Comparison of cluster validation indices with missing data

2018

Clustering is an unsupervised machine learning technique, which aims to divide a given set of data into subsets. The number of hidden groups in cluster analysis is not always obvious and, for this purpose, various cluster validation indices have been suggested. Recently some studies reviewing validation indices have been provided, but any experiments against missing data are not yet available. In this paper, performance of ten well-known indices on ten synthetic data sets with various ratios of missing values is measured using squared euclidean and city block distances based clustering. The original indices are modified for a city block distance in a novel way. Experiments illustrate the di…

Experimental validation of the prosthetic leg

2020

Abstract Studies of populations whose ability to perform voluntary movements is impaired due to natural reasons (e.g. aging), genetic anomaly (e.g. Down syndrome), trauma (e.g. spinal cord injury, amputation) or illness (e.g. Parkinson’s disease) frequently result in a basic question: are the observed motor patterns, which may be rather different from those seen in the general population, actually abnormal? In other words, should they be corrected? This question is important, not only for understanding the mechanisms of control over normal and disordered movements, but also for assessing the effectiveness of existing therapeutic approaches and providing focus for developing new therapies an…

The Emotion Regulation Cecklist Italian Translation Validation for parents and teacher versions.

2014

Our research explored the factor structure and the reliability of the Italian version of the Emotion Regulation Checklist [ERC; Shields, A.,& Cicchetti, D. (1997). Emotion regulation among school-age children: The development and validation of a new criterion Q-sort scale. Developmental Psychology, 33, 906-916], an instrument that has been widely adopted in studies using parents and/or teachers as informants. We carried out two studies evaluating the properties of the Italian ERC (ERC-I) when completed by parents and teachers, respectively. Study 1 participants were kindergarten and elementary school children for whom the ERC was completed by their mothers. Study 2 involved kindergarten and…

Screening for Low Energy Availability in Male Athletes: Attempted Validation of LEAM-Q

2022

A questionnaire-based screening tool for male athletes at risk of low energy availability (LEA) could facilitate both research and clinical practice. The present options rely on proxies for LEA such screening tools for disordered eating, exercise dependence, or those validated in female athlete populations. in which the female-specific sections are excluded. To overcome these limitations and support progress in understanding LEA in males, centres in Australia, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden collaborated to develop a screening tool (LEAM-Q) based on clinical investigations of elite and sub-elite male athletes from multiple countries and ethnicities, and a variety of endurance and weight-sensiti…

The Comparison of Software Reliability Assessment Models

2015

Abstract The reliability of the software represents one of the most important attributes of software quality, and the estimation of the reliability of the software is a problem hard to solve with accuracy. Nevertheless, in order to manage the quality of the software and of the standard practices in an organization, it is important to achieve an estimation of the reliability as accurate as possible. In the present work there are described the principles and techniques which underlie the estimation of the reliability of the software, starting from the definition of the concepts which express the attributes of software quality. It is taken into account the issue of the estimation of a software…

Revisiting the Solid Flux Theory

2022

Several variations of the basic activated sludge process and of the related design procedures for final clarifiers have been developed, which are frequently based on the well-known solid flux theory (SFT). In this paper, by using the Lambert W function and a “virtual” solid flux corresponding to the Vesilind parameters’ ratio, the SFT is reformulated, and dimensionless groups are detected, which highly reduce the number of parameters that are involved in the final clarifiers’ design procedure. The derived dimensionless relationships and the corresponding plots have general validity since they can be applied to all the possible design/verification parameter combinatio…
