Effect of electrolytical hydrogenation on the thermal stability and crystallization kinetics of METGLASS MBF-50

2007

The effect of electrolytical hydrogenation on both the surface and volume crystallization kinetics and thermal stability of amorphous alloy METGLASS MBF-50 has been investigated. The surface crystallization has been investigated by the exoelectron emission (EEE) technique, whereas the volume crystallization has been followed by differential thermal analysis (DTA). It has been found that both the surface and volume crystallization of investigated material occur in two stages. The surface crystallization occurs at temperature lower and with activation energy distinctly smaller than the volume crystallization. Hydrogenation of the investigated metallic glass enhances its thermal stability by i…

Damping by bulk and shear viscosity for confined acoustic phonons of a spherical virus in water

2007

International audience; A sphere-like virus in water is modeled as a homogeneous isotropic elastic continuum sphere in contact with an infinite viscous compressible Newtonian fluid. The frequencies and damping of the confined vibrational modes of the sphere are calculated for the material parameters of a virus in water. While the effects of viscosity are found to be negligible for a virus-like sphere of macroscopic size, for nanoscale viruses both the frequency and damping of the vibrational modes are significantly affected by the viscosity of the water. Furthermore, both shear viscosity and bulk viscosity play an important role.

Knots in finite memory walks

2016

We investigate the occurrence and size of knots in a continuum polymer model with finite memory via Monte Carlo simulations. Excluded volume interactions are local and extend only to a fixed number of successive beads along the chain, ensuring that at short length scales the excluded volume effect dominates, while at longer length scales the polymer behaves like a random walk. As such, this model may be useful for understanding the behavior of polymers in a melt or semi-dilute solution, where exactly the same crossover is believed to occur. In particular, finite memory walks allow us to investigate the role of local interactions in the transition from highly knotted ideal polymers to almost…

Infrared Microspectroscopy study of insulin crystals at high pressure

2012

During the last years the coupling of high pressure techniques and infrared spectroscopy has proven to be a very powerful tool in the study of conformational changes of proteins. Protein unfolding and monomerization are events that are expected to take place at high pressure due to the peculiarity of pressure to shift the system towards the state that occupies the minimum volume. We observed the growth of apparently cubic crystals at a pressure of about 4 kbar, subjecting to high pressure a solution of misfolded insulin. Even if high pressure is commonly used to tune the growth rate of crystals, protein crystallization at high pressure is not a well known process and no evidences of the par…

Comparative study of mandibular linear measurements obtained by cone beam computed tomography and digital calipers

2014

Objectives: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an innovative dental of imaging system characterized by rapid volumetric imaging with patient exposure to a single dose of radiation. The present study was carried out to compare the linear measurements obtained with CBCT and digital caliper in 20 mandibles from human cadavers. Study design: A total of 4800 linear measurements were measured between different mandibular anatomical points with CBCT and digital caliper. The real measurements were defined as those obtained with the digital caliper. Posteriorly, the mandibles were scanned to obtain the CBCT images, with software-based measurements of the distances. Results: The measurements obt…

The solubilisation behaviour of some dichloroalkanes in aqueous solutions of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers: a dynamic light scattering, fluorescenc…

2006

The aggregation behaviour of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers in water and in water + chlorinated additive mixtures was studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The copolymers were chosen such as to investigate the effects of molecular architecture (L35 and 10R5) and molecular weight by keeping constant the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance (F88 and F108). 1,2-Dichloroethane was used as a prototype of water basins contaminants. The hydrodynamic radius of the block copolymer aggregates (R(h,M)) and the intensity ratio of pyrene of the first and the third vibrational band (I(1)/I(3)) were determined as a function of…

Accumulation of low oxygen water in deep waters of ice-covered lakes cooled below 4 °C

2013

We studied vertical distribution of oxygen under the ice of 5 medium-sized, morphologically variable lakes that cooled well below 4 °C before freezing. In the upper part of the water column, dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations generally remained vertically almost uniform, but in the deepest water, concentrations changed rapidly near the bottom. The coincidence of the changes with an increase in deep water temperature shows that they were due to advection of water made heavier by the heat flux from the sediment. Consequently, water with low concentrations of dissolved oxygen and high concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon accumulated in the deepest part of th…

Calibrating storage tanks for soil erosion measurement from plots

1998

Many plots for soil loss measurements are equipped with a sequence of tanks for measuring runoff volume and sediment concentration. The stored water volume is easily determined by a water depth measurement while the sediment concentration is often measured by collecting samples of the mixed suspension. In this paper, using the Π-theorem of dimensional analysis, the functional relationship describing the mixing of the suspension in the tank is expressed in a dimensionless form. The recognized dimensionless groups allow the establishment, for given soil and water depth in the tank, of the relationship (calibration curve) between the actual and the measured concentration. The calibration curve…
