Polymorphisms of cyclo-oxygenases and 5-lipo-oxygenase-activating protein are associated with chronic spontaneous urticaria and urinary leukotriene E4

The mechanisms of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) continue to be unknown. Our working hypothesis is that polymorphisms of cyclo-oxygenases and 5-lipo-oxygenase-activating protein may be involved in the pathways leading to CSU. We examined five candidate polymorphisms of cyclo-oxygenases 1 and 2 and of 5-lipo-oxygenase-activating protein in 109 controls and in 94 CSU patients from Northern Italy. We also examined the levels of urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4) before and after challenge with ASA. Exposure assessment approach through mycotoxin/creatinine ratio evaluation in urine by GC–MS/MS

Abstract In this pilot survey human urine samples were analyzed for presence of 15 mycotoxins and some of their metabolites using a novel urinary multi-mycotoxin GC–MS/MS method following salting-out liquid–liquid extraction. Fifty-four urine samples from children and adults residents in Valencia were analyzed for presence of urinary mycotoxin and expressed in gram of creatinine. Three out of 15 mycotoxins were detected namely, HT-2 toxin, nivalenol and deoxynivalenol (DON). 37 samples showed quantifiable values of mycotoxins. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and glycosaminoglycans.

The influence of diabetic nephropathy on urinary glycosaminoglycan distribution was assessed in 96 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM, 49 female, age: 16 - 64 yrs, median 35; duration of IDDM: 0 - 43 yrs, median 13 yrs) in comparison to 103 healthy controls (57 female, 17 - 82 yrs, median 40 yrs). Glycosaminoglycan concentration of 24 h urine samples was determined by means of precipitation with cethylpyridinium chloride and potassium acetate in ethanol followed by a colorimetric test with carbazole. Prevalence of residual B-cell function related to age at onset and genetic profile in newly diagnosed type I diabetics.

Patients with type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus maintain B-cell function for a varying period of time after onset. This is commonly held to account for post-initial remission. To estimate residual B-cell function we measured plasma and 24-h urinary C-peptide in 68 type I diabetic patients (age range 4-35 years, within 10-180 days of the onset of symptoms, typed for HLA-A, -B, -C and DR loci. A positive correlation (r = 0.26; p less than 0.05) was found between urinary C-peptide levels and the age of the patient. Urinary cytology and nuclear matrix protein 22 in the detection of bladder cancer recurrence other than transitional cell carcinoma

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of nuclear matrix protein-22 (NMP22), compared with urinary cytology, in predicting the recurrence of bladder cancer that is not transitional cell carcinoma (non-TCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We tested the sensitivity, specificity and the predictive accuracy of NMP22 in the context of non-TCC bladder cancer recurrence, and compared it to the performance of urinary cytology. Long-Term Followup Of 158 Young Adults Surgically Treated For Vesicoureteral Reflux In Childhood: The Ongoing Risk Of Urinary Tract Infections

We recorded urinary tract infections in the long term after surgical reflux correction.A total of 158 of 189 patients (160 females and 29 males) who were followed in 1985, an average of 10.8 years after reflux surgery were contacted again in 1995. At that time median patient age was 26 years (range 15.7 to 38.8) and the average period of observation was 20.3 years (range 13.4 to 26).In 82% of the patients febrile and in 18% afebrile symptomatic urinary tract infections had developed preoperatively.
