Aims Early rehospitalization after an episode of acute heart failure (AHF) remains excessively high and its prediction a contemporary challenge. Iron deficiency (ID) is a frequent finding in AHF, but its prognostic implications remain unclear. We sought to evaluate the association between ID and risk of 30-day readmission in an unselected cohort of patients discharged for AHF. Methods and results Serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) were measured before discharge in 626 consecutive patients with AHF in a single teaching centre. Optimizing [13N]N2 radiochemistry for nitrogen-fixation in root nodules of legumes

Here we explored the conditions for synthesizing [ 13 N]N 2 in a state that is suitable for the administration to plant root nodules enabling studies of nitrogen fixation. [ 13 N]N 2 was prepared batchwise, starting with [ 13 N]NO ― 3 from the 16 O(p,α) 13 N nuclear reaction on a liquid water target. [ 13 N]NO ― 3 was first reduced to [ 13 N]NH 3 using Devarda's alloy, and then the [ 13 N]NH 3 was oxidized to [ 13 N]N 2 by hypobromite using carrier-added NH 4 CI. Investigation of the Electromagnetic Radiation Emitted by Sub-GeV Electrons in a Bent Crystal.

The radiation emitted by 855 MeV electrons via planar channeling and volume reflection in a $30.5\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$-thick bent Si crystal has been investigated at the MAMI (Mainzer Mikrotron) accelerator. The spectral intensity was much more intense than for an equivalent amorphous material, and peaked in the MeV range in the case of channeling radiation. Differently from a straight crystal, also for an incidence angle larger than the Lindhard angle, the spectral intensity remains nearly as high as for channeling. Dual role of epoxide hydratase in both activation and inactivation of benzo(a)pyrene.

The effect of epoxide hydratase upon the mutagenicity of benzo(a)pyrene was investigated using two Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA 1537 and TA 98). These two bacterial strains were found to differ characteristically in their susceptibility to different mutagens biologically produced from benzo(a)pyrene providing a diagnostic tool to investigate which types of mutagenic metabolites were produced in various metabolic situations. The results showed that the pattern of mutagenic metabolites produced by microsomes from methylcholanthrene-treated mice was very different from that produced by microsomes from phenobarbital-treated or untreated mice. Registration of arbitrary multi-view 3D acquisitions

International audience; To register 3D meshes representing smooth surfaces we track the 3D digitization system using photogrammetric techniques and calibrations. We present an example by digitizing a 800 mm x 600 mm portion of a car door. To increase the tracking accuracy the 3D scanner is placed in a cubic frame of side 0.5 m covered with 78 targets. The target frame moves in a volume that is approximately 1100 mm x 850 mm x 900 mm, to digitize the area of interest. Using four cameras this target frame is tracked with of an accuracy of 0.03 mm spatially and 0.180 mrad angularly. A registration accuracy between 0.1 mm and 2 mm is reached. Kinetics of particle growth and particle composition of a commercial Al-Li alloy by means of small-angle scattering

Abstract Extending previous work done on a similar alloy, small-angle X-ray scattering measurements are reported for a commercial Al-Cu-Li alloy (2–68% Cu and 1–88% Li by weight). Data have been analysed by means of an ellipsoidal model of precipitate particles using a method previously proposed by some of us which, incorporating interparticle interference effects, reproduces the fuli scattering intensities of the samples studied. Particie dimensions obtained from the fit indicate that the Lifshitz-Slyozov coarsening mechanism holds for ageing at higher temperatures and longer times.
