The purpose of this chapter is to describe the FADS symposia and the functioning of the network in between the actual gatherings, and to explain the meetings and their significance to everyone’s dissertation work. Three FADS students who participated in the symposia and engaged in the different assignments wrote this chapter together. The description and discussion is based on our own experiences, and on the observations and discoveries we have made about others during our face-to-face conversations, and from the online forum that functioned as a common space for further commentary and discussion between meetings. On the other hand, social media have enabled the proliferation of hateful debates in which, in the name of freedom of speech, previously tabooed content and language are becoming de-tabooed and accepted. As a response to fake news, direct and indirect hate speech, however, forms of organised counterspeech have emerged that counter the normalisation of aggressive and hateful speech. Poliprenoli (PP) ir izdalīti no augiem, tai skaitā, no skujkokiem. To ietekme uz centrālās nervu sistēmas (CNS) procesiem ir ļoti maz pētīta. Ir zināms, ka gan PP, gan holesterols un doliholi veidojas caur mevalonskābes atkarīgiem ceļiem (MVA) ar 3-hidroksi-3-metilglutaril-koenzīma A reduktāzes palīdzību. Šo enzīmu inhibē holesterola biosintēzes inhibītori statīni, kuru ilgstoša lietošana slimniekiem nelabvēlīgi ietekmē kognitīvās funkcijas (Schilling et al., 2014). Effect of simvastatin on desaturase activities in liver from lean and obese zucker rats

The effect of simvastatin, a hypocholesterolemic drug, on the biosynthesis of arachidonic acid was studied in obese and lean Zucker rats. After administration of 2 mg/kg body weight/d for 13 d, delta 6 and delta 5 desaturase activities were measured in liver microsomes at two substrate concentrations. In untreated rats, the delta 6 desaturation rate was similar in the obese and lean rats when measured at saturating substrate levels, whereas delta 5 desaturation was lower in the obese animals. Treatment with simvastatin did not change delta 6 desaturation in either phenotype but increased delta 5 desaturation in obese rats to reach the unchanged rate observed in lean animals.
