Social Media Data in an Augmented Reality System for Situation Awareness Support in Emergency Control Rooms

2021

AbstractDuring crisis situations, emergency operators require fast information access to achieve situation awareness and make the best possible decisions. Augmented reality could be used to visualize the wealth of user-generated content available on social media and enable context-adaptive functions for emergency operators. Although emergency operators agree that social media analytics will be important for their future work, it poses a challenge to filter and visualize large amounts of social media data. We conducted a goal-directed task analysis to identify the situation awareness requirements of emergency operators. By collecting tweets during two storms in Germany we evaluated the usefu…

The Hierarchical Continuous Pursuit Learning Automation: A Novel Scheme for Environments With Large Numbers of Actions.

2019

Although the field of learning automata (LA) has made significant progress in the past four decades, the LA-based methods to tackle problems involving environments with a large number of actions is, in reality, relatively unresolved. The extension of the traditional LA to problems within this domain cannot be easily established when the number of actions is very large. This is because the dimensionality of the action probability vector is correspondingly large, and so, most components of the vector will soon have values that are smaller than the machine accuracy permits, implying that they will never be chosen . This paper presents a solution that extends the continuous pursuit paradigm to …

Public Procurement of Information Systems – A Dialectical Analysis

2015

The paper III and IV are excluded from the dissertation with respect to copyright. In this thesis I identify dialectics in public procurement of Information Systems (IS), and for some of the dialectics I identify synthesis. My study is based on a research gap, revealed through a literature review that I conducted. Public procurement in general and public procurement of IS in particular has been a neglected field of study. This is surprising, given the fact that public procurement account for a high proportion of the gross domestic product in the western world, and that procurement of IS especially is a highly complex task. My literature review identified a lack of research on the challenges…

Information Quality in Secondary Use of EHR Data : A Case Study of Quality Management in a Norwegian Hospital

2019

The motivation for undertaking this study relates to my experiences from practice in a public hospital, where I have observed variations in reaching organizational goals of quality management informed by electronic health records (EHR) data. For example, while some departments and units have long-time traditions in meeting the quality goals that are set locally, regionally, or nationally, other departments and units struggle to meet the same quality goals. Thus, generating actionable information by reusing routinely collected EHR data does not necessary lead to action in response to the information. This process of generating information from existing EHR data, and communicating and using s…

SMS-based Real-time Data Collection for Evaluation of Situational Awareness and Common Operational Picture : Lessons Learned from A Field Exercise

2020

Managing complex multi-agency emergency operations requires that the key actors have a holistic, correct and dynamic situational awareness (SA) and that the involved actors establish a common operational picture (COP). Establishing SA and COP are key objectives in many multi-agency exercises, however, reported research shows limitations in existing methods and approaches for collecting the data required for evaluating this. By being able to capture near real-time information during different phases of the exercise we will be better positioned to identify what works well and what does not work in the process of establishing SA and COP. Our paper presents an example of real-time data collecti…

Towards Designing AI-Enabled Adaptive Learning Systems

2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming an important component of the education sector, both in primary education and in higher education. The rapid advancement of computing technologies and big data processing techniques has made it possible to implement AI in education. AI and machine learning techniques are now being used to deliver chatbots like ChatGPT; intelligent tutoring systems; automatic grading systems; and other advanced learning systems like AI Adaptive Learning Systems, in the education sector. These advanced learning systems, AI enabled Adaptive Learning Systems (AI-ALS), is the focus of my doctoral dissertation. AI-ALS are the most advanced generation of adapti…

Supporting Humanitarian Relief Distribution Decision-Making under Deep Uncertainty : A System Design Approach

2020

With respect to copyright, all the papers were excluded from the dissertation. Disasters threaten society with widespread destruction of infrastructure and livelihood. For their survival, affected inhabitants depend on immediate humanitarian assistance from diverse organizations. During quick responses, humanitarian decision- makers (HDMs) act rapidly to distribute necessary relief goods, despite the deep, prevailing uncertainty that arises from scarce, conflicting, and uncertain information. To support HDMs in humanitarian relief distribution (HRD) decision-making, humanitarian logistics (HL) researchers have developed various mathematical models. These models are, however, specific to dis…

Enhancing the Benefits Management Model for Complex eHealth Efforts

2020

This thesis suggests five ways to improve BM in complex eHealth efforts. First, the concept of BR was defined to clarify the existing conflation of the BR and BM concepts. Second, an extended and enhanced BMM was developed that incorporated the BM context, levels of complexity for both organizational and interorganizational initiatives, and the critical aspects of learning and governance. Third, three propositions concerning learning and governance in BM were suggested based on the new model, which can be used to inform future BM studies and guide empirical work. Fourth, the propositions were further translated into a six-question checklist to stimulate learning from the BM process itself. …

The genesis of data-driven decision-making in the world of soccer tactics : deciphering the potential of big data

2021

Master's thesis in Information systems (IS501) Arguably, soccer is a more fluid sport than other popular sports such as baseball, American football, and cricket, which explicitly require more discrete ‘plays.’ Moreover, with twenty-two players always committed, it has more moving elements than basketball or ice hockey. From a mathematical perspective, this signifies that soccer has more degrees of freedom than these other sports, making it difficult to evaluate the game using one or a small number of metrics. Over time, this challenge has been made exceedingly more difficult within the soccer community. The availability of data has increased much more rapidly than the scientific advancement…
