All-optical signal processing at ultra-low powers in bottle microresonators using the Kerr effect.

We present experimental results on nonlinear, ultra-low power photonics applications based on a silica whispering-gallery-mode microresonator. Our bottle microresonator combines an ultrahigh quality factor of Q10(8) with a small mode volume V. The resulting Q(2)/V-ratio is among the highest realized for optical microresonators and allows us to observe bistable behavior at very low powers. We report single-wavelength all-optical switching via the Kerr effect at a record-low threshold of 50 microW. Moreover, an advantageous mode geometry enables the coupling of two tapered fiber waveguides to a bottle mode in an add-drop configuration. This allows us to route a CW optical signal between both …

Modelling resonant coupling between microring resonators addressed by optical evanescent waves

In this paper we study the properties of microring resonator structures fabricated with high-index-of-refraction dielectric material. These structures concentrate light and can produce very strong optical potential gradients. They are of great interest for the trapping, manipulation and transport of cold atoms near surfaces. The study consists of two parts: in the first part we investigate the symmetry properties of the resonator response for simple models of the microring structures. Abstract A new approach for the simultaneous generation of electric energy and the treatment of waters contaminated by recalcitrant pollutants using salinity gradients was proposed. Reverse electrodialysis allows for the generation of electric energy from salinity gradients. Non-specific bronchial hyper-responsiveness in children with allergic rhinitis: relationship with the atopic status

An increased prevalence of bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) has been demonstrated in children from a general population, and in non-asthmatic adults with allergic rhinitis. Thus, also children with allergic rhinitis are expected to be at higher risk of BHR. We evaluated the prevalence of BHR in a sample of non-asthmatic children with allergic rhinitis by means of the methacholine (Mch) bronchial challenge, and by monitorizing the airway patency using the daily peak expiratory flow variability (PEFv). Analysis and approximation of one-dimensional scalar conservation laws with general point constraints on the flux

We introduce and analyze a class of models with nonlocal point constraints for traffic flow through bottlenecks, such as exits in the context of pedestrians traffic and reduction of lanes on a road under construction in vehicular traffic. Constraints are defined based on data collected from non-local in space and/or in time observations of the flow. We propose a theoretical analysis and discretization framework that permits to include different data acquisition strategies; a numerical comparison is provided. Oxygen Consumption Rate of Tumour Cells as a Function of their Proliferative Status

The oxygen consumption rate \(\left( \dot{Q}{{O}_{2}} \right)\) of EMT6/Ro-cells cultured as monolayers was investigated as a function of their proliferative status. The transition of these cells from the exponential to the plateau growth phase was associated with a continuous decrease in \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per single cell. This decrease can partially be attributed to a corresponding decline in cellular volume. In addition, the \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per cell volume was also reduced during the passage of the cells through the growth phase described. Preparation and Investigation of BaSO4KMnO4 Crystals

BaSO4 crystals containing KMnO4 prepared by precipitation were investigated morphologically, chemically and by X-ray diffraction. The colour of the preparations is homogeneous and stable. The colour intensity and also the amount of dissolved KMnO4 (maximum approx. 30 Mol%) increases with concentration of KMnO4 in the reaction solution to a limiting value dependent on the temperature. The lattice constants or the unit cell volume of the BaSO4–KMnO4 crystals increase with the proportion of KMnO4. The experimental values agree well with the Vegard rule for preparations up to 18 Mol% KMnO4, but with higher proportions significant departures were observed.
