Modulation of action tremor by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in multiple sclerosis patients
2014
Background: Patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can show a tremor of their upper limbs, mostly during the performing of finalised action (action tremor) or at the maintaining of a position against gravity (postural tremor), as key clinical feature of their disease. Objectives: In order to reduce the tremor, patients underwent to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the primary motor cortex of left hemisphere. Methods: Eight patients affected by a middle form of MS were enrolled into the study. A standard neurological examination was carried out and the individual degree of disability was established employing the Expanded Disability Status Score (EDSS). At EDSS pa…
Exome Sequencing Reveals VCP Mutations as a Cause of Familial ALS
2010
Summary Using exome sequencing, we identified a p.R191Q amino acid change in the valosin-containing protein ( VCP ) gene in an Italian family with autosomal dominantly inherited amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Mutations in VCP have previously been identified in families with Inclusion Body Myopathy, Paget disease, and Frontotemporal Dementia (IBMPFD). Screening of VCP in a cohort of 210 familial ALS cases and 78 autopsy-proven ALS cases identified four additional mutations including a p.R155H mutation in a pathologically proven case of ALS. VCP protein is essential for maturation of ubiquitin-containing autophagosomes, and mutant VCP toxicity is partially mediated through its effect on…
Five-year longitudinal study of juvenile migraine headaches
2004
To evaluate the prevalence and the evolution over 5-year of juvenile migraine headaches. Sixty-four subjects selected in our 1989 epidemiological survey were included in the study. The criteria of the International Headache Society were used both in 1989 and 1994. Thirty-two out of 64 subjects (50%) had MWAO, 18 (28.1%) had MD and 14 (21.9%) had headache not classifiable (HnC). MWOA persists in 56.2%, becomes MD and HnC in 9.4% and 3.1% of cases respectively, changes to episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) in 12.5%, and remits in 18.8%. MD persists in 11.1%, becomes MWOA and HnC in 27.8% and 5.5% of cases respectively, changes to ETTH in 11.1, and remits in 44.5%. HnC persists in 14.3%, be…
Cognitive dysfunction in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
2006
Cognitive dysfunction is considered one of the clinical markers of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, in the literature there are inconsistent reports on the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction, and separate data for the relapsing-remitting (RR) type of the disease are not always presented. In this study, we submitted 461 RRMS patients to a battery of neuropsychological tests to investigate their impairment in various cognitive domains. As a consequence of the exclusion criteria, the sample is not fully representative of the entire population of RRMS patients. In this selected sample, when only the eight scores of a core battery (Mental Deterioration Battery) were considered (with respectiv…
A 1-year maintenance after early adjuvant intravesical chemotherapy has a limited efficacy in preventing recurrence of intermediate risk non-muscle-i…
2010
Abstract OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of 1-year maintenance after a 6-week cycle of early intravesical chemotherapy, as the role of maintenance in intravesical chemotherapy is debated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between May 2002 and August 2003, 577 patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMI-BC) underwent transurethral resection (TUR) and early intravesical chemotherapy (epirubicin, 80 mg/50 mL). They were randomized between a 6-week induction cycle and the induction cycle plus maintenance with 10 monthly instillations. In all, 95 patients with T1G3, Tis or single and primary Ta-T1 G1-G2 tumours were excluded; 482 patients at intermediate risk of recurrence continued the study.…
Age at menopause predicts age at onset of Parkinson's disease.
2006
We investigated the association between age at onset of Parkinson's disease (PD) and fertile life characteristics in 145 women. Linear regression analyses showed a significant correlation between age at PD onset and age at menopause (P = 0.003), between age at PD onset and fertile life duration (P = 0.008), and a nonsignificant correlation between PD onset and cumulative duration of pregnancies (P = 0.23). These results support the possible role of estrogens in PD.
SHIP2: A “NEW” Insulin Pathway Target for Aging Research
2014
Strong evidence suggests that systemic inflammation and central adiposity contribute to and perpetuate metabolic syndrome. All of these alterations predispose individuals to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, as well as Alzheimer's disease (AD), all characterized by chronic inflammatory status. On the other hand, extensive abnormalities in insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-II signaling mechanisms in brains with AD have been demonstrated, suggesting that AD could be a third form of diabetes. The Src homology domain-containing inositol 5-phosphatase 2 (SHIP2) has an important role in the insulin pathway because its over-expression causes impairment…
Results from a prospective observational study of men with premature ejaculation treated with dapoxetine or alternative care: The PAUSE study
2014
Abstract Background Dapoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and the first drug approved for the on-demand treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). Its safety was established in a thorough clinical development program. Objective To characterize the safety profile of dapoxetine in PE treatment and to report the incidence, severity, and type of adverse events. Design, setting, and participants We conducted a 12-wk, open-label, observational study with a 4-wk, postobservational contact. A total of 10 028 patients were enrolled, with 6712 patients (67.6%) treated with dapoxetine 30–60mg (group A)and 3316 (32.4%) treated with alternative care/nondapoxetine (group B). …
