Salivary gland application of botulinum toxin for the treatment of sialorrhea

2007

Sialorrhea or excessive salivation, and drooling, are common and disabling manifestations in different neurological disorders. A review is made of the literature, based on a PubMed search, selecting those articles describing clinical trials involving the injection of botulinum toxin A in the salivary glands of patients with different diseases characterized by sialorrhea. The most frequently treated diseases were infant cerebral palsy (30%), Parkinson’s disease (20%) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (15%). Over half of the authors injected the product into the parotid glands, 9.5% into the submaxillary glands, and 38% into both. The total doses of toxin injected varied from 10-100 units of …

OX40 expression in tumor-associated Tregs as a potential prognostic biomarker and immunotherapeutic target in ovarian cancer.

2015

e16576 Background: Treatment of ovarian cancer (OC) remains very challenging, with 80-85% of the cases still dying after relapse to standard chemotherapy, and novel treatments are urgently needed. Expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) is considered the major factor limiting immune responses to OC. Agonist antibodies against the co-stimulatory receptor OX40 have recently demonstrated to abrogate Treg functions and are under clinical evaluation. We thus studied whether OX40 constituted a valid target of OC-associated Tregs. Methods: Treg immunophenotypic analyses were performed by flow cytometry in ascites and OC specimens and studied in association with patients’ outcome Results: CD4+CD25+…

Carcinosarcoma of monoclonal origin arising in a dermoid cyst of ovary: a case report.

2005

Abstract Background Transformation of a cystic benign teratoma of the ovary into a "carcinosarcoma" has very rarely been reported and its histogenetic origin is still debated. Case presentation A case of carcinosarcoma arising from a dermoid cyst is reported. The tumor showed cystic areas delimited by normal squamous epithelium, with transitional areas through dysplastic epithelium to "in situ" and infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The sarcomatous component showed compact tissue composed of round cells concentrically arranged around small vessels, spindle, and pleomorphic cells with a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. Positive staining for vimentin, alpha smooth muscle actin and CD1…

Metallothionein expression in ovarian cancer in relation to histopathological parameters and molecular markers of prognosis

2001

Metallothioneins (MTs) and glutathione constitute the major fractions of intracellular thiol factors. Abundant nucleophilic sulfhydryl groups can interact with many electrophilic substances, including several anti-neoplastic agents, participate in controlling intracellular redox potential, and act as scavengers of reactive oxygen species. In the present study, we examined the relation of MTs (alone and in combination with glutathione) to histopathological parameters and survival time of ovarian cancer patients. Expression of the major MT isoforms (MT-1 and MT-2) was determined by immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded tumor specimens from 189 patients, 151 suffering from primary epitheli…

Overexpression of Ogg1 in mammalian cells: effects on induced and spontaneous oxidative DNA damage and mutagenesis

1999

Chinese hamster ovary cell lines (AA8 and AS52) were stably transfected to overexpress hOgg1 protein, the human DNA repair glycosylase for 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG). In the transfectants, the repair rate of 8-oxoG residues induced by either potassium bromate or the photosensitizer [R]-1-[(10-chloro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4H-benzo[a]quinolizin-1-yl)-carbo nyl ]-2-pyrrolidinemethanolplus light was up to 3-fold more rapid than in the parental cells. However, the improved repair had little effect on the mutagenicity of potassium bromate in the guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (gpt) locus of the OGG1-transfected AS52 cells. The steady-state (background) levels of DNA base modifications sensiti…

Abstract B157: OX40 expression in tumor-associated Tregs as a potential prognostic biomarker and immunotherapeutic target in ovarian cancer

2016

Abstract Background - Treatment of ovarian cancer remains very challenging, with 80-85% of the cases still dying after relapse to standard chemotherapy, and alternative treatments are urgently needed. Expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) is considered the major factor limiting spontaneous immune responses to ovarian cancer. Agonist antibodies against the co-stimulatory receptor OX40 have recently demonstrated to abrogate Treg functions and are under clinical evaluation. We thus studied whether OX40 constituted a valid target of ovarian cancer-associated Tregs. 3H-estradiol and3H-R5020 binding in cytosols of normal and neoplastic human ovarian tissue

1983

High-affinity cytoplasmic estrogen and progesterone receptors in normal and abnormal ovarian tissues were studied. Estradiol receptor was detectable in 65% and progesterone receptor in 36% of the malignant tumors; 39% of all malignant ovarian tissues were estradiol- as well as progesterone-receptor-positive. Tumors were said to be receptor-positive when the receptors bound greater than 5 fM steroid/mg cytosol protein. No correlations were found between receptor status and histopathological diagnosis. In normal ovarian tissues collected at various phases of the menstrual cycle no changes in [3H]-estradiol and [3H]-R5020 binding could be detected. Analysis of the receptor concentration for bo…

Capparis macrantha sp. nov. (Capparaceae, Brassicales), a new shrub species from a deciduous forest of the Nam Kading National Protected Area (centra…

2020

Capparis macrantha Souvannakhoummane, Fici & Lanorsavanh sp. nov., a new shrub species characterized by erect or ascending habit, stipular thorns, large lanceolate-elliptic leaves and large flowers in supra-axillary rows, is described and illustrated from the deciduous forest in Nam Kading National Protected Area (central Lao PDR). The new species belongs to Capparis sect. Monostichocalyx Radlk. and is morphologically similar to C. radula Gagnep., a shrub widespread in the Indochinese area, differing in the shorter, straight stipular thorns, larger leaves, larger sepals and petals, higher number of stamens with longer filaments and longer gynophore and ovary. Its affinities with related…

Comparison of basal cytotoxicity of seven carbamates in CHO-K1 cells

2006

The cytotoxic effects of seven carbamate pesticides, aldicarb, aldicarb sulfone, aldicarb sulfoxide, benfuracarb, pirimicarb, propoxur and thiobencarb, were compared in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cell line of Circetulus griseus. The endpoints evaluated were lysosomal function by neutral red assay and mitochondrial integrity by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT assay). The carbamates tested were evaluated in both serum-free medium and in serum-containing medium. Results demonstrate that CHO-K1 lysosomes appeared more susceptible to propoxur, aldicarb and its metabolites than mitochondria. Aldicarb was the most toxic carbamate pesticide tested on CHO-K1 cel…
