Settling of dilute and semidilute fiber suspensions at finite Re

2007

The motion of tracer fibers settling in a suspension made optically transparent using an index-of refraction matching technique is studied as a function of concentration, aspect ratio, fluid viscosity, and fiber length distribution. At Re ∼ O (1), two different regimes of sedimentation are clearly identified. For small volume fractions we find that fibers settle with their long-axis preferentially in the horizontal state. With increasing volume fraction, fibers settle preferentially with their long-axis aligned in the direction of gravity. These findings are strikingly different than for those conducted with Re → 0 and qualitatively support the numerical simulations reported by Kuusela et a…

Searches for transverse momentum dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at the LHC

2017

The measurement of azimuthal correlations of charged particles is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These correlations are measured for the second, third and fourth order flow vector in the pseudorapidity region $||<0.8$ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ using two observables, to search for evidence of $p_{\rm T}$-dependent flow vector fluctuations. For Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV, the measurements indicate that $p_{\rm T}$-dependent fluctuations are only present for the second order flow vector. Similar results hav…

The jets and disc of SS 433 at super-Eddington luminosities

2009

We examine the jets and the disc of SS 433 at super-Eddington luminosities with 600 times Eddington critical accretion rate by time-dependent two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical calculations, assuming alpha-model for the viscosity. One-dimensional supercritical accretion disc models with mass loss or advection are used as the initial configurations of the disc. As a result, from the initial advective disc models with alpha =0.001 and 0.1, we obtain the total luminosities 2.5x10^{40} and 2.0x10^{40} erg/s. The total mass-outflow rates are 4x10^{-5} and 10^{-4} solar-mass/yr and the rates of the relativistic axial outflows in a small half opening angle of 1 degree are about 10^{-6} solar…

Periodic massloss from viscous accretion flows around black holes

2014

We investigate the behaviour of low angular momentum viscous accretion flows around black holes using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Earlier, it has been observed that in a significant part of the energy and angular momentum parameter space, rotating transonic accretion flow undergoes shock transition before entering in to the black hole and a part of the post-shock matter is ejected as bipolar outflows, which are supposed to be the precursor of relativistic jets. In this work, we simulate accretion flows having injection parameters from the inviscid shock parameter space, and study the response of viscosity on them. With the increase of viscosity, shock becomes time dependent …

Weak and strong coupling equilibration in nonabelian gauge theories

2015

We present a direct comparison studying equilibration through kinetic theory at weak coupling and through holography at strong coupling in the same set-up. The set-up starts with a homogeneous thermal state, which then smoothly transitions through an out-of-equilibrium phase to an expanding system undergoing boost-invariant flow. This first apples-to-apples comparison of equilibration provides a benchmark for similar equilibration processes in heavy-ion collisions, where the equilibration mechanism is still under debate. We find that results at weak and strong coupling can be smoothly connected by simple, empirical power-laws for the viscosity, equilibration time and entropy production of t…

Damping by bulk and shear viscosity for confined acoustic phonons of a spherical virus in water

2007

International audience; A sphere-like virus in water is modeled as a homogeneous isotropic elastic continuum sphere in contact with an infinite viscous compressible Newtonian fluid. The frequencies and damping of the confined vibrational modes of the sphere are calculated for the material parameters of a virus in water. While the effects of viscosity are found to be negligible for a virus-like sphere of macroscopic size, for nanoscale viruses both the frequency and damping of the vibrational modes are significantly affected by the viscosity of the water. Furthermore, both shear viscosity and bulk viscosity play an important role.

Solution behavior of 4-arm poly(tert-butyl acrylate) star polymers

2010

Abstract This paper reports the synthesis of 4-arm poly( tert -butyl acrylate) stars of different molar masses up to 10 6  g/mol by the “core-first” method using ATRP. All obtained stars have a monomodal and narrow molar-mass distribution ( The dilute-solution properties of these star polymers were investigated in good solvents (tetrahydrofuran and acetone). Gel permeation chromatography and dynamic and static light scattering were used to measure the hydrodynamic properties including intrinsic viscosity [ η ], radius of gyration R g , hydrodynamic radius R h , second virial coefficient A 2 and diffusion coefficient D 0 . These data were used to establish relationships between these paramet…

Bench-scale investigation of inclined dense jets

2005

In this work experimental data on the geometry of dense inclined jets issuing in a lab-scale glass rectangular tank are presented. The surrounding fluid was always tap water at room temperature while the dense jets were water solutions of NaCl. Four parameters were changed in the experiments, namely nozzle diameter and inclination, and jet density and flow rate. Jet trajectories were revealed by a colored tracer. Images of the jet were recorded by a digital camera and then further digitally processed, eventually resulting in a time-averaged tracer intensity field. All the jet geometrical parameters, once normalized, were found to be very well correlated to the densimetric Froude number. Mod…

Interactions of tetradecyldimethylaminoxide with polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids in aqueous solution

2001

Abstract The interactions between the zwitterionic surfactant tetradecyldimethylaminoxide (C14DMAO) and the polyelectrolytes polyacrylic (PAA-205 and PAA-250) or polymethacrylic (PMA-100) acids have been investigated in aqueous solution. The physico-chemical properties of these systems have been monitored by measuring the solution pH, electric birefringence, zero-shear viscosity and density for increasing surfactant concentrations. The experimental results have shown that significant change in the physico-chemical properties of the polyacid/surfactant system occurs only in a narrow pH range and when the amphiphile forms rod-like micelles. Moreover, they clearly reveal the important role pla…
