when the hypoen…

EAU Guidelines on Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children

2012

Context: Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a common congenital urinary tract abnormality in children. There is considerable controversy regarding its management. Preservation of kidney function is the main goal of treatment, which necessitates identification of patients requiring early intervention. Objective: To present a management approach for VUR based on early risk assessment.Evidence acquisition: A literature search was performed and the data reviewed. From selected papers, data were extracted and analyzed with a focus on risk stratification. The authors recognize that there are limited high-level data on which to base unequivocal recommendations, necessitating a revisiting of thi…
