Informed participation in the Valencian Community Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme from a gender perspective.

2018

Abstract Objective: To examine the factors that influence informed participation in a Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme (CRCSP) from a gender perspective. Methods: Cross-sectional telephone survey directed to men and women invited to participate (2009-2010) in the Valencian Community CRCSP (Spain). Sample size: 785 subjects. Outcome variables: participation in CRCSP and being informed. Bivariate and multivariate analysis using logistic regression models (95% confidence interval [95%CI], p <0.05). Results: Being a woman (odds ratio [OR]: 1.52; 95%CI: 1.06-2.19), receiving information from a general practitioner (OR: 1.64; 95%CI: 1.05-2.55) and being informed (OR: 1.54; 95%CI: 1.08-2.21) …

Analysis of the diagnostic pathway and delay in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the Valencian Community

2021

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an insidious, clinically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease associated with a diagnostic delay of approximately 12 months. No study conducted to date has analysed the diagnostic pathway in Spain. Methods: We gathered data on variables related to the diagnostic pathway and delay for patients diagnosed with ALS between October 2013 and July 2017. Results: The study included 143 patients with ALS (57% men; 68% spinal onset). Patients were diagnosed in public centres in 86% of cases and in private centres in 14%. The mean diagnostic delay was 13.1 months (median 11.7). Patients were examined by neurologists a mean time of 7.9 months afte…

Prevalence of mental disorders among children in Valencia, Spain.

1994

A 2-stage survey was carried out to establish the point-prevalence of mental disorders and help-seeking behaviour in children aged 8, 11 and 15 living in the city of Valencia. Global prevalence rates, rates by age and rates by sex, as well as rates of specific diagnosis according to DSM-III-R criteria are described. Help-seeking behaviour was found to be related to an interaction between internalizing and externalizing symptoms and sex.

Biomonitoring of mercury in hair of children living in the Valencian Region (Spain). Exposure and risk assessment.

2018

Abstract In this study, we assessed total mercury levels in hair specimens of 661 children, aged 6 to 11, participating in the BIOVAL programme, a human biomonitoring study carried out by the Health Department of the Regional Government of Valencia (Spain). The reference value (95th percentile) determined for this population, within this programme, was 3.25 μg g−1. Hg concentrations ranged between 0.03 μg g−1 and 8.71 μg g−1, with a geometric mean of 0.79 (CI 95%: 0.73–0.85) μg g−1. This mean value was five times higher than the average levels found in children of 17 other European countries (0.145 μg g−1). About 13% of children had hair mercury levels above the FAO/WHO JECFA guideline of 2…

Testing direct and indirect effects of sports participation on perceived health in Spanish adolescents between 15 and 18 years of age.

2003

This paper examines the direct and indirect effects of sports participation on perceived health. It is based on a representative sample of middle adolescents aged 15-18 (N=1038, M age=16.31, S.D.=0.92; 510 boys and 528 girls) from the Valencian Community (Spain). This study used two different models; Model A is an adaptation of Thorlindsson, Vilhjalmsson and Valgeirsson's (Social Science and Medicine 31 (1990) 551) model which introduces smoking, alcohol use, feelings of anxiety, feelings of depression and psychophysiological symptoms as mediator variables; Model B is an extension of Model A with perceived physical fitness as an added mediator variable. Both models show a good fit to the da…

Assessment of Dietary Iodine Intake in School Age Children: The Cross-Sectional ANIVA Study

2018

Iodine deficiency is one of the most important health problems in the world. It intervenes in the synthesis of thyroid hormones, which carry out important functions, so that a deficit of this mineral causes alterations of different kinds such as those related to growth. The objective of the present study was to know the prevalence of iodine deficit in the diet of Valencian children from 6 to 8 years old and their relationship with anthropometry. The analysis of the dietary intake was carried out through questionnaires. Thirteen schools participated in the study. The sample studied consists of 661 school children belonging to the Valencian Community, between 6 and 8 years of age: 298 boys an…

Effects of diabetes definition on global surveillance of diabetes prevalence and diagnosis: a pooled analysis of 96 population-based studies with 331…

2015

Diabetes has been defined on the basis of different biomarkers, including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test (2hOGTT), and HbA1c. We assessed the effect of different diagnostic definitions on both the population prevalence of diabetes and the classification of previously undiagnosed individuals as having diabetes versus not having diabetes in a pooled analysis of data from population-based health examination surveys in different regions.

Abdominal infections in the intensive care unit: characteristics, treatment and determinants of outcome

2014

Background: Abdominal infections are frequent causes of sepsis and septic shock in the intensive care unit (ICU) and are associated with adverse outcomes. We analyzed the characteristics, treatments and outcome of ICU patients with abdominal infections using data extracted from a one-day point prevalence study, the Extended Prevalence of Infection in the ICU (EPIC) II.Methods: EPIC II included 13,796 adult patients from 1,265 ICUs in 75 countries. Infection was defined using the International Sepsis Forum criteria. Microbiological analyses were performed locally. Participating ICUs provided patient follow-up until hospital discharge or for 60 days.Results: Of the 7,087 infected patients, 1,…

Orthodontic treatment need in Spanish schoolchildren: an epidemiological study using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need

2008

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in 12- to 16-year-old Spanish schoolchildren using the aesthetic component (AC) and Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and to analyse the relationship with gender and age. The study followed the World Health Organization recommendations for oral health surveys. The sample comprised 655 schoolchildren (306 males and 349 females) who had not undergone orthodontic treatment, divided into two groups: 363 12-year-olds and 292 15- to 16-yearolds, out of a representative sample of the school population of the Valencian Community. The IOTN results…
