Alg: a Toolbox for the Generation of Look-Up tables Based on Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Models
2018
Atmospheric radiative transfer models (RTMs) are software tools describing the radiation processes occurring on the Earth’s atmosphere. While the evolution of these tools have achieved better representations of the light-atmosphere interactions, the increase of complexity, interpretability and computation time bears implications towards practical applications in Earth observation. Despite of existing RTM-specific graphical user interfaces, none of these tools allow common streamlining model setup for a wide variety of atmospheric RTMs. In addition, the automatic generation of atmospheric look-up tables (LUTs) can hardly be done with the use of these graphical tools. This paper presents the …
A software system to teach economics to secondary school and first year engineering students
2009
[EN] In this paper, we present a graphical user interface which has been devised to teach the basic concepts of economics in secondary schools and first year engineering courses. The application allows students to vary certain parameters and visually observe the effect on the supply and demand curves. The system has been developed in Matlab and employed in a secondary school in Spain. The first results are presented.
Design and Implementation of an Electronic Control Unit for a CFR Bi-Fuel Spark Ignition Engine
2017
In this work an Electronic Control Unit for the management of a CFR engine will be described. The engine, which is used both for fuel octane rating (both in terms of RON and MON) and for research purpose, is equipped with a double injection system, with the aim to independently operate both with liquid and gaseous fuels. The developed ECU, hence, is able to control the injections of both kind of fuel, together with the spark ignition. Furthermore the system is also able to measure fuel’s consumption, instantaneous engine speed of rotation and air-fuel ratio, showing all the running parameters both on a local LCD display and on a PC based graphical user interface.
Decision-making Tool for Moving from 3-axes to 5-axes CNC Machine-tool
2016
Abstract Nowadays most of the parts within machine-building industry are machines on CNC machine-tools. According to their mechanical and kinematic structure, CNC machine-tools can be divided into 3-axes and 5-axes ones. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks and choosing between them could be a very difficult process. This paper presents a decision support tool for aiding the process of selecting between using and/or buying either a 3-axes CNC milling machine or a 5-axes milling machine, based upon fuzzy logic. The tool was built using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox and the fuzzy graphical user interface (GUI) within Matlab software package.
A Graphical User Interface as a DSS Tool for GHG Emission Estimation from Water Resource Recovery Facilities
2017
A Grafical User Interface (GUI) for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from WWTPs based on four models aimed at quantifying the gas emissions from the aerated tanks (i.e. CAS and MBR reactor), aerobic digesters, secondary clarifiers and anaerobic digesters have been englobed in a GUI in order to provide a valid decision support system (DSS) to the practitioners. The GUI allows to estimate such emissions for the different WWTP phases considered. The GUI has been developed on MATLAB platform and provides as output the GHG emissions in terms of CO2 and N2O fluxes.
Towards a cyber-physical era: soft computing framework based multi-sensor array for water quality monitoring
2018
Abstract. New concepts and techniques are replacing traditional methods of water quality parameter measurement systems. This paper introduces a cyber-physical system (CPS) approach for water quality assessment in a distribution network. Cyber-physical systems with embedded sensors, processors and actuators can be designed to sense and interact with the water environment. The proposed CPS is comprised of sensing framework integrated with five different water quality parameter sensor nodes and soft computing framework for computational modelling. Soft computing framework utilizes the applications of Python for user interface and fuzzy sciences for decision making. Introduction of multiple sen…
Hardware-in-the-loop implementation for an active heave compensated drawworks
2012
Published version of an article published in the journal: Central European Journal of Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/s13531-011-0062-1 This paper presents the setup and running of a hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulation for an active heave compensated (AHC) draw-works. A simulation model of the draw-works is executed on a PC to simulate the AHC draw-works with a physical PLC. The PLC (ET200S) is configured with a controller architecture that regulates the motor angular displacement and velocity through actuation of the servo valves. Furthermore, a graphical user interface is developed for operation of the AHC system. The HIL test allowed tuning of t…
Table Top Augmented Reality System for Conceptual Design and Prototyping
2011
The AugmenTable is a desktop augmented reality workstation intended for conceptual design and prototyping. It combines a thin form factor display, inexpensive web cameras, and a PC into a unique system that enables natural interaction with virtual and physical parts. This initial implementation of the AugmenTable takes advantage of the popular open source augmented reality software platform ARToolkit to enable manual interaction with physical parts, as well as interaction with virtual parts via a physically marked pointer or a color-marked fingertip. This paper describes similar previous work, the methods used to create the AugmenTable, the novel interaction it affords users, and a number o…
A Low-cost, Real-time Monitoring System for PV Plants based on ATmega 328P-PU Microcontroller
2015
This paper presents a real-time monitoring system for PV power plants based on a microcontroller Atmega328P-PU. The proposed system, whose performances can be relatively close to those achieved with commercial monitoring systems, is simple, low-cost and open source technology-based. In addition, a user interface, capable to communicate through a wireless network by using a standard communication protocol IEEE 802.15.1, is here presented. From the experimental tests described and discussed in this paper it is demonstrated that the proposed monitoring system provides, with adequate accuracy, all the information about the operating status of the PV plant, even during fault conditions.
A New Web Interface for Distributed Control Systems: Application to the Chemical Monitoring of a Wort Fermentation Process
2006
A new web interface for rule net-based distributed control systems is proposed. It is applied to the monitoring of a chemical analysis system coupled with a wort fermentation process. A complete description of both the chemical and the informatics system is presented. This interface offers the possibility of accessing the process from any Internet-connected device (PC, PDA, etc.), using a standard browser as the only software required. The evolution of the results obtained in the FIA monitoring (and consequently of the process) can be analyzed by means of this interface; on the other hand, the process itself can be directly controlled through the modification of the different working parame…
