Ovarian cancer arises mostly from the ovarian surface epithelium. The aim of our study was to compare the effects of cytokines in ovarian surface epithelial (OSE) cells and in ovarian carcinoma cells. Proliferation and expression of surface antigens (CA-125 and classes I and II antigens of the major histocompatibility complex [MHC]) were measured in OSE cells obtained from 7 different patients and 7 ovarian carcinoma cell lines. Proliferation of OSE cells remained unaffected by interferon (IFN)-α or IFN-γ, whereas interleukin-I (IL-I) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) increased cell growth. We report a case of an immature malignant ovarian teratoma with peritoneal implants diagnosed in an 18-year-old woman. The tumor was brought into remission after surgery (three laparotomies) and adjuvant chemotherapy. A residual peritoneal implant showed a mature epithelial and glial configuration. Histologically, the neuroectodermal component was dominant in the original tumor as well as in the metastases, being confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Between 20 and 30% of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) demonstrate adrenal androgen (AA) excess, detectable primarily by elevated dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels. Generalized adrenocortical hyperresponsivity to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation is also observed and may be the principal mechanism determining AA excess in PCOS. The causes of this abnormality are unclear, but increased peripheral metabolism of cortisol, altered factors regulating glucose-mediated glucose disposal, and perhaps ovarian sex steroids may in different ways contribute to the AA excess in PCOS. This draft of the Official Round Table held during the 101(st) SIO National Congress is an updated review on sialoendoscopy, a technique used for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive pathologies of salivary glands in a minimally invasive fashion. This review treats many aspects of salivary gland endoscopy, starting from anatomy to deal with the more advanced surgical techniques and analyses the main decisional algorithms proposed in the literature.
