Technique for prediction of outcome of election of national leaders.

1968

A technique is presented for evaluating the degree of support a candidate for national public office is likely to have at the polls. The technique involves the use of an adjective check list, Activity Vector Analysis (AVA), for which forms are available in French, Spanish, German, and Italian. Data are presented and discussed relative to a study made by the authors using this technique of public-image analysis just prior to the 1964 presidential elections in the United States. The data are based on the personality profiles of Johnson and Goldwater obtained from the public images held of these two candidates by 672 adults drawn from a population of voters representing a wide geographical di…

Monetary policy and exchange rate dynamics in the Spanish economy

1999

As the Spanish economy gets more integrated in international markets, the real exchange rate becomes a key determinant of the monetary transmission. In this paper we trace out the dynamic response of prices, output and the exchange rate following a monetary policy shock. We estimate a structural VAR model whose identification scheme is based on the long run properties common to a large class of models. The results suggest that a small model with efficient asset markets plus nominal inertia and long run monetary neutrality, captures the essential features of the monetary transmission mechanism in Spain. The interest rate shock is well identified and the exchange rate overshoots its long run …

Artificial Neural Network Based Abdominal Organ Segmentations: A Review

2015

There are many neural network based abdominal organ segmentation approaches from medical images. Computed tomography images were mostly used in these approaches. Applied techniques are usually based on prior information regarding position, shape, and size of organs in these methods. In the literature, there are only a few neural network based techniques that were implemented to segment abdominal organs from magnetic resonance based images. In this paper, we present these methods and their results.

EEG-based biometrics: effects of template ageing

2020

This chapter discusses the effects of template ageing in EEG-based biometrics. The chapter also serves as an introduction to general biometrics and its main tasks: Identification and verification. To do so, we investigate different characterisations of EEG signals and examine the difference of performance in subject identification between single session and cross-session identification experiments. In order to do this, EEG signals are characterised with common state-of-the-art features, i.e. Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), Autoregression Coefficients, and Power Spectral Density-derived features. The samples were later classified using various classifiers, including Support Vecto…

Image Processors for Digital Angiography Algorithms and Architectures

1986

After a period of experimental and clinical development,(1–9) digital processing of angiographic X-ray video image sequences is now routinely applied in clinical and research work. The clinical advantages offered by this approach have been discussed in several reports.(10–12) The primary application is the improved visualization of regions of the heart and circulation opacified by X-ray contrast material during angiographic and angiocardiographic examinations. More complex techniques are being developed for improved functional analysis based on digitized angiograms. Technically, the digital techniques also potentially offer improved means of acquiring, storing, and handling images when comp…

Tackling the Problem of Data Imbalancing for Melanoma Classification

2016

Comunicació de congrés presentada a: 3rd International Conference on Bioimaging, BIOIMAGING 2016 - Part of 9th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies, BIOSTEC 2016, Roma, Italy Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, yet melanoma is the most treatable kind of cancer when diagnosed at an early stage. In this regard, Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems based on machine learning have been developed to discern melanoma lesions from benign and dysplastic nevi in dermoscopic images. Similar to a large range of real world applications encountered in machine learning, melanoma classification faces the challenge of imbalanced data, where …

Microbial technologies for the discovery of novel bioactive metabolites

2002

Soil microbes represent an important source of biologically active compounds. These molecules present original and unexpected structure and are selective inhibitors of their molecular targets. At Biosearch Italia, discovery of new bioactive molecules is mostly carried out through the exploitation of a proprietary strain collection of over 50000 strains, mostly unusual genera of actinomycetes and uncommon filamentous fungi. A critical element in a drug discovery based on microbial extracts is the isolation of unexploited groups of microorganisms that are at the same time good producers of secondary metabolites. Molecular genetics can assist in these efforts. We will review the development an…

Global change and human vulnerability to vector-borne diseases

2013

This e-book presents a collection of research and review articles related to the spread, control and basic understanding of vector borne diseases all over the world. It is well known that a multidisciplinary point of view is necessary in order to develop a global vision of this emergent problem. Therefore, in order to promote this holistic approach to the knowledge of vector borne diseases, this e-book contains a total of 19 collaborations of entomologists, epidemiologists, virologists, parasitologists, bacteriologists, zoologists and veterinarians of Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. The title perfectly reflects some of the global factors that are behind the emergence and/or reemergence o…

Improved Regeneration of Autologous Nerve Transplants by Means of VEGF-Gene Therapy

2009

The impact of the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) on the angiogenic cascade is proven. Recently its neuroprotective effect after peripheral nerve injuries on α-motoneurons in the spinal cord was shown. Experiments on α-motoneurons demonstrated a decreased sensitivity to ischemia under VEGF-therapy. Aim of the study was to elucidate the effect of a localized VEGF-gene-therapy using an adenoviral vector construct in the model of a peripheral nerve defect in the rat treated with an autologous nerve transplant.
