Travel literature does not constitute an objective source: neither the images nor the texts escape the cliches of the time in which they were written. In the age of the Grand Tour, western culture appropriated the history of Sicily and the South, andit did so by selecting and distorting data and information. From a personal point of view, the author underlines the legacies, born between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which still condition current historiography, perception of places and the collective imagination. The marketing of cultural tourism faces a dilemma between maximizing the economic return and nurturing the culture’s social functions. It needs to attract segments driven by cultural motifs, through a differentiation based on authenticity. Perceived authenticity changes over a time, but how it does remains elusive to researchers. This research investigated fluctuations of existential authenticity in cultural tourists in Bali. Participants were purposively and conveniently-sampled among visitors of cultural attractions. El objetivo de este artículo es investigar, desde una perspectiva comunicativa, socio-semiótica y etnomusicológica, la construcción de sentido sobre el viaje y el estilo de vida itinerante (hobo) en el discurso musical del blues. Primero realizaremos una contextualización histórica del viaje en la tradición afroamericana, y después analizaremos el caso del legendario músico texano Roosevelt «Grey Ghost» Williams (1903-1996) y de su composición «Lonesome Traveller» («viajero solitario»), en la que se representa el sujeto y estilo de vida hobo (trabajador migrante y sin hogar).
