Sonographic monitoring of pelvic organs during pubertal maturation in girls treated for childhood acute leukemia

1992

Abstract Study Objective: To describe pubertal maturation of pelvic organs in long-term female survivors of acute childhood leukemia. Design: A case-control study comparing the uterine and ovarian biometry and the ovarian ultrasonographic patterns. Data were ordered according to age and Tanner staging. Setting: Department of Pediatrics, University of Palermo, Italy. Participants: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Palermo, Italy. Subjects: 11 long-term pubertal female survivors of acute childhood leukemia. 53 healthy pubertal schoolgirls as control group. Interventions: Assessment of pubertal development by Tanner staging and by recording age at…

Sonographic size of uterus and ovaries in pre- and postmenopausal women

1996

Uterine and ovarian size were measured in 765 pre- and postmenopausal women by transvaginal ultrasound. Of these, 263 (premenopausal, n = 155; postmenopausal, n = 108) were found to have neither uterine nor ovarian pathological findings. According to parity, premenopausal women were separated into three groups: nullipara, primipara and multipara. Postmenopausal women were separated into two groups according to years since menopause: 5 years since menopause. In the premenopausal group, a parity-related enlargement in uterine size was observed between nulliparous and parous women. After the menopause, a significant reduction in uterine size and in the corpus-cervix ratio was observed. The red…

Morbidly adherent placenta: evaluation of ultrasound diagnostic criteria and differentiation of placenta accreta from percreta

2013

Objectives To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) gray-scale and color Doppler and three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler sonographic criteria for morbidly adherent placenta (MAP), and to identify criteria to help distinguish placenta accreta from placenta percreta. Methods We enrolled 187 patients with placenta previa and history of uterine surgery and performed transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound examination for early detection of MAP. With 2D gray-scale transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasonography, we investigated loss/irregularity of the echolucent area between the uterus and the placenta (‘clear space’), thinning or interruption of the hyperechoic interface…

Localization of latency-associated transcripts in the uterovaginal plexus of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 latently infected mice.

1997

The vagina and medulla of the adrenal gland of mice vaginally infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 were examined in the latent stage of infection (5 to 51 weeks post-infection). RNA in situ hybridization with HSV-1 and -2 latency-associated transcript (LAT) RNA probes resulted in positively stained neuronal cell nuclei in the uterovaginal plexus, but not in the medulla of the adrenal gland. These organs were chosen because HSV antigens can be detected not only in the vaginal epithelium, but also in neurons of the uterovaginal plexus and in the medulla of the adrenal gland at the acute stage of genital infection. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing LATs in…

Silver-Russell syndrome associated to Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, diabetes and hirsutism

2001

We report an unusual association of two rare conditions, the Silver-Russell syndrome and the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, with extra endocrine anomalies. A 15-year old Silver-Russell syndrome girl was referred to our Unit because of primary amenorrhea and hirsutism of adrenal origin. A thorough assessment confirmed previous diagnoses and revealed the presence of diabetes, hyperinsulinism and a complete Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome with an ectopic localization of both ovaries. Although initial medical treatment was not unsatisfactory, future medical, psychological and social implications are expected.

First clinical uterus transplantation trial: a six-month report.

2014

Objective To report the 6-month results of the first clinical uterus transplantation (UTx) trial. This type of transplantation may become a treatment of absolute uterine-factor infertility (AUFI). Design Prospective observational study. Setting University hospital. Patient(s) Nine AUFI women and their live uterine donors, the majority being mothers. Intervention(s) Live-donor UTx and low-dose induction immunosuppression. Main Outcome Measure(s) Data from preoperative investigations, surgery and follow-up for 6 months. Result(s) Durations of donor and recipient surgery ranged from 10 to 13 hours and from 4 to 6 hours, respectively. No immediate perioperative complications occurred in any of …

Endometrial receptivity and implantation are not affected by the presence of uterine intramural leiomyomas: a clinical and functional genomics analys…

2008

Uterine leiomyomas are the most frequent benign tumors during reproductive age. Whether intramural leiomyomas cause infertility and should be removed is controversial because no study has addressed the underlying mechanism of infertility. The objective of the study was to test the effect of intramural leiomyomas on endometrial function by comparing gene during the window of implantation and implantation in an oocyte donation program, in which the quality of the embryos replaced is similar and the endocrine environment of the endometrium is standardized by exogenous steroids.Human endometria of women with single intramural leiomyomas (group A,5 cm and group B,or =5 cm) and controls (group C) …

Live Birth After Uterus Transplantation

2015

ABSTRACTIn the 3 decades since the birth of the first in vitro fertilization baby in 1978, there have been remarkable advances in infertility treatment. Until now, however, absolute uterine factor infertility remained the only major type of female infertility viewed as untreatable. Absolute uterine

Septate uterus: nosographic overview and endoscopic treatment

2014

To comment on the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of the septate uterus, with special reference to hysteroscopic metroplasty and its effect on reproductive outcome, we searched publications in PubMed and Embase. Original articles, meta-analysis, reviews, and opinion articles were selected. The studies suggest that the prevalence of the septate uterus is increased in women with repeated pregnancy loss and infertility. Reliable diagnosis depends on accurate assessment of the uterine fundal contour and uterine cavity by means of magnetic resonance and three-dimensional ultrasound. Pertinent published data comparing pregnancy outcome before and after hysteroscopic metroplasty indicated a m…

The effect of warm ischemia at uterus transplantation in a rat model

2012

Objective Uterus transplantation (UTx) has been proposed as a method to treat women with absolute uterine factor infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the viability of the transplanted rat uterus after exposure to long warm ischemic times, in order to mimic a time frame likely to occur in a human situation during complicated pelvic vascular anastomosis surgery. Design Experimental study. Setting Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Population Female Lewis rats. Methods. Pseudopregnant rats were randomly allocated into two intervention groups, a standardized syngeneic UTx procedure (control; n = 10) and a modified UTx protocol with a four hour extended period of warm ischemia (…
