Control of intrauterine device insertion with three-dimensional ultrasound: is it the future?

A comparative study was designed to determine whether three-dimensional transvaginal sonography (3D-TVS) offered advantages over two-dimensional transvaginal sonography (2D-TVS) for the identification and location of IUDs in 66 asymptomatic women. Hysteroscopy was performed in cases in which there was a discrepancy between the information obtained by both methods (n = 14). In eight cases (12.2%) the IUD was misidentified with 2D-TVS. In six cases (9.1%) it was not possible to identify the device model with 2D-TVS. In two cases (3.0%) 2D-TVS failed to identify the position of the device. In contrast, all IUDs were identified and located accurately with 3D-TVS. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Myofibroblasts Are Evidence of Chronic Tissue Microtrauma at the Endometrial-Myometrial Junctional Zone in Uteri With Adenomyosis.

Background Adenomyosis (AM) uteri exhibit hyperperistalsis. The latter causes a chronic tissue trauma at the endometrial-myometrial junctional zone (EMJZ). Upon tissue trauma, microdehiscences in the myometrium facilitate the translocation of basal endometrial fragments into the myometrium. There, a metaplasia (mediated by transforming growth factor β1 [TGFβ1] and connective tissue growth factor [CTGF]) occurs and AM lesions develop. P29 is an oestrogen receptor-associated protein which acts as a marker of oestrogen action in several systems. The concentration of P29 was measured in placenta and decidua from women following medical termination of pregnancy with the antiprogesterone steroid mifepristone (RU 38,486) and a prostaglandin E1 analogue, and compared with the concentration of P29 found in matched controls undergoing surgical aspiration of pregnancy. Oestrogen receptors were also measured in the same samples. STUDY QUESTION: Does the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) change endometrial gene expression when used for cycle programming? SUMMARY ANSWER: COCP used for scheduling purposes does not have a significant impact on endometrial gene expression related to endometrial receptivity. Laparoscopic temporary clipping of uterine artery during laparoscopic myomectomy

Purpose: Our aim is to study the feasibility and effect of bilateral laparoscopic temporary occlusion of uterine arteries by special vascular clamps on blood loss during laparoscopic myomectomy.
