Music in the Dark: Soundscapes in Christiane Ritter’s A Woman in The Polar Night

2020

In A Woman in the Polar Night (Eine Frau erlebt die Polarnacht, 1938), Christiane Ritter, a well-to-do Austrian housewife, describes her experience as the first central European woman to overwinter on Svalbard (1934–35). Ritter’s prose is extraordinary in its lyrical simplicity, and in German editions the text is interspersed with her paintings of the scenes that at first were so alien and changing, yet became so familiar and loved.
Although stationed on the north coast of Svalbard with minimal human contact and without any recourse to the music with which Ritter had been surrounded in Austria, A Woman in the Polar Night is a text that is full of references to sound, natural sounds th…

Moments of Goodness: An Analysis of Ethical and Educational Dimensions of the Terror Attack on Utøya, Norway (July 22, 2011)

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Studies in Philosophy and Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11217-014-9452-1 The analysis is based on some moral experiences taking place during a terrorist attack on the Norwegian Labor Party’s youth camp on the island of Utøya (outside of Oslo) July 22, 2011, where 69 young people were killed and several seriously injured. After the attack many of the survivors told stories of how strangers spontaneous had helped and cared for each other. In the midst of the horror there occurred sudden “moments of goodness” or “points of light” that revealed hope for the persons involved, as well as for the society.…

Jeg a…

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Acta Didactica Norge.

2013

Author's version of an article in the journal: Teologisk Tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/tt/2013/03/joergen_moe_-_teolog_prest_og_biskop Jørgen Moe (1813–1882) is best known for his work as a folklorist, but he was also a poet, pastor and finally bishop in the diocese of Kristiansand. This article examines some of the cultural and theological motivations of his ministerial work, based on poems, sermons and documents from his years as a bishop. The article shows how Moe’s aesthetic and pedagogical interests are reflected in this period and how he influenced Norwegian church life through his pupils J. C. Heuch and Gustav Jensen. - Jørgen Moe (1813–1882…

Does reviewing experience reduce disagreement in proposals evaluation? Insights from Marie Skłodowska-Curie and COST Actions

2021

Abstract We have limited understanding of why reviewers tend to strongly disagree when scoring the same research proposal. Thus far, research that explored disagreement has focused on the characteristics of the proposal or the applicants, while ignoring the characteristics of the reviewers themselves. This article aims to address this gap by exploring which reviewer characteristics most affect disagreement among reviewers. We present hypotheses regarding the effect of a reviewer’s level of experience in evaluating research proposals for a specific granting scheme, that is, scheme reviewing experience. We test our hypotheses by studying two of the most important research funding programmes i…

Embodied Spirituality

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Archive for the Psychology of Religion. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/157361212X645340 The main findings on embodied spirituality within the Toronto Blessing are presented in this article. The aim of this study is to interpret ecstatic religious experiences from a psychological point of view. The theoretical framework is interdisciplinary, using theories from ego-psychology, social psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, and ritual theory. Regarding the latter notion, Thomas Csordas has developed cultural phenomenology, which is a culturally constructed way of understanding a situation through using bodi…
