Quantitative colorimetric analysis of some inorganic salts using digital photography

An analytical imaging approach to the quantitation of dissolved chemical species absorbed in the visible spectral region is reported. The approach uses digital images of a series of standard solutions of the target substance and their processing with appropriate software to assign a numeric value to each standard in terms of color intensity. Such a value is directly proportional to the analyte concentration and allows the construction of a calibration graph. The results thus obtained are compared with those provided by the classical spectrophotometricmethod used to run calibration curves for colored substances. Detecting Hand-Head Occlusions in Sign Language Video

A large body of current linguistic research on sign language is based on analyzing large corpora of video recordings. This requires either manual or automatic annotation of the videos. In this paper we introduce methods for automatically detecting and classifying hand-head occlusions in sign language videos. Linguistically, hand-head occlusions are an important and interesting subject of study as the head is a structural place of articulation in many signs. Our method combines easily calculable local video properties with more global hand tracking. The cryogenic anticoincidence detector for ATHENA-XMS: preliminary results from the new prototype

ATHENA has been the re-scoped IXO mission, and one of the foreseen focal plane instrument was the X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer (XMS) working in the energy range 0.3-10 keV, which was a kilo-pixel array based on TES (Transition Edge Sensor) detectors. The need of an anticoincidence (AC) detector is legitimated by the results performed with GEANT4 simulations about the impact of the non x-ray background onto XMS at L2 orbit (REQ. < 0.02 cts/cm2/s/keV). Proliferation of T lymphocytes (T cells) requires the interaction of interleukin 2 (IL 2) with the high affinity form of the IL 2 receptor (IL 2R). IL 2 production as well as IL 2R expression are generally induced simultaneously in T cells by the recognition of specific antigen displayed on the surface of syngeneic antigen-presenting cells. The experiments described herein show that the expression of IL 2R has different requirements than the production of IL 2 (and other lymphokines). Herpes virus saimiri (HVS) immortalizes T lymphocytes from a variety of primates and causes acute T cell lymphomas and leukemias in nonnatural primate hosts. Here we have analyzed the requirements for growth of three HVS-transformed human T cell lines. The cells expressed the phenotype of activated T cells: two were CD4+, and one was CD8+. All three cells responded to all allogeneic human cell lines tested with enhanced proliferation, production of interleukin 2 (IL-2), and increased expression of the IL-2 receptor. Biological agents might offer various therapeutic opportunities in the treatment of cancer, including a direct and/or host-mediated antiproliferative effect and also the possibility to favorably modulate tumor resistance to antineoplastic drugs. We studied the in vitro antiproliferative effects of interferon (IFN)-gamma on the mouse B16 melanoma and Friend erythroleukemia, and the human K562 erythroleukemia, as doxorubicin (DXR)-sensitive and -resistant (multidrug resistant) variants. The DNA methylation inhibitor 5-azacytidine modulates 6-thioguanine toxicity in mammalian cells

In order to assess the effects of combining two antimetabolites used separately to treat human leukemias, we carried out an experimental study by exposing V79 Chinese hamster cells, a 6-thioguanine (6-tG)-sensitive cell line, to sequential and concurrent treatments with 5-azacytidine (5-azaC) and 6-tG. In this paper, we demonstrate that there is a clear dependency for the way in which this combination was tested. Pre-treatment with 5-azaC made V79 cells more resistant to 6-tG by a substantial reduction in 6-tG incorporation into DNA; this effect could still be detected for several cell divisions after the removal of 5-azaC, and was achieved neither by reduced cell growth nor by the inductio…
Antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity of Peucedanum nebrodense (Guss.) Strohl.

Abstract Acetone extract of Peucedanum nebrodense (Guss.) Strohl., a rare endemic species from the Madonie mountains (Sicily), was tested in vitro for its antimicrobial activity against bacterial reference strains and antiproliferative activity against K562 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia), HL-60 (human leukemia) and L1210 (murine leukemia) cell lines. The acetone extract showed antiproliferative IC 50 values in the range of 14–0.27 μg/ml.
