Evolution of worldwide stock markets, correlation structure and correlation based graphs

2011

We investigate the daily correlation present among market indices of stock exchanges located all over the world in the time period Jan 1996 - Jul 2009. We discover that the correlation among market indices presents both a fast and a slow dynamics. The slow dynamics reflects the development and consolidation of globalization. The fast dynamics is associated with critical events that originate in a specific country or region of the world and rapidly affect the global system. We provide evidence that the short term timescale of correlation among market indices is less than 3 trading months (about 60 trading days). The average values of the non diagonal elements of the correlation matrix, corre…

Adenoviral RB2/p130 gene transfer inhibits smooth muscle cell proliferation and prevents restenosis after angioplasty.

1999

Abstract —Smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation that results in neointima formation is implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic plaques and accounts for the high rates of restenosis that occur after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, a widespread treatment for coronary artery disease. Endothelial lesions trigger intense proliferative signals to the SMCs of the subintima, stimulating their reentry into the cell cycle from a resting G 0 state, resulting in neointima formation and vascular occlusion. Cellular proliferation is negatively controlled by growth-regulatory or tumor-suppressor genes, or both, such as the retinoblastoma gene family members ( RB/p105, p107, RB2…

Attracteurs de Lorenz de variété instable de dimension arbitraire

1997

Abstract We construct the first examples of flows with robust multidimensional Lorenz-like attractors: the singularity contained in the attractor may have any number of expanding eigenvalues, and the attractor remains transitive in a whole neighbourhood of the initial flow. These attractors support a Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen SRB-measure and, contrary to the usual (low-dimensional) Lorenz models, they have infinite modulus of structural stability.

Ober Ein Rayleigh-Ritz-Verfahren zur Bestimmung Kritischer Werte

1980

This paper is concerned with the existence of critical points for a functional f defined on the level set of a second functional g. Existence of nontrivial solutions for the nonlinear eigenvalue-problem f′(u) = λg′(u) and convergence for a nonlinear analogue to the Rayleigh-Ritz-Method is proven. The results are applied to a nonlinear ordinary eigenvalue problem where it is shown that the lowest point in the continuous spectrum of the associated linearized operator is a bifurcation point of infinite multiplicity.

Eigenvalue Accumulation for Singular Sturm–Liouville Problems Nonlinear in the Spectral Parameter

1999

Abstract For certain singular Sturm–Liouville equations whose coefficients depend continuously on the spectral parameter λ in an interval Λ it is shown that accumulation/nonaccumulation of eigenvalues at an endpoint ν of Λ is essentially determined by oscillatory properties of the equation at the boundary λ = ν . As applications new results are obtained for the radial Dirac operator and the Klein–Gordon equation. Three other physical applications are also considered.

On the implementation of weno schemes for a class of polydisperse sedimentation models

2011

The sedimentation of a polydisperse suspension of small rigid spheres of the same density, but which belong to a finite number of species (size classes), can be described by a spatially one-dimensional system of first-order, nonlinear, strongly coupled conservation laws. The unknowns are the volume fractions (concentrations) of each species as functions of depth and time. Typical solutions, e.g. for batch settling in a column, include discontinuities (kinematic shocks) separating areas of different composition. The accurate numerical approximation of these solutions is a challenge since closed-form eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the flux Jacobian are usually not available, and the characte…

Solution of time-independent Schrödinger equation by the imaginary time propagation method

2007

Numerical solution of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large matrices originating from discretization of linear and non-linear Schrodinger equations using the imaginary time propagation (ITP) method is described. Convergence properties and accuracy of 2nd and 4th order operator-splitting methods for the ITP method are studied using numerical examples. The natural convergence of the method is further accelerated with a new dynamic time step adjustment method. The results show that the ITP method has better scaling with respect to matrix size as compared to the implicitly restarted Lanczos method. An efficient parallel implementation of the ITP method for shared memory computers is also demons…

A marching in space and time (MAST) solver of the shallow water equations. Part II: The 2D model

2007

Abstract A novel methodology for the solution of the 2D shallow water equations is proposed. The algorithm is based on a fractional step decomposition of the original system in (1) a convective prediction, (2) a convective correction, and (3) a diffusive correction step. The convective components are solved using a Marching in Space and Time (MAST) procedure, that solves a sequence of small ODEs systems, one for each computational cell, ordered according to the cell value of a scalar approximated potential. The scalar potential is sought after computing first the minimum of a functional via the solution of a large linear system and then refining locally the optimum search. Model results are…

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks collected from migratory birds in Latvia.

2014

Migratory birds act as hosts and long-distance vectors for several tick-borne infectious agents. Here, feeding Ixodes ticks were collected from migratory birds during the autumn migration period in Latvia and screened for the presence of epidemiologically important non-viral pathogens. A total of 93 DNA samples of ticks (37 larvae and 56 nymphs) removed from 41 birds (order Passeriformes, 9 species) was tested for Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp. Borrelia burgdorferi DNA was detected in 18% of the tick samples, and a majority of infected ticks were from thrush (Turdus spp.) birds. Among the infected ticks, Borrelia valaisiana was de…
