Effect of polyphenols on enniatins-induced cytotoxic effects in mammalian cells
2012
Enniatins (ENs) are fungal secondary metabolites produced by genus Fusarium. The ENs exert antimicrobial and insecticidal effect, and has also been demonstrated cytotoxic effects on several mammalian cell lines. On the other hands, it has been proved that natural polyphenols have antioxidant effect. In this study, cell effects at low levels of exposure of four ENs (A, A(1), B and B(1)) and five polyphenols (quercetin, quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside, rutin, myricetin and t-pterostilbene) present in wine; and the cytoprotective effect of these polyphenols exposed simultaneously with ENs in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO-K1) cells, were studied. Cell effects were determined by the MTT test after 24 h o…
Floral ontogeny, petal diversity and nectary uniformity in Bruniaceae
2006
Bruniaceae are a small family subendemic to the Cape Floristic Region. Flowers are actinomorphic, choripetalous, pentamerous and tetracyclic. The petals show diverse adaxial swellings, which have been quoted as an example of diplophylly. Developmental studies confirm the true choripetaly of the flowers, thus pointing to an affinity to the Apiales within the euasterids II. They reject, however, the hypothesis of diplophylly as the petal swellings grow out rather late and are not vascularized. According to the position, size and shape of the swellings, six petal types are distinguished, which in part have phylogenetic information. Nectaries occur on the upper part of the ovary. Nectar is exuded …
The relationship between cortisol and cognitive function in healthy older people: The moderating role of Apolipoprotein E polymorphism.
2018
The Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE-epsilon 4) allele has been suggested as the main risk factor for late onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), whereas the ApoE-epsilon 2 allele has been proposed as a protective factor. These proposals have increased the interest in the effect of the ApoE genotype in healthy people. Additionally, high cortisol levels have been related to negative effects on cognition. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between cognitive performance and cortisol, taking into account the different ApoE alleles. For this reason, the aim of this study was to evaluate different cognitive domains (declarative and working memory, attention, and executive function) and their…
Effects of tributyltin(IV) chloride on fertilization of Styela plicata (Ascidiacea: Tunicata): II. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy stud…
2003
The morphological aspects of Styela plicata fertilization after treatment with tributyltin(IV) chloride are described by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations. Alterations have been shown both on female and male gametes; spermatozoa, all the egg envelopes and the mitochondria of the egg cortical cytoplasm are modified in relation to incubation time. As a consequence, the damage to gametes blocks sperm-egg interaction and fertilization does not occur. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Asynchronous L1 control of delayed switched positive systems with mode-dependent average dwell time
2014
Abstract This paper investigates the stability and asynchronous L 1 control problems for a class of switched positive linear systems (SPLSs) with time-varying delays by using the mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) approach. By allowing the co-positive type Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional to increase during the running time of active subsystems, a new stability criterion for the underlying system with MDADT is first derived. Then, the obtained results are extended to study the issue of asynchronous L 1 control, where “asynchronous” means that the switching of the controllers has a lag with respect to that of system modes. Sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee that the resulti…
Stabilization of positive switched systems with time-varying delays under asynchronous switching
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Control, Automation and Systems. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12555-013-0486-x This paper investigates the state feedback stabilization problem for a class of positive switched systems with time-varying delays under asynchronous switching in the frameworks of continuous-time and discrete-time dynamics. The so-called asynchronous switching means that the switches between the candidate controllers and system modes are asynchronous. By constructing an appropriate co-positive type Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and further allowing the functional to increase during the running time of ac…
Salivary gland choristoma in the buccinator muscle: A case report and literature review
2015
Salivary gland choristoma (SGCh) is defined as the presence of normal salivary tissue in an abnormal location. It is a rare entity in oral and maxillofacial region and its ethiology is unknown. The typical presentation of salivary gland heterotopia is an asymptomatic mass that may or may not produce saliva. Some examples of ectopic salivary tissue in the pituitary gland, in the lymph nodes, in the middle ear, in the neck, in the jaw, in the thyroid gland, in the mediastinum and in the rectum have been documented in literature. We report the case of a 61-year-old male presented with a bilateral tumorlike mass in the cheek. The mass was painless, of fibrous consistency and had size change wit…
Heterogenous forms of dyslipidemiain women with polycystic ovary syndrome
2008
Forms of dyslipidemia are very common in individuals affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but in addition to plasmatic lipids, it is necessary to evaluate the alterations in the atherogenic lipoproteins (Lp) and apolipoproteins (apo). In our study we measured the concentrations of apoB, Lp(a) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) in 42 patients with PCOS (age: 28 +/- 7 years, body mass index: 27 +/- 5 kg/m-) and 37 healthy women (of the same age and body mass index). Methods: values of Lp(a) >30 mg/dl were considered high, whereas for apoB, values >100 g/l were considered high. Results: the patients with PCOS showed an increase in triglycerides (p=0.0011) and low levels of high densit…
Effects of Atropine on Acetylcholine Overflow from Perfused Chicken Hearts
1978
Isolated chicken hearts were perfused (20 ml/min) with Tyrode’s solution. Release of acetylcholine (ACh) was evoked either by electrical stimulation (1 ms; 15 mA) of both preganglionic vagus nerves or by perfusion with dimethylphenylpiperazinium (DMPP). ACh was extracted from the perfusates by ion-pair extraction and determined by gas chromatography.
