No synergy needed: ecological constraints favor the evolution of eusociality.

In eusocial species, some individuals sacrifice their own reproduction for the benefit of others. It has been argued that the evolution of sterile helpers in eusocial insects requires synergistic efficiency gains through cooperation that are uncommon in cooperatively breeding vertebrates and that this precludes a universal ecological explanation of social systems with alloparental care. In contrast, using a model that incorporates realistic ecological mechanisms of population regulation, we show here that constraints on independent breeding (through nest-site limitation and dispersal mortality) eliminate any need for synergistic efficiency gains: sterile helpers may evolve even if they are …

<b><i>Aims:</i></b> To develop a nomogram with severity categories for detrusor overactivity (DO). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> By conducting ice water tests (IWT) in 55 patients with Parkinson’s disease, we identified criteria to describe characteristics of the detrusor pressure curves: (1) a gradient of Δ<i>pdet</i> over Δt at the maximum detrusor pressure and (2) the area under the curve. Purpose: To investigate differences in athletes’ knowledge, beliefs, and training practices during COVID-19 lockdowns with reference to sport classification and sex. This work extends an initial descriptive evaluation focusing on athlete classification. Methods: Athletes (12,526; 66% male; 142 countries) completed an online survey (May–July 2020) assessing knowledge, beliefs, and practices toward training. Sports were classified as team sports (45%), endurance (20%), power/technical (10%), combat (9%), aquatic (6%), recreational (4%), racquet (3%), precision (2%), parasports (1%), and others (1%). I temi d'interesse sono la conservazione del carattere storico delle "masserie", talvolta allo stato di rudere, e la necessità di insediare nuove destinazioni d'uso e ricostruire la parti crollate in modo che risultino distinguibili. The contents are related to the intervention in rural architecture that is typical of the Sicilian countryside. Themes of interest are the conservation of the historic character of the "farms", sometimes in a state of ruin, and the need to establish new uses and rebuild the collapsed parts so that they are distinguishable.

Stability of the fergusonite phase in GdNbO 4 by high pressure XRD and Raman experiments

Abstract We describe the results of high pressure x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements on gadolinium orthoniobate. The ambient pressure monoclinic fergusonite phase remains stable in a remarkable large pressure range. There is no significative evolution of the monoclinic distortion up to 25 GPa , the maximum pressure achieved. Instead, the anisotropic compressibility is associated to the stiffness of NbO 4 tetrahedra in respect to the GdO 8 polyhedra. The high pressure evolution of external modes parallels the wavenumber dependence on ionic radius along the lanthanide series. The chemical pressure analogy is attributed to the compression of GdO 8 polyhedra. There is no evidence of any p…
