Isotropic p-harmonic systems in 2D Jacobian estimates and univalent solutions

2016

The core result of this paper is an inequality (rather tricky) for the Jacobian determinant of solutions of nonlinear elliptic systems in the plane. The model case is the isotropic (rotationally invariant) p-harmonic system ...

Genome-wide mapping of copy number variations in patients with both anorectal malformations and central nervous system abnormalities

2014

Background: Anorectal malformations (ARM) have a prevalence of around 1 in 2500 live births. In around 50% of patients, the malformation is isolated, while in the remainder it arises within the context of complex genetic abnormalities or a defined genetic syndrome. Recent studies have implicated rare copy number variations (CNVs) in both isolated and nonisolated ARM, and identified plausible candidate genes. Methods: In the present study, array-based molecular karyotyping was performed to identify causative CNVs in 32 sporadic ARM patients with comorbid abnormalities of the central nervous system (CNS). This phenotype was selected to enrich for rare CNVs, since previous research has implica…

Isolated bladder exstrophy associated with a de novo 0.9 Mb microduplication on chromosome 19p13.12

2012

BACKGROUND: The exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) is a urogenital birth defect of varying severity. The causes of the BEEC are likely to be heterogeneous, with individual environmental or genetic risk factors still being largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to identify de novo causative copy number variations (CNVs) that contribute to the BEEC. METHODS: Array-based molecular karyotyping was performed to screen 110 individuals with BEEC. Promising CNVs were tested for de novo occurrence by investigating parental DNAs. Genes located in regions of rearrangements were prioritized through expression analysis in mice to be sequenced in the complete cohort, to identify high-penetrance mutati…

Preference, Rationality and Interindividual Variation: The Persisting Debate About Female Choice

2015

Contemporary research on sexual selection remains deeply influenced by the controversy between Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace about the true nature and importance of female choice. After briefly reviewing the main points of disagreement between the two famous evolutionists, I discuss some methodological issues relevant to the contemporary study of female choice. I first use some recent controversy about sexual selection in the Indian Peafowl, Pavo cristatus, to illustrate several recurring problems and shortcomings in the empirical study of female preference for male characters. I then address the empirical evidence for rationality in female choice, and discuss how the recently em…

On the impact of within-die process variation in GALS-Based NoC Performance

2012

[EN] Current integration scales allow designing chip multiprocessors (CMP), where cores are interconnected by means of a network-on-chip (NoC). Unfortunately, the small feature size of current integration scales causes some unpredictability in manufactured devices because of process variation. In NoCs, variability may affect links and routers causing them not to match the parameters established at design time. In this paper, we first analyze the way that manufacturing deviations affect the components of a NoC by applying a new comprehensive and detailed within-die variability model to 200 instances of an 8¿8 mesh NoC synthesized using 45 nm technology. Later, we show that GALS-based NoCs pr…

Cost benefits of flexible hybrid cloud storage : Mitigating volume variation with shorter acquisition cycle

2016

The hybrid cloud storage is investigated as a case of concurrent sourcing. The paper introduces an analytical model for hybrid cloud storage costs. We study the role of acquisition cycle and volume variation in hybrid cloud costs.Shortening the reassessment interval reduces the volume non-stationarity.Shortening the reassessment interval reduces the total hybrid costs. Hybrid cloud storage combines cost-effective but inflexible private storage along with flexible but premium-priced public cloud storage. As a form of concurrent sourcing, it offers flexibility and cost benefits to organizations by allowing them to operate at a cost-optimal scale and scope under demand volume uncertainty. Howeve…

Variation Mode and Effect Analysis: a Practical Tool for Quality Improvement

2006

This paper describes a statistically based engineering method, variation mode and effect analysis (VMEA), that facilitates an understanding of variation and highlights the product/process areas in which improvement efforts should be targeted. An industrial application is also described to illustrate how the VMEA can be used for quality improvement purposes. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Multi-step ahead wind speed forecasting using an improved wavelet neural network combining variational mode decomposition and phase space reconstruct…

2017

Abstract Accurate wind speed forecasting is crucial to reliable and secure power generation system. However, the intermittent and unstable nature of wind speed makes it very difficult to be predicted accurately. This paper proposes a novel hybrid model based on variational mode decomposition (VMD), phase space reconstruction (PSR) and wavelet neural network optimized by genetic algorithm (GAWNN) for multi-step ahead wind speed forecasting. In the proposed model, VMD is firstly applied to disassemble the original wind speed series into a number of components in order to improve the overall prediction accuracy. Then, the multi-step ahead forecasting for each component is conducted using GAWNN…

Population dynamic of the extinct European aurochs: genetic evidence of a north-south differentiation pattern and no evidence of post-glacial expansi…

2010

International audience; Abstract Background The aurochs ( Bos primigenius ) was a large bovine that ranged over almost the entirety of the Eurasian continent and North Africa. It is the wild ancestor of the modern cattle ( Bos taurus ), and went extinct in 1627 probably as a consequence of human hunting and the progressive reduction of its habitat. To investigate in detail the genetic history of this species and to compare the population dynamics in different European areas, we analysed Bos primigenius remains from various sites across Italy. Results Fourteen samples provided ancient DNA fragments from the mitochondrial hypervariable region. Our data, jointly analysed with previously publis…
