Simurgh
2021
The availability of non-volatile main memory (NVMM) has started a new era for storage systems and NVMM specific file systems can support extremely high data and metadata rates, which are required by many HPC and data-intensive applications. Scaling metadata performance within NVMM file systems is nevertheless often restricted by the Linux kernel storage stack, while simply moving metadata management to the user space can compromise security or flexibility. This paper introduces Simurgh, a hardware-assisted user space file system with decentralized metadata management that allows secure metadata updates from within user space. Simurgh guarantees consistency, durability, and ordering of updat…
An empirical study of recommendations in OLAP reporting tool
2015
This paper presents the results of the experimental study that was performed in laboratory settings in the context of the OLAP reporting tool developed and put to operation at the University. The study was targeted to explore which of the modes for generating recommendations in the OLAP reporting tool has a deeper impact on users (i.e. produces more accurate recommendations). Each of the modes of the recommendation component â report structure, user activity, and semantic â employs a separate content-based method that takes advantage of OLAP schema metadata and aggregate functions. Gained data are assessed (i) quantitatively by means of the precision/recall and other metrics from the lo…
The MoSGrid Science Gateway – A Complete Solution for Molecular Simulations
2014
The MoSGrid portal offers an approach to carry out high-quality molecular simulations on distributed compute infrastructures to scientists with all kinds of background and experience levels. A user-friendly Web interface guarantees the ease-of-use of modern chemical simulation applications well established in the field. The usage of well-defined workflows annotated with metadata largely improves the reproducibility of simulations in the sense of good lab practice. The MoSGrid science gateway supports applications in the domains quantum chemistry (QC), molecular dynamics (MD), and docking. This paper presents the open-source MoSGrid architecture as well as lessons learned from its design.

An Advanced Technique for User Identification Using Partial Fingerprint
2013
User identification is a very interesting and complex task. Invasive biometrics is based on traits uniqueness and immutability over time. In forensic field, fingerprints have always been considered an essential element for personal recognition. The traditional issue is focused on full fingerprint images matching. In this paper an advanced technique for personal recognition based on partial fingerprint is proposed. This system is based on fingerprint local analysis and micro-features, endpoints and bifurcations, extraction. The proposed approach starts from minutiae extraction from a partial fingerprint image and ends with the final matching score between fingerprint pairs. The computation o…
ATL model checking in the cloud
2015
This paper gives an overview of our recent work on implementing a new interactive ATL model checker for verification of open systems. In verification based on model checking, we need to provide a model of the system and also write down the properties (ATL formulas) that we require the system to satisfy. Traditionally, the semantics of ATL is given in terms of concurrent game structures. In contrast to previous approaches, our tool permits an interactive design of the ATL models as state-transition graphs, and is based on client/server architecture. The server part, published as Web service in OpenShift cloud platform, embeds the core of the ATL model checker, and the client provides an intu…
Extending and validating gestUI using technical action research
2017
gestUI is a model-driven method with tool support to define custom gestures and to include gesture-based interaction in existing user software system interfaces. So far, gestUI had been limited to the definition of the same gesture catalogue for all users of the software system. In this paper, we extend gestUI to permit individual users to define their own custom gesture catalogue and redefine some custom gestures in case of difficulty in using or remembering them. After extending gestUI, we applied technical action research from the FP7 CaaS project's Capability Design Tool with the aim of assessing its acceptance in an industrial setting. We also analysed its perceived ease-of-use and use…
PACS infrastructure supporting e-learning
2011
Digital imaging is becoming predominant in radiology. This has implications for teaching support, because conventional film-based concepts are now obsolete. The IHE Teaching File and Clinical Study Export (TCE) profile provides an excellent platform to enhance PACS infrastructure with educational functionality. This can be supplemented with dedicated e-learning tools.
Application of molecular topology to the prediction of the antimalarial activity of a group of uracil-based acyclic and deoxyuridine compounds.
2008
A topological-mathematical model has been arranged to search for new derivatives of deoxyuridine and related compounds acting as antimalarials against Plasmodium falciparum. By using linear discriminant and multilinear regression analysis a model with two functions was capable to predict adequately the IC(50) for each compound of the training and test series. After carrying out a virtual screening based upon such a model, new structures potentially active against P. falciparum are proposed.
Concerted motions of the integrin-binding loop and the C-terminal tail of the non-RGD disintegrin obtustatin.
2003
Obtustatin is a potent and selective inhibitor of the alpha1beta1 integrin in vitro and of angiogenesis in vivo. It possesses an integrin recognition loop that harbors, in a lateral position, the inhibitory 21KTS23 motif. We report an analysis of the dynamics of the backbone and side-chain atoms of obtustatin by homonuclear NMR methods. Angular mobility has been calculated for 90 assigned cross-peaks from 22 off-resonance rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy spectra recorded at three magnetic fields. Our results suggest that the integrin binding loop and the C-terminal tail display concerted motions, which can be interpreted by hinge effects. Among the integrin-binding moti…
