Effect of TiO2 on the mullite formation and mechanical properties of alumina porcelain

2010

Abstract The effect of adding TiO 2 to standard alumina porcelain on its microstructure and flexural strength was investigated. A series of alumina porcelain bodies containing increasing amounts of TiO 2 were prepared by extruding mixtures of raw materials and TiO 2 . Porcelain rods were fired under industrial scheduling in a manufacturing kiln. The overall degree of crystalline and amorphous phase content within the porcelain bodies was quantitatively determined using a Rietveld analysis. Results indicated a higher amount of mullite formation in porcelain bodies containing TiO 2 . Examination of the product materials using field emission scanning electron microscopy showed a high density o…

DSC Studies and Stability of Frozen Foods

1991

This paper discusses the role played by the “WLF decrease in viscosity” above the temperature of the glass transition (Tg) in the temperature dependence of the stability of frozen foods. In the first part, the complex features observed before the melting endotherm on DSC/DTA thermograms of sugar-water solutions are examined; they are suggested to be representative of a glass transition associated with enthalpy relaxation. In the second part, the values of Tg for some complex foods are discussed. It is shown that ice melting adds an important contribution to the WLF effect on the decrease of the viscosity of the freeze-concentrated phase. The temperature dependence of the deterioration proce…

Three dimensional numerical simulation of wind driven flows in closed channels and basins

2008

In the paper, a fully 3D finite-volume numerical model is developed and employed for the prediction of wind-induced flows in a regular channel and in a square basin with a complex bathymetry. Numerical results are compared with laboratory experiments.Numerical tests are then performed to investigate whether simplifying assumptions about the pressure distribution and the turbulente stresses representation can be employed in the simulation of wind-driven flows. The hydrostatic pressure assumption, resulting in the use of “quasi-3D” models, proved to be reasonably acceptable in order to obtain the vertical profile of the streamwise velocity component away from the boundaries. The quasi-3D mode…

Physico-chemical properties of dense water/copper(II) bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate/CCl4 microemulsions

2007

Measurements of some physico-chemical properties (density, viscosity, conductance, infra-red spectra) of water/copper(II) bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (Cu(DEHSS)2)/CCl4 microemulsions, as a function of the volume fraction O of the dispersed phase (0 < O < 0.6) and of the molar ratio R (R = [water]/[DEHSS−]), have been performed at 25 °C. At each value of R, the density of the micellar phase is practically independent of O whereas the viscosity of microemulsions diverges above threshold O values. A divergent behavior for the electrical conductivity has also been observed but only at certain R values. These results, together with those from infra-red spectra, suggest that in percolated mi…

Viscosity of n-alcohol binary mixtures

1988

In this paper liquid mixture viscosities at 25 °C for 18 binary systems formed by primary n-alcohols have been measured. These values were fitted to Topological Treatment of Mixtures (T.T.M.) The pure compound topological description is obtained following the DARC system rules. A weighting function was introduced to obtain the topological description of a mixture. The results obtained with this model agree with experimental data (average deviation less than 2% in all cases).

The acid-catalyzed degradation of poly-3,4-acrolein was investigated by viscosity and spectroscopic determination of the monomer formed. The degradation occurs predominantly by chain scission; depolymerization is of minor importance. The results are unexpected in…

The impact of whey protein preheating on the properties of emulsion gel bead

2014

Thermal treatment effect (70 or 80 °C for 5 or 30 min) was evaluated on functional properties of whey protein isolate (WPI) dispersions used for the development of novel vitamin A delivery systems based on emulsion gel beads. This process combines an (O/W) emulsion diluted by a polysaccharide solution and a cold-set gelation induced by salt addition. Pre-heated WPI had a significant impact on the denaturation degree and on the surface hydrophobicity, respectively studied by differential scanning calorimetry and fluorescence. Stronger heating conditions (i.e. duration or temperature) induced complete denaturation, an increase of surface hydrophobicity and of viscosity. Under these conditions…
