Helping children in bullying situations: The role of intersubjective understanding and co-regulation

2020

Contemporary definitions of bullying are strikingly in agreement that bullying represents aggressive behaviour involving premeditation, time span, power imbalance and clear role assignment. Even though useful in some situations, these premises are not as helpful if the aim is to improve the social environment in educational contexts. The aim of the present article is to argue that educators need alternative theoretical tools when attempting to improve relations between children. We argue that interpretations of bullying in educational contexts are not ‘owned’ by any specific party, but rather involve (1) intersubjective negotiation and (2) the co-regulative competence of educators and child…

Computer Games and ESL Learning : A scientific literature review with hypothetical classroom sessions

2018

Master's thesis education EN502 - University of Agder 2018 The aim of this thesis is to explore scientific literature on the use of computer games as a tool for second language learning, and to use reviewed literature to create hypothetical classrooms sessions in which computer games are used as a tool. Therefore, the thesis question is “What does scientific literature say about the improvement of ESL skills among gamers? Moreover, might this information be helpful in the Norwegian English language classroom?” The work is structured as a three-part study, whereas the first is a literature review on studies related to computer games and language learning. Extensive Reading and Language Accuracy Development in the ESL Classroom : A case study of extensive reading and lower secondary learner language in …

2021

Master´s thesis in English (EN502) Reading is an activity with many positive effects, one of which is arguably language improvement. This thesis aims to reinforce this claim by exploring the effects of extensive reading on language skills amongst Norwegian lower secondary school students through a comparative analysis of written pre-and post-texts. A qualitative approach is used to analyze and identify language development following a two-month extensive reading program in an 8th-grade classroom. Additionally, a semi-structured interview with the teacher of the class is carried out. The study reveals that the participating students did not significantly improve their language accuracy throu…

Opportunities and Challenges when Students Work with Vocationally Connected Mathematics Tasks

2021

Students in vocational education in Norway take a compulsory mathematics course in the first year of their programme. This course offers opportunities for engaging with mathematics which can be highly relevant to practice in many workplaces. Working with vocationally connected mathematics tasks, tasks designed to draw on students’ future working contexts, is one way of trying to connect to students’ possible future vocations. This study aims to understand how students interact with such tasks with a particular emphasis on the roles of norms, authenticity and students’ positioning between the practices of school, the workplace and everyday life. In this study, I observed students working wit…

Materiell-kollektiv praksis. En tilnærming til fagdidaktikk for kunst og håndverk utviklet i veveprosjektet : Veve i åpne dører

2021

This study inquires into the potential of a material-collective practice as a pedagogical approach for a world-centred arts and crafts education. It challenges the Norwegian individually centred education policy with its predefined and measurable competencies. This monograph examines and discusses the possibilities when teacher attention shifts from the acquisition of skills and production of objects to the students' encounters with each other, materials and their surroundings. The study's emergent research method, material-collective ethnography, is proposed as a method for teaching practice. This empirical study consists of micro ethnographic fieldwork during an outdoor weaving project wi…

2013

Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk MA502 – Universitetet i Agder 2013 The teaching of mathematics in vocational education programs in Norway is required to make connections with each student's professional practice and daily life. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between mathematics and the program subjects in electrical vocational education. This is achieved through a description of the diverse teaching practices, leading to where the two subjects overlap. My main question is: What characterizes the relationship between mathematics 1T-Y and the program subjects in the electric vocational education? To address this question, I have formulated three research questions:…

Estetiske Læringsprosesser i design og spilling av brettspill

2018

Masteroppgave kunstfag KF500 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 In this thesis I have studied how aesthetical learning processes can occur in thedesign process and in play of a natural science themed board game. I have done this by designing my own board game with a biological theme, and tested it with others in two occations. I found that aesthetic learning processes had occurred in both the design process and whenplaying the game. This gave me the basis for further discussion of how learning processes and aesthetic learning processes can occur in the game medium in general. In the design process, aesthetic learning processes can occur through position exploration and aesthetic choices in the cre…
