Volumetric and transport properties of aerosol-OT reversed micelles containing light and heavy water

Densities and viscosities of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT in-heptane system containing light and heavy water, as a function of the molar ratio R (R=[H2O or D2O]/[AOT]) were measured at 0, 5, 25 and 40°C. At low R values, the apparent molar volume of deuterium oxide is smaller than that of light water. The difference is related to the strength of the hydrogen bonding H2O and D2O. The viscosities of both H2O-AOT-n-heptane and D2O-AOT-n-heptane systems were explained in terms of intermicellar interactions mainly governed by hydration of the head groups of AOT.

Post-disturbance salvage logging mitigates economic loss after windthrow, and the value of salvaged timber is strongly linked to its quality and dimensions. We studied the occurrence of wind-induced damage of aspen in the hemiboreal forests of Latvia based on data from the National Forest Inventory and additional measurements. Individual tree data from three re-measurement periods were linked to follow a tree condition (live, broken, uprooted) and to link tree characteristics to a respective snag. Refractive index of water-AOT-n-heptane microemulsions

Refractive index measurements on water/AOT/n-heptane microemulsions as a function of the volume fraction ϕ of the dispersed phase (water plus AOT) and of the water/AOT molar ratio R have been performed at 25°C. The refractive index was found to vary monotonically with ϕ without any change in rate during the crossover of the percolation threshold. Such a behavior suggested that, well above the percolation threshold, the water-AOT-n-heptane microemulsions are still formed by water-containing AOT reversed micelles dispersed in the oil phase. The analysis of the experimental data allowed an evaluation the fraction of the water molecules bonded to the AOT head group as a function of R.

Using recently proposed method of discrete Hirota dynamics for integrable (1+1)D quantum field theories on a finite space circle of length L, we derive and test numerically a finite system of nonlinear integral equations for the exact spectrum of energies of SU(N)xSU(N) principal chiral field model as functions of m L, where m is the mass scale. We propose a determinant solution of the underlying Y-system, or Hirota equation, in terms of determinants (Wronskians) of NxN matrices parameterized by N-1 functions of the spectral parameter, with the known analytical properties at finite L. We consider the electric and magnetic energy densities (or equivalently field fluctuations) in the space around a point-like field source in its ground state, after having subtracted the spatially uniform zero-point energy terms, and discuss the problem of their singular behavior at the source's position. We show that the assumption of a point-like source leads, for a simple Hamiltonian model of the interaction of the source with the electromagnetic radiation field, to a divergence of the renormalized electric and magnetic energy density at the position of the source. New therapeutics strategy against cystic fibrosis seeks to prevent the adhesion of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) on the epithelial cells in the lungs. One of the factors that induces the adhesion is the interaction between natural glycocluster present on the cells and lectins such as the PA lectin LecA (PA-IL) present on the bacterium. In this paper, emphasis has been put on the relationship between volume compression and cell inactivation for the Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain CBS 1171 submitted to high hydrostatic pressure treatments. The influence of cell dehydration on pressure inactivation was first investigated. Inactivation was found to be strongly limited, or even completely prevented for cells with a water content of 60% w/w or below. Angiosarcoma of the scalp is a rare aggressive tumor that affects elderly patients. Chemoradiation is the treatment of choice for multicentric and extensive disease. The shape of the scalp represents a dosimetric challenge in terms of achieving a homogeneous concave dose distribution with coverage of the entire target volume and an acceptable organs-at-risk sparing. We report a case of an 81-year-old man with a multifocal angiosarcoma of the scalp treated with Helical TomoTherapy® (Accuray Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA) intensity modulated radiotherapy. This technique allows precise and daily verifiable coverage of the target keeping the dose to the organs at risk within the constraints.
