Role of ambient light in the detection of contrast elements in digital dental radiography.
2018
Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different ambient light levels on observer detection of small contrast differences in a contrast phantom by using a high-end liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Study Design An aluminum step wedge was converted into a contrast phantom by the addition of bore holes. Radiographic images of the contrast elements were presented to 20 observers. Images were displayed in random order under different ambient light levels (0, 50, 200, and 500 lux) twice, and the observers had to determine if contrast elements were visible. Sensitivity and specificity were determined to calculate areas under receiver operating characteristic curves and Friedmann…
Fourier-transform infrared determination of nicotine in tobacco samples by transmittance measurements after leaching with CHCl3
1998
Abstract A new procedure is proposed for the FT-IR spectrometric determination of nicotine in tobacco. The method is based on the extraction of nicotine in CHCl 3 from tobacco samples, wetted with an aqueous solution of NH 3 (0.1 M), and the measurement of absorbance in the stopped-flow mode at 1316 cm −1 , using a spectral baseline correction established from 1334 to 1300 cm −1 . The procedure developed does not requires a complex sample preparation, and provides a limit of detection of 0.045 mg ml −1 nicotine, a sampling frequency of 3.3 h −1 and a coefficient of variation of 0.3% for five independent measurements of a tobacco sample with a nicotine content of 1.5% w/w. The accuracy of th…
Automatic in-tube SPME and fast liquid chromatography: A cost-effective method for the estimation of dibuthyl and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalates in envir…
2007
A 80-cm length commercially available capillary coated with 95% polydimethylsiloxane and 5% polydiphenylsiloxane (TBR-5) was employed to carry out on-line extraction and preconcentration of dibuthyl phthalate (DBP) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in the chromatographic system. The coated capillary was placed between the sample injection loop and the injection needle of an autosampler. Variables affecting the automatic in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) were optimized. A Genesis C(18) (5 cm x 4.6 mm i.d., 4 microm particle size) was employed as analytical column. The achieved limits of detection by use of diode array detection were 1 and 2.5 microg L(-1), respectively. The propo…
Direct vapor generation Fourier transform infrared spectrometric determination of ethanol in blood
1996
Abstract A new procedure is proposed for a direct determination of ethanol in plasma and whole blood. The method is based on the injection of a discrete sample volume of 10 μl into an electrically heated Pyrex glass reactor in which, at a temperature of 90 °C, the ethanol is volatilized and introduced by means of a N 2 carrier flow inside a long-path infrared gas cell and the corresponding flow analysis recording registered as a function of time. The measurement of the area of the flow injection recording, obtained from the absorbance of the transient signal in the range 1150−950 cm −1 , allows the direct quantification of ethanol upto 2 g l −1 , with a limit of detection of 0.020 g l −1 an…
A clean method for flow injection spectrophotometric determination of cyclamate in table sweeteners
2005
Abstract A flow system based on the multicommutation is proposed for fast and clean determination of cyclamate. The procedure exploits the reaction of cyclamate with nitrite in acidic medium and the spectrophotometric determination of the excess of nitrite by iodometry. The flow system was designed with a set of solenoid micro-pumps to minimize reagent consumption and waste generation. The detection limit was estimated as 30 μmol L −1 (99.7% confidence level) with linear response ranging up to 3.0 mmol L −1 . The coefficient of variation was estimated as 1.7% for a solution containing 2.0 mmol L −1 cyclamate ( n = 20). About 60 samples can be analyzed per hour, consuming only 3 mg KI and 1…
A multicommuted flow system with solenoid micro-pumps for paraquat determination in natural waters.
2007
A flow system designed with solenoid micro-pumps is proposed for the determination of paraquat in natural waters. The procedure involves the reaction of paraquat with dehydroascorbic acid followed by spectrophotometric measurements. The proposed procedure minimizes the main drawbacks related to the standard chromatographic procedure and to flow analysis and manual methods with spectrophotometric detection based on the reaction with sodium dithionite, i.e. high solvent consumption and waste generation and low sampling rate for chromatography and high instability of the reagent in the spectrophotometric procedures. A home-made 10-cm optical-path flow cell was employed for improving sensitivit…
Micropumping multicommutation turbidimetric analysis of waters
2007
Abstract A micropumping multicommutation manifold to perform turbidity determinations in waters is described. The procedure is based on the use of a combination of hydrazine sulfate and hexamethylenetetramine, to obtain an external standard of nephelometric turbidity units (NTU), which could compare the absorbance measurements at high wavelengths for samples with a calibration line obtained from a concentrated formazine standard diluted on-line. To minimize sample and reagent consumption and waste generation, the flow system was designed with two solenoid micro-pumps, one of them for the alternative introduction of the formazine standard and samples and the other one for the water carrier. …
Supercritical fluid extraction of resveratrol from grape skin of Vitis vinifera and determination by HPLC
2000
Supercritical fluid extraction of resveratrol from grape skin of Vitis vinifera was studied. Extraction variables such pressure, modifier concentration (ethanol), and extraction time were optimised. Final extraction conditions were: 40 degrees C, 150 bar, 7.5% ethanol and extraction time 15 min. Extraction recovery and precision (variation coefficient between 0.2 and 1.0%) were calculated. The resveratrol content in the ethanolic extract was determined by HPLC with UV detection at 306 nm. Acetic acid-methanol-water was used as the mobile phase, and C-18 and C-8 columns were tested, instrumental parameters were optimised, and analytical parameters were calculated (lineal interval 0-75 mg l(-…
Environmental and ontogenetic constraints on developmental stability in the spatangoid sea urchin Echinocardium (Echinoidea).
2006
13 pages; International audience; Spatangoid irregular sea urchins are detritivorous benthic organisms particularly prone to variations of environment, and their mode of growth and plate morphology make them an appropriate model to assess the effects of environmental variations. Two populations of Echinocardium flavescens were sampled in two sites of the Norwegian coast characterized by contrasted environmental conditions. Different morphological descriptors (plate areas, interlandmarks distances, overall size, and shape of the posterior ambulacra) were used to appraise interindividual variations, and fluctuating asymmetry. The comparisons were carried out using classical fluctuating asymme…
Formal Variation and Language Change in Catalan Quantifiers : the Role of Pragmatics
2020
This article studies the formal variation of the masculine singular forms of the quantifiers u/un 'one', algú/algun 'someone, some', ningú/ningun 'no-one, anyone, not one, any, none' and cada u/cada un 'everyone, each one' in contemporary Catalan. The standard uses of these forms are contrasted with dialectal uses, obtained from a thorough search in oral and written corpora. In addition, they are compared with the uses in the other Romance languages and with their historical evolution in Catalan. The whole set of data, and especially the dialectal information on the Valencian area, allow us to explain the various factors that have interacted in the variation and formal change of these quant…
